Dominant black-eyed white phenotypes are one of the most commonly observed traits in domestic animals. Their genetic control mechanisms, however, have not been elucidated. As the first step to approach the problem, we examined histologically the patterns of the distribution of pigment cells in Shiba goats (two each of day-73-postcoitum and day-112-postcoitum fetuses, and a 15-week-old kid) with the dominant black-eyed white phenotype. Melanocytes were present and fully pigmented in the choroid and the sclera of eyes, as well as in dorsal skin epidermis of the fetuses and of the kid. Melanocytes were also found in approximately 6% of the hair bulbs in the fetal dorsal skin, while the rest (94%) lacked them. Hair follicles of the kid did not harbor melanocytes except for some in the early anagen stage. The results suggest that the survival of melanocytes was inhibited specifically in the hair follicles of the Shiba goat with the dominant black-eyed white phenotype and that the ostensibly similar phenotypes in the Shiba goat and in the SI or W mutants of the mouse, where melanocytes die en route to the hair bulbs, are regulated by different mechanisms.  相似文献

We isolated and characterized 14 polymorphic microsatellite loci for the field gudgeon, Gnathopogon elongatus elongatus, a popular freshwater species in streams including agricultural canals in Japan. The number of observed alleles for each locus ranged from 9 to 24, and the values of observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.750 to 1.000 and from 0.832 to 0.953, respectively. These microsatellite markers will be useful for studies of population genetic structure and genetic variability of the field gudgeon.  相似文献

1. Twenty usual amino acids examined were shown to be dividedinto two groups with respect to their actions on the flowerformation (A) and frond multiplication (B) in a long-day duckweed,L. gibba G3. Amino acids of the first group (e.g., arginine)inhibited A without preventing B, and those of the second group(e.g., lysine) inhibited both A and B. The inhibition of flowerformation was always the greatest when amino acid was appliedat the induction period. 2. The floral inhibition by arginine applied at the inductionperiod was partially or wholly reversed by the simultaneousaddition of other amino acid (especially lysine) or by one additionallong day. The inhibitions by lysine, however, were not reversedby arginine. 3. AKIYAMA, S., WAKABAYASHI, M. & OHBA, H., 1992. Chromosome evolution in Himalayan Impatiens (Balsaminaceae). Chromosome numbers and karyotypes have been investigated in species of Himalayan Impatiens . In addition to confirming previous chromosome counts, the presence of a tetraploid taxon ( I. exilis) is revealed. In central and east Nepal species with x = 9 are more common than those with other basic numbers and this number is shown to be one of the most frequent numbers in the genus. Most species with x = 9 have a bimodal karyotype. The species relationships are discussed.  相似文献

DNA synthesis in the light perturbation period and its relationto the reappearance, due to light perturbation, of once faded-out"light interruption rhythm" in a long-day duckweed, Lemna gibbaG 3, were studied. After long continuous darkness, the duckweedincorporated 3H-thymidine into both nuclear and satellite DNAsunder a light condition, but into satellite DNA alone undera dark condition. The number of dividing cells in frond epidermisincreased in proportion to the length of the light perturbationperiod. This increase was inhibited by 5-fluorodeoxyuridine.From these and previous results we conclude that nuclear DNAnewly synthesized in the light is intimately related with thereappearance of the rhythm. To evaluate the effects on CO2 exchange of clearcutting a mixed forest and replacing it with a plantation, 4.5 years of continuous eddy covariance measurements of CO2 fluxes and soil respiration measurements were conducted in a conifer-broadleaf mixed forest in Hokkaido, Japan. The mixed forest was a weak carbon sink (net ecosystem exchange, −44 g C m−2 yr−1), and it became a large carbon source (569 g C m−2 yr−1) after clearcutting. However, the large emission in the harvest year rapidly decreased in the following 2 years (495 and 153 g C m−2 yr−1, respectively) as the gross primary production (GPP) increased, while the total ecosystem respiration (RE) remained relatively stable. The rapid increase in GPP was attributed to an increase in biomass and photosynthetic activity of Sasa dwarf bamboo, an understory species. Soil respiration increased in the 3 years following clearcutting, in the first year mainly owing to the change in the gap ratio of the forest, and in the following years because of increased root respiration by the bamboo. The ratio of soil respiration to RE increased from 44% in the forest to nearly 100% after clearcutting, and aboveground parts of the vegetation contributed little to the RE although the respiration chamber measurements showed heterogeneous soil condition after clearcutting.  相似文献

Translucent bract transmittance of ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR) radiation (between 320 and 800 nm) and leaf anatomy were examined in a glasshouse plant, Rheum nobile Hook. f. & Thomson (Polygonaceae) to assess the function of avoiding injury by UV radiation while keeping the inflorescence warm by photosynthetically active (PA) and IR radiation. Although the translucent bracts and rosulate leaves transmitted little UV radiation, the former always transmit more PA and IR radiation. Additionally, the bracts transmit much more scattered solar radiation than direct radiation. The bracts are also anatomically different from the rosulate leaves. They have two or three layers of mesophyll cells with neither palisade nor spongy parenchymatous cells; in addition, the uppermost layer of mesophyll and the epidermis stain easily, and both are thought to play a role in attenuating UV radiation. The leaf epidermis of many land plants has UV absorbing pigments such as flavonoids, which absorb almost all UV radiation. Thus the role of the bracts of R. nobile is to protect the reproductive organs by absorbing UV radiation and to keep them warm by transmitting PA and IR radiation. The bracts are believed to have adapted function and form to the environment, in particular, to the weather conditions of the eastern Himalaya.  相似文献

We isolated and characterized 17 polymorphic microsatellite loci for the Japanese eight‐barbel loach, Lefua echigonia, an endangered freshwater species in streams including agricultural canals in Japan. The number of observed alleles for each locus ranged from two to nine, and the values of observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.125 to 0.844 and from 0.148 to 0.876, respectively. All loci conformed to Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. Genetic linkage disequilibrium analysis between all pairs of the loci showed no significant departure from the null hypothesis between any of the loci.  相似文献

1. The rhythm of sensitivity to light interruption in a long-dayduckweed, Lemna gibba G 3, was examined. The rhythm was circadianand was suggested to be under the control of a physiologicalclock. Light given in the trough between the first and secondpeaks reset the rhythm. Five to 7 cycles of non-circadian photoperiodicregimes given entrained the rhythm to external periodicity,and this entrained rhythm persisted even after the plants weretransferred to continuous darkness. 2. It was suggested that the induction period is not determinedby the physiological clock disclosed here, but by a periodicalternation of dark-sensitivity, or by a periodic change inactivity of SS (system sensitive to IPEF, induction period extendingfactor,) as postulated previously. The Himalayan alpine herb, Rheum nobile , terminates in a stout conical compound raceme concealed by large translucent bracts. It bears many fruits even under hostile conditions such as low temperature or persistent cloudy weather. To clarify the role of the bracts, the structure and the development of the pollen grains were examined after removing the bracts to expose the flowers to the open air for 9 days. Half of the individuals with bracts removed showed 0 to 1 % of pollen stainability and the pollen grains were variable in shape and size. It was also observed that the bracts of Rheum nobile increased the temperature of inflorescence by about 10deg;C above ambient daytime temperatures. These results suggest that one of the causes for the inhibition of pollen development was low temperature. The remainder, however, indicated high stainability of 70–100%. It is suggested that the extreme difference of pollen stainability between two groups of Rheum nobile exposed to the surroundings may be related to the stage of microsporogenesis. Bracts of Rheum nobile might play an important role in normal reproduction under low temperature at high altitudes.  相似文献
