The correlation between testosterone (T) and dominance rank may vary among species, and is expected to become stronger as the importance of aggressive competition for rank increases. However, it may also vary among social situations within a species, showing a stronger correlation during socially unstable periods. Knowledge on this topic in great apes, especially in females, is scant. This study presents the first data on the relationship between T and dominance rank in both sexes of the bonobo (Pan paniscus). For each period (four socially unstable and two stable ones), linear rank orders were determined and subsequently correlated with the accompanying mean urinary T-metabolite concentrations (measured as immunoreactive 5-androstan-17-ol-3-one). No correlation between these two variables was found for either sex among individuals during socially unstable or stable periods. Also, within an individual over the six periods, no relationship of T with rank could be demonstrated. These results suggest that either the outcomes of aggressions have no influence on T levels, or such clear outcomes appear insufficiently frequent to affect T levels over longer periods. Even during the unstable periods, the rate of aggressions was not higher than during stable periods, suggesting that frequencies of aggression have little effect on rank. Further analyses indeed demonstrated no correlation between frequencies of overall aggressions or any type of aggressive behavior separately, or rank. Perhaps factors other than the frequency of displayed aggressions alone have a marked influence on a bonobos rank, for example, coalition partners. Overall, in bonobos, T apparently does not form a physiological reflection of social status.  相似文献

Females of many catharrine primates show a periodic and often pronounced swelling of the perineum, the functional significance of which is unclear. Several hypotheses that exist to explain the function of this conspicuous trait are based on assumptions about the temporal relation between the period of maximum swelling and ovulation, and remain largely untested. We examined this relation in free-living chimpanzees of the Ta? National Park, Côte d'Ivoire, and assessed the reliability of perineal swelling as an indicator of ovulation in this species. We used noninvasive urinary progestogen analysis of female reproductive status, together with observational data on swelling characteristics, to determine the variability of timing of ovulation within the maximum swelling phase in 36 cycles from 12 females. The period of maximum swelling was highly variable, lasting from 6 to 18 days. Although ovulation was virtually restricted to the second half of the period of maximum tumescence, its timing varied considerably in relation to both the onset and the end of the maximum tumescence phase. Probability of ovulation, however, was not random, but peaked on day 7 after the onset of the maximum swelling phase, and was almost 60% between days 7 and 9. Thus, in wild chimpanzees perineal swelling indicates the probability of ovulation, but does not provide sufficient information to deduce its exact timing. Given the temporal variability of ovulation relative to the last day of maximum tumescence, field workers should try to include hormonal analysis if information on timing of ovulation is required for interpretation of observational data. To date, it is not known whether the seasonal occurrence of sexual behavior and mating in free-ranging Hanuman langurs at Ramnagar, Nepal, is correlated with seasonal changes in female ovarian function, and, if so, which factor(s) triggers the onset of the reproductive period. Using noninvasive fecal hormone analysis in combination with behavioral observations, this study was carried out to: 1) investigate and characterize seasonal patterns of ovarian cyclicity and timing of conception in wild langur females living in a highly seasonal habitat; and 2) examine the relationship between seasonal patterns of ovarian cyclicity, behavioral estrus, and female physical condition. Behavioral data and fecal samples were collected during a total period of 14 months from nine females living in a multi-male group. Physical condition of the females was assessed monthly by visual inspection, using a seven-fold scale. Ovulatory cycles and timing of conceptions were identified by the measurement of immunoreactive pregnanediol glucuronide (iPdG) in extracted feces. Hormone profiles in individual females revealed a clearly seasonal distribution in the occurrence of ovulatory cycles, which were restricted to the period from July to October. The distribution of female estrus behavior showed a similar seasonal pattern, and in total 88.2% of all estrus periods observed in the focal females were accompanied by ovulation. Onset of ovarian cycles as well as mating activities were strongly correlated with the onset of the rainy season. Females conceived, on average, in their second ovulatory cycle (pregnancy length: 211.6 +/- 3.4 days), with timing of conception being confined to the months when animals showed an improved physical condition. Collectively the present data clearly suggest that in seasonally-breeding langurs at Ramnagar, ecological conditions (rainfall, food availability, and quality) influence the onset of ovulations and timing of conceptions.  相似文献

Animal coloration has provided many classical examples of both natural and sexual selection. Methods to study color signals range from human assessment to models of receiver vision, with objective measurements commonly involving spectrometry or digital photography. However, signal assessment by a receiver is not objective but linked to receiver perception. Here, we use standardized digital photographs of female rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) face and hindquarter regions, combined with estimates of the timing of the female fertile phase, to assess how color varies with respect to this timing. We compare objective color measures (camera sensor responses) with models of rhesus vision (retinal receptor stimulation and visual discriminability). Due to differences in spectral separation between camera sensors and rhesus receptors, camera measures overestimated color variation and underestimated luminance variation compared with rhesus macaques. Consequently, objective digital camera measurements can produce statistically significant relationships that are probably undetectable to rhesus macaques, and hence biologically irrelevant, while missing variation in the measure that may be relevant. Discrimination modeling provided results that were most meaningful (as they were directly related to receiver perception) and were easiest to relate to underlying physiology. Further, this gave new insight into the function of such signals, revealing perceptually salient signal luminance changes outside of the fertile phase that could potentially enhance paternity confusion. Our study demonstrates how, even for species with similar visual systems to humans, models of vision may provide more accurate and meaningful information on the form and function of visual signals than objective color measures do.  相似文献

