In field experiments using healthy trap plants it was found that pycniospores of S. nodorum were dispersed from diseased wheat plants whenever rain fell and occasionally in the absence of rain. Of two spring wheats tested, cv. Kolibri seemed a better ‘source’ plant and cv. Maris Butler a better ‘receptor’ when rainfall was light, but this difference was not apparent when rainfall was heavy. On 44 occasions, plants of Kolibri and M. Butler were also exposed to natural conditions immediately following artificial inoculation with S. nodorum. Infection of plants occurred on 10 occasions and was associated with the following minimum conditions: r.h, at inoculation >63%; and in the following 24 h, minimum temperature <6°C, at least 4 h with r.h. >90% and not more than 4 h with r.h. >60%.  相似文献

Bock (1963) showed that in the years 1956-60 early season sprays achieved good control of coffee berry disease (CBD) in East Rift areas of Kenya. In recent years, however, this spray programme has given erratic and often very poor results. In field experiments in 1966 yields of main (late) crop were increased from 151 to 652 kg/ha by early season sprays but in 1967 practically no control of the disease was achieved. Of the fungicides examined captafol was superior to copper; ‘Tuzet’, the best antisporulant, gave the poorest control. Analysis of the data indicates that this large seasonal variation depends on the very different inter-relationships between rainfall, cropping pattern and timing of sprays which obtained in the 2 years. The hypothesis that early-season sprays achieve control of CBD mainly by reducing the sporulating capacity of the maturing bark is questioned. The view is put forward that the protectant action of these sprays has been underestimated.  相似文献

Reptilian eggs previously categorized with respect to the flexibilityof eggshells appear to fall into two groups: endohydric eggsare those that are invested, by the female parent at the timeof oviposition, with all of the water necessary to completeembryogenesis; and ectohydric eggs which need to absorb waterfrom the nest medium tocomplete embryogenesis. Eggs of the Galapagosland iguana are unusual among most lepidosaurians by havingvery permeable parchment shells, but containing a large albumen(apparently serving as a reservoir of water for the embryo).It appears that the eggs of Galapagos land iguanas can exploitan endohydric habit without the rigid, impermeable shell seenin other endohydric eggs. This ability appears to be mediatedby two factors: eggs of Galapagos land iguanas are laid in drysoils which are essentially impermeable to water, and the verylarge eggs of land iguanas have a relatively small surface areatovolume ratio which results in a relatively small exchangeof water across the eggshell. It appears too that the waterrelations of Galapagos land iguana eggs will affect the energeticsof both the contained embryo and the subsequent hatchling. Withoutadequate water, land iguana eggs will produce hatchlings thatare both smaller and possess less fat to sustain thejuvenileduring the first year of life.  相似文献

