  • 1 Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera in two sites of the Upper Rhône River (France) were examined using multivariate analyses to determine: (i) relationships among seventeen species traits; (ii) habitat utilization of the fifty-five species present; (iii) the relationship between species traits and habitat utilization; (iv) trends of species traits and species richness in a framework of spatial and temporal habitat variability.
  • 2 The species traits having the highest correlation ratios correspond to reproduction or life cycle, behavioural, and morphological characteristics. According to their traits, species of Baetidae, Caenidae, and Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera) are opposite species of Perlidae and Perlodidae (Plecoptera).
  • 3 The distribution of species in thirteen habitat types of the Upper Rhône River floodplain demonstrates a transverse gradient from the main channel to the oxbow lakes. Plecoptera are restricted to the different main channel habitats; in contrast, Ephemeroptera families have a broader distribution with Baetidae and Leptophlebiidae occurring in most floodplain habitats.
  • 4 Plecoptera exhibit a significant relationship between species traits and habitat utilization but no relationship is evident for Ephemeroptera. Baetidae use many habitat types and have diverse species traits; in contrast, Leptophlebiidae, Heptageniidae, and Caenidae use many habitat types but each family has a rather uniform set of traits.
  • 5 Trends in species traits were significantly related to both the spatial and temporal variability of habitats. Considering only temporal variability, the distribution of species trait modalities (= categories) corresponded well to predictions on trends in the river habitat templet for ‘minimum age at reproduction’ and ‘potential longevity’, and in general for ‘descendants per reproductive cycle’, ‘reproductive cycles per year’, ‘potential size’, and ‘body flexibility’ trends in six other traits did not match predictions.

Worldwide ecosystems are modified by human activities and climate change. To be able to predict future changes, it is necessary to understand their respective role on population dynamics. Among the most threatened species are top predators because of their position in the food web. Albatross populations are potentially affected by both human activities, especially longline fisheries, and climatic fluctuations. Based on long‐term data (1985–2006), we conducted through a comparative approach a demographic analysis (adult survival and breeding success) on four albatross species breeding on the Indian Ocean sub‐Antarctic Islands to assess the relative impact of climate and fisheries during and outside the breeding season. The study revealed that adult survival of almost all species was not affected by climate, and therefore probably canalized against climatic variations, but was negatively affected by tuna longlining effort in three species. Breeding success was affected by climate, with contrasted effects between species, with Southern Oscillation Index having an impact on all species but one. Differences in demographic responses depended on the foraging zone and season. In order to predict population trajectories of seabirds such as albatrosses, our results show the importance of assessing the relative influence of fishing and climate impacts on demography.  相似文献

We developed 15 microsatellite loci in the poplar rust fungus, Melampsora larici‐populina, using two enrichment protocols. Polymorphism of each locus was assessed on a panel of 30 isolates, comprising three subpanels (world, regional and local scales). Thirteen loci were polymorphic with three to eight alleles detected. The 15 loci were also tested on five related Melampsora species, M. allii‐populina, M. medusae f. sp. deltoidae, M. larici‐tremulae, M. rostrupii and M. pinitorqua, and partial or global cross‐amplification events were detected.  相似文献

Upon germination, the endosperm triacylglycerols and proteinswere converted to sucrose and amino acids. During early postgerminativegrowth, the rate of sucrose and amino acid production exceededthe rate of uptake by the cotyledons. As a result, the levelsof total amino acid and sucrose in the endosperm increased;maximum levels were reached at 7 d and 10 d after imbibition(DAI), respectively. Intact seedlings were used to measure thedevelopment of valine, arginine, glutamic acid, and sucroseuptake rate throughout the course of endosperm depletion. Maximumamino acid uptake rates were measured at around 9 DAI, the highestuptake rate for sucrose was obtained at 12 DAI (just beforedepletion of the endosperm). The daily increase of sucrose andamino acid uptake could be manipulated, by replacing the endospermwith a pre-incubation solution during 1 d. The increase in sucroseuptake in vitro was equal to that measured with intact seedlingswhen the cotyledons were pre-incubated in 10 mol m–3 sucrose.Higher sucrose concentrations reduced the increase of sucroseuptake; at 300 mol m–3 sucrose (corresponding to the meanendosperm sucrose concentration) sucrose uptake after pre-incubationwas even lower than before. This reduction was largely counteractedwhen the pre-incubation solution was supplemented with minerals.The development of the valine uptake was hardly affected bysucrose, but was inhibited by several amino acids. Seedlings from Euphorbia canariensis and Euphorbia lambii weregrown in the dark at 25 °C. Protein and triglyceride contentas well as levels of sugars and amino acids in the endospermwere determined during endosperm depletion. In the endospermof Euphorbia canariensis, relatively low levels of amino acids(up to 1 µmol.endosperm–1) were found of which glutamine/glutamateaccounted for 40% at the stage of radicle emergence. High levelsof amino acids (up to 4 µmol.endosperm–1) comparedwith sugars (up to 2 µmol sucrose.endosperm–1) weredetected in the endosperm of Euphorbia lambii. Arginine wasthe main component (28 µmol%) of the amino acids in thistissue. In both species amino acid composition changed graduallyduring endosperm depletion. Cotyledons retained their ability to absorb a variety of watersoluble substrates after removal of the endosperm. 14C from[U-14C]sucrose was effectively incorporated into the triterpenesof the laticifers and to a lesser extent into the sterols ofthe seedling. The highest incorporation values were found inyoung seedlings about 2 d after the emergence of the radicle.Seedlings of this age also showed high incorporation rates of14C from labelled alanine, serine, threonine, valine, leucineand isoleucine into both triterpenols and sterols, but no generalconclusions about metabolic channelling in lipid synthesis couldbe made. A correspondence analysis of shell measurements taken from 521 widely dispersed specimens of the African aquatic pulmonate snail Biomphalaria pfeifferi suggests the existence of eight morphological groups. These groups appear to relate to either ecophysiological factors or to factors associated with the stability of the freshwater system rather than to aspects of geographic distribution and genetic isolation.  相似文献

Incidental capture of seabirds in longline fishing gear is a central issue in the conservation of many long-lived marine species. Despite growing evidence of climate-induced effects on population trends of long-lived species, climate change remains generally overlooked in most risk assessments of seabirds. Because variation in climate may interact with the detrimental effects of bycatch, considering climate is of great importance, especially in the context of ongoing global warming. This paper examines the combined effects of bycatch and climate change on the persistence of one of the world's rarest birds, the Amsterdam Albatross Diomedea amsterdamensis , which has a single population in the upland plateau of Amsterdam Island (Southeast Indian Ocean). Using continuous monitoring from 1983 onwards, we first estimated the relationship between climate and the species' demographic parameters. We then built a stochastic matrix population model to estimate the population growth rate and the probability that the population declines below the level recorded in 1983 of nine breeding pairs under different scenarios involving the joint effects of additional mortality caused by longline fisheries and climate change. The results suggest that the demography of the Amsterdam Albatross is influenced by climate in both breeding and wintering grounds and that these relationships may to some extent compensate for the impact of additive bycatch mortality. However, these compensatory effects would be negligible if the annual additional mortality exceeds around six individuals per year, suggesting that the resumption of longline fishery in the foraging range of the Amsterdam Albatross would rapidly put this species at risk of extinction.  相似文献