Parasites and infectious diseases represent ecological forces shaping animal social evolution. Although empirical studies supporting this link abound in various vertebrate orders, both the study of the dynamics and impact of parasite infections and infectious diseases in strepsirrhine primates have received little empirical attention. We conducted a longitudinal parasitological study on four groups of wild red‐fronted lemurs (Eulemur fulvus rufus) at Kirindy Forest, Madagascar, during two field seasons in consecutive years to investigate i) the degree of gastrointestinal parasite infection on population and individual levels and ii) factors potentially determining individual infection risk. Using a comprehensive dataset with multiple individually assignable parasite samples as well as information on age, sex, group size, social rank, and endocrine status (fecal androgen and glucocorticoid), we examined parasite infection patterns and host traits that may affect individual infection risk. In addition, we examined whether parasite infection affects mating and reproductive success. Our results indicated high variability in parasite infection on individual and population levels. Time of year and group size was important determinants of variability in parasite infection. Variation in hormone levels was also associated with parasite species richness and parasite infection intensity. Differences in parasite infection between years indicate a potential immune‐enhancing function of steroid hormones on nematode infections, which has not been reported before from other vertebrates studied under natural conditions. Male mating and reproductive success were not correlated to any measure of parasite infection, which suggests a nonfunctional role of the parasites we examined in primate sexual selection. Several authors have suggested that the consumption of plant compounds may have direct effects on wild primate reproductive biology, but no studies have presented physiological evidence of such effects. Here, for two troops of olive baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis) at Gashaka-Gumti National Park, Nigeria, we show major seasonal increases in levels of fecal progesterone metabolites in females, and provide evidence that this is linked to the consumption of natural plant compounds. Increases in fecal progestogen excretion occurred seasonally in all females, in all reproductive states, including lactation. Detailed feeding data on the study animals showed that only one food species is consumed by both troops at the time of observed progestogen peaks, and at no other times of the year: the African black plum, Vitex doniana. Laboratory tests demonstrated the presence of high concentrations of progestogen-like compounds in V. doniana. Together with published findings linking the consumption of a related Vitex species (Vitex agnus castus) to increased progestogen levels in humans, our data suggest that natural consumption of V. doniana was a likely cause of the observed increases in progestogens. Levels of progestogen excretion in the study baboons during periods of V. doniana consumption are higher than those found during pregnancy, and prevent the expression of the sexual swelling, which is associated with ovulatory activity. As consortship and copulatory activity in baboons occur almost exclusively in the presence of a sexual swelling, V. doniana appears to act on cycling females as both a physiological contraceptive (simulating pregnancy in a similar way to some forms of the human contraceptive pill) and a social contraceptive (preventing sexual swelling, thus reducing association and copulation with males). The negative effects of V. doniana on reproduction may be counter-balanced by the wide-range of medicinal properties attributed to plants in this genus. This is the first time that physiological evidence has been presented of direct effects of plant consumption on the reproductive biology of wild primates.  相似文献

In many anthropoid primates, mating activity is not restricted to the ovarian cycle but also occurs during pregnancy. Although it has been suggested that the main function of this post-conception mating is to confuse paternity, studies showing whether or not male primates can distinguish between the fertile phase of the conception cycle (FPCC) and the period of peak post-conception mating (peak PCM) are almost non-existent. Here, we examine whether the pattern of female sexual traits (specific sexual behaviors, sexual swelling) and female attractiveness to males differ between FPCC and peak PCM in 6 wild female long-tailed macaques. We also use fecal hormone analysis to investigate whether female traits during peak PCM are related to changes in female sex hormones. All females exhibited a distinct period of heightened mating activity around days 45-60 of gestation. During peak PCM, swelling size and frequency of female solicitations (but not reaching back) were significantly correlated with changes in the estrogen to progestogen ratio. Swelling size, frequency of female sexual behaviors and copulations and proportion of male-initiated copulations and ejaculations were not significantly different between FPCC and peak PCM. Although males spent significantly less time consorting females during peak PCM, all (particularly low-ranking and non-resident males) invested heavily in terms of reproductive costs associated with mate-guarding and mating during pregnancy. We conclude that post-conception mating in wild long-tailed macaques is not merely a by-product of endocrine changes and devoid of adaptive function. Our results more strongly support the hypothesis that it may form part of a female reproductive strategy to confuse paternity, which appears to apply particularly to low-ranking and extra-group males.  相似文献

The human voice provides a rich source of information about individual attributes such as body size, developmental stability and emotional state. Moreover, there is evidence that female voice characteristics change across the menstrual cycle. A previous study reported that women speak with higher fundamental frequency (F0) in the high-fertility compared to the low-fertility phase. To gain further insights into the mechanisms underlying this variation in perceived attractiveness and the relationship between vocal quality and the timing of ovulation, we combined hormone measurements and acoustic analyses, to characterize voice changes on a day-to-day basis throughout the menstrual cycle. Voice characteristics were measured from free speech as well as sustained vowels. In addition, we asked men to rate vocal attractiveness from selected samples. The free speech samples revealed marginally significant variation in F0 with an increase prior to and a distinct drop during ovulation. Overall variation throughout the cycle, however, precluded unequivocal identification of the period with the highest conception risk. The analysis of vowel samples revealed a significant increase in degree of unvoiceness and noise-to-harmonic ratio during menstruation, possibly related to an increase in tissue water content. Neither estrogen nor progestogen levels predicted the observed changes in acoustic characteristics. The perceptual experiments revealed a preference by males for voice samples recorded during the pre-ovulatory period compared to other periods in the cycle. While overall we confirm earlier findings in that women speak with a higher and more variable fundamental frequency just prior to ovulation, the present study highlights the importance of taking the full range of variation into account before drawing conclusions about the value of these cues for the detection of ovulation.  相似文献
