We perform first principles total energy calculations to investigate the atomic structures of the adsorption of phenol (C6H5OH) on hexagonal boron nitride (BN) sheets. Calculations are done within the density functional theory as implemented in the
DMOL code. Electron-ion interactions are modeled according to the local-spin-density-approximation (LSDA) method with the
Perdew-Wang parametrization. Our studies take into account the hexagonal h-BN sheets and the modified by defects d-BN sheets.
The d-BN sheets are composed of one hexagon, three pentagons and three heptagons. Five different atomic structures are investigated:
parallel to the sheet, perpendicular to the sheet at the B site, perpendicular to the sheet at the N site, perpendicular to
the central hexagon and perpendicular to the B-N bond (bridge site). To determine the structural stability we apply the criteria
of minimum energy and vibration frequency. After the structural relaxation phenol molecules adsorb on both h-BN and d-BN sheets.
Results of the binding energies indicate that phenol is chemisorbed. The polarity of the system increases as a consequence
of the defects presence which induces transformation from an ionic to covalent bonding. The elastic properties on the BN structure
present similar behavior to those reported in the literature for graphene. 相似文献

Rice fields are an alternative habitat for waterbirds and provide food and shelter for many avian species, but there is a lack of information about how the use of rice fields translates into population level effects. The aim of this study was to test the relationship between the use of rice fields by European waterbirds and trends in their populations. We tested this relationship during the autumn migration season and during the breeding season. Based on counts conducted over the last 23 years in natural marshes and areas of rice fields in Doñana (SW Spain), an index of rice field use was constructed for 76 bird species, which was then compared to these species’ European population trends obtained from the literature. A positive relationship was found between waterbird population trends and the use of rice fields during autumn migration season. Our study suggests that changes in the Common Agriculture Policy in Europe leading to reductions in areas of rice cultivation may have important effects on waterbirds. The restoration of former marsh areas and the maintenance of rice cultivation would seem to be more environmentally friendly approaches than the use of these areas to grow alternative crops or solar farms. 相似文献

Indoleacetic acid (IAA), a factor that induces growth in epicotyls of cicer arietinum L. cv. Castellana, increases the autolytic capacity of the cell walls by 50%, suggesting that autolysis is related to the processes of cell wall loosening that accompany growth. IAA promotes an increase in the specific activities of the enzymes involved in autolysis, mainly α-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.22). This relationship autolysis-growth. was also observed in a study of the autolytic capacity of cell walls from regions of the epicotyl with different growth capacity. Levonorgestrel (LNG) is a synthetic steroid that displays potent progestional and androgenic effects but it lacks estrogen-like activity. To examine the mode of action of this progestin, we studied its metabolism in vitro in target organs and the specific interactions of LNG and its metabolites with putative steroid receptors. The results demonstrated that [3H]LNG was efficiently converted to A-ring reduced derivatives when incubated with rat hypothalamus and pituitary. Under optimal incubation conditions, [3H]5-dihydro LNG (5-LNG) and [3H]3-5-tetrahydro LNG (3,5-LNG) were identified as the major metabolic conversion products, while [3H]3ß, 5-LNG formation occured to a lesser extent. A-ring reduction of LNG was NADPH-dependent. Assessment of the relative binding affinities of LNG and its derivatives to progesterone (PR), androgen (AR) and estrogen (ER) receptors by displacement analysis revealed that unchanged LNG binds with high affinity to PR and AR but not to ER. 5-LNG exhibited a diminished though significant interactions with PR and an enhanced binding affinity for AR as compared with LNG, indicating that 5-reduction of LNG increases its affinity for AR. The most striking finding was that further reduction of the 5-LNG molecule at C-3 abolished its binding activity to PR, AR, and even to ER. The overall data provides a plausible explanation for the lack of estrogen agonistic action of LNG and for its potent progestational and androgenic effects. 相似文献

Autolysis of cell walls in pea epicotyls during growth. Enzymatic activities involved 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Pisum sativum L. (cv. Lincoln) epicotyl cell walls show autohydrolysis and release into the incubation medium up to 120 μg of sugar per mg of cell wall dry weight in 30 h. Cell walls from younger epicotyls with high growth capacity showed higher auto-lytic capacity than older epicotyls. This suggests that both processes, growth and au-tolysis, are related. The proteins responsible for autolysis were extracted from the wall fraction with high saline solution (3 M LiCl) and enzymatic activities associated with the proteins were studied. The highest activity corresponded to α-galactosidase; lower activities were found for β-galactosidase, a-arabinosidase and exoglucanase. Changes in enzymatic activities and changes in the proportion of sugars released in autolysis by cell walls during the growth of epicotyls support the notion that α-galac-tosidase is one of the enzymes involved in the process of autolysis, and that the liberation of arabinose and galactose in this process occurs as arabinogalactan. 相似文献