The introduction and repression of CAM in Sedurn telephiunmL, a temperate succulent, was investigated in watered, progressivelydrouglited and rewatered plants in growth chambers. Measurementswere made of water vapour and CO2 exchange, titratable acidity(TA) and xylem sap tension. Effects of photoperiod were alsostudied. CAM was induced by drought under long or short days,although when watered no CAM activity was expressed. C3-CAM intermediate plants were used for the investigation ofwater supply. Those which had received water and those drought-stressedboth displayed a similar nocturnal increase in TA, with a day-nightmaximum (H+) of 69 µmol g–1 fr. wt. The wateredplants took up CO2 at a maximum rate of 2?2 µmol m–2s–1 only in the light period, while the droughted plantsshowed a maximum nocturnal CO2 uptake rate of 0?69 µmolm–2 s–1. Subsequently, as CAM was repressed, thewatered S. telephiwn displayed little variation in TA, withconstant levels at 42 µmol g–1 fr. wt. (day 10).After 10 d of drought stress, the CAM characteristics of S.telephiurn were aLso affected, with reduced net CO2 uptake andH+. The transition between C3 and CAM in S. telephium can be describedas a progression in terms of the proportion of respiratory CO2which is recycled and refixed at night as malic acid, in comparisonwith net CO2 uptake. Recycling increased from 20% (day 1) to44% (day 10) as a result of the drought stress and was highin both the CAM-C3 stage (no net CO2 uptake at night) and alsoin the drought-stressed CAM stage (reduced net CO2 uptake atnight). The complete C3-CAM transition occurred in less than8 d, and the stages could be characterized by xylem sap tensionmeasurements: CAM = 0?50 MPa C3-CAM = 0?36 MPa C3 = 0?29 MPa. Abstract The regulation of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) under controlled environmental conditions has been investigated for two tropical epiphytes, relating plant water and carbon balance to growth form and habitat preference under natural conditions. Aechmea fendleri is restricted to wet, upper montane regions of Trinidad, while A. nudicaulis has a wider distribution extending into more arid regions of the island. Morphological characteristics of these plants are related to habitat preference in terms of leaf succulence (0.44 and 0.94 kg m?2 for the two species respectively) and a distinct layer of water storage parenchyma in A. nudicaulis In contrast, the thinner leaves of A. fendleri contain little water-storage parenchyma and less chlorenchyma per unit area, but the plants have a more open leaf rosette. The two species differ in expression of CAM, since the proportion of respiratory CO2 recycled as part of CAM had been found to be much lower in A. fendleri This study compared the efficiency of water use and role of respiratory CO2 recycling under two PAR regimes (300 and 120 μnol m?2 s?1) and three night temperatures (12, 18 and 25 °C). Dark CO2 uptake rates for both species were comparable to plants in the field (maximum of 2.3 ± 0.2 μmol m?2s?1± SD, n= 3). Total net CO2 uptake at night increased on leaf area basis with temperature for both species under higher PAR, although under the low PAR regime CO2 uptake was maximal at 18 °C. Water-use efficiency (WUE) increased at 18 °C and 25 °C during dark CO2 uptake (Phase I) and also during late afternoon photosynthesis (Phase IV) in both species. For A. fendleri, dawn to dusk changes in titrable acidity (ΔH +) were similar under high and low PAR, although ΔH+ was correlated to night temperature and PAR in A. nudicaulis. The proportion of ΔH+ derived from respiratory CO2 also varied with experimental conditions. Thus percentage recycling was lower in A. fendleri under high PAR (0–10%), but was only reduced at 18 °C under low PAR. Recycling by A. nudicaulis ranged from 32–42% under high PAR, but was also reduced to 6% under low PAR at 18 °C; at 12 °C and 25 °C, recycling was 37% and 52% respectively. Previous studies have suggested a relationship between the proportion of recycling and degree of water stress. This study indicated that CAM as a CO2 concentrating mechanism regulates both water-use efficiency and plant carbon balance in these epiphytes, in response to PAR and night temperature. However, the precise relationship between respiratory processes and the balance between external and internal sources of CO2 is as yet unresolved.  相似文献

Eight samples of dried tomato soups were profiled by a trained panel, who also provided ratings of overall liking and liking for particular attributes on relative-to-ideal rating scales. A consumer panel tested a subset of four of the soups in home trials, assessing them for overall liking and for particular attributes on either hedonic or relative-to-ideal rating scales. The pattern of overall preferences differed between the trained and untrained panelists, demonstrating the inappropriateness of using trained panelists to provide measures of preference or acceptance. The conclusions regarding consumer preferences would differ depending on which rating scale was used; these differences disappeared when the relative-to-ideal ratings were converted into values of the same form as the hedonic ratings. The overall liking was best predicted by flavor rather than color or thickness. A principal components analysis (PCA) of the profile data compared well with a plot based on the trained panel preference data using MDPREF. The preference data were also fitted to the PCA dimensions using the PREMAP vector model, which gave a good fit for only six of the 15 trained panelists; the PREMAP ideal point model failed to show a better fit. In order to test these models adequately more than eight samples would need to be tested.  相似文献