A comparative description of mitochondrial DNA differentiation in selected avian and other vertebrate genera 总被引:14,自引:1,他引:13
Levels of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence divergence between species
within each of several avian (Anas, Aythya, Dendroica, Melospiza, and
Zonotrichia) and nonavian (Lepomis and Hyla) vertebrate genera were
compared. An analysis of digestion profiles generated by 13-18 restriction
endonucleases indicates little overlap in magnitude of mtDNA divergence for
the avian versus nonavian taxa examined. In 55 interspecific comparisons
among the avian congeners, the fraction of identical fragment lengths (F)
ranged from 0.26 to 0.96 (F = 0.46), and, given certain assumptions, these
translate into estimates of nucleotide sequence divergence (p) ranging from
0.007 to 0.088; in 46 comparisons among the fish and amphibian congeners, F
values ranged from 0.00 to 0.36 (F = 0.09), yielding estimates of P greater
than 0.070. The small mtDNA distances among avian congeners are associated
with protein-electrophoretic distances (D values) less than approximately
0.2, while the mtDNA distances among assayed fish and amphibian congeners
are associated with D values usually greater than 0.4. Since the
conservative pattern of protein differentiation previously reported for
many avian versus nonavian taxa now appears to be paralleled by a
conservative pattern of mtDNA divergence, it seems increasingly likely that
many avian species have shared more recent common ancestors than have their
nonavian taxonomic counterparts. However, estimates of avian divergence
times derived from mtDNA- and protein-calibrated clocks cannot readily be
reconciled with some published dates based on limited fossil remains. If
the earlier paleontological interpretations are valid, then protein and
mtDNA evolution must be somewhat decelerated in birds. The empirical and
conceptual issues raised by these findings are highly analogous to those in
the long-standing debate about rates of molecular evolution and times of
separation of ancestral hominids from African apes.

Methods for computing the standard errors of branching points in an evolutionary tree and their application to molecular data from humans and apes 总被引:23,自引:2,他引:21
Statistical methods for computing the standard errors of the branching
points of an evolutionary tree are developed. These methods are for the
unweighted pair-group method-determined (UPGMA) trees reconstructed from
molecular data such as amino acid sequences, nucleotide sequences,
restriction-sites data, and electrophoretic distances. They were applied to
data for the human, chimpanzee, gorilla, orangutan, and gibbon species.
Among the four different sets of data used, DNA sequences for an
895-nucleotide segment of mitochondrial DNA (Brown et al. 1982) gave the
most reliable tree, whereas electrophoretic data (Bruce and Ayala 1979)
gave the least reliable one. The DNA sequence data suggested that the
chimpanzee is the closest and that the gorilla is the next closest to the
human species. The orangutan and gibbon are more distantly related to man
than is the gorilla. This topology of the tree is in agreement with that
for the tree obtained from chromosomal studies and DNA-hybridization
experiments. However, the difference between the branching point for the
human and the chimpanzee species and that for the gorilla species and the
human-chimpanzee group is not statistically significant. In addition to
this analysis, various factors that affect the accuracy of an estimated
tree are discussed.

A novel class of small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs), encoded in introns of protein coding genes and originating from processing of their precursor molecules, has recently been described. The L1 ribosomal protein (r-protein) gene of Xenopus laevis and its human homologue contain two snoRNAs, U16 and U18. It has been shown that these snoRNAs are excised from their intron precursors by endonucleolytic cleavage and that their processing is alternative to splicing. Two sequences, internal to the snoRNA coding region, have been identified as indispensable for processing the conserved boxes C and D. Competition experiments have shown that these sequences interact with diffusible factors which can bind both the pre-mRNA and the mature U16 snoRNA. Fibrillarin, which is known to associate with complexes formed on C and D boxes of other snoRNAs, is found in association with mature U16 RNA, as well as with its precursor molecules. This fact suggests that the complex formed on the pre-mRNA remains bound to U16 throughout all the processing steps. We also show that the complex formed on the C and D boxes is necessary to stabilize mature snoRNA. 相似文献
