The aim of this study was to determine if edema develops in the canine forelimb after relief of prolonged ischemia. Two hours of ischemia was induced either by interrupting brachial artery inflow in collateral-free innervated, naturally and constantly perfused preparations or by applying a pressure cuff in intact preparations. Changes in extravascular fluid volume were inferred from changes in limb weight. Relief of ischemia produced a transient 1.7% increase in weight in the collateral-free, naturally perfused preparation but had no effect on weight in the collateral-free, constantly perfused or intact preparations. Skin lymph flow failed to change significantly and total lymph protein concentration increased only slightly. Thus, relief of 2 hr of ischemia does not produce marked edema or a large increase in microvascular permeability to plasma proteins in the dog forelimb.  相似文献

The level of body hydration in the terrestrial slug Limax maximus modifies several aspects of behavior such as pneumostome activity, feeding responsiveness, huddling, and contact-rehydration. The relationship between water balance and pneumostome activity and respiratory function suggested that cardiac activity might also be affected. To pursue this possibility, intact slugs and isolated heart-central nervous system (CNS) preparations were used to investigate cardiac responses to the increase in hemolymph osmolality which occurs during dehydration. In intact animals, heart rate increased in response to progressive air-dehydration and to increases in hemolymph osmolality resulting from injections of hyperosmotic solutions of mannitol or NaCl. In isolated preparations, the heart or CNS were separately exposed to hyperosmotic saline. Exposure of the heart alone to hyperosmotic saline resulted in decreased heart rate while exposure of only the CNS resulted in an increase in heart rate. These observations suggest that the increase in heart rate that is observed in intact air-dehydrated slugs is primarily mediated by the CNS.  相似文献

Many major human pathogens are multihost pathogens, able to infect other vertebrate species. Describing the general patterns of host–pathogen associations across pathogen taxa is therefore important to understand risk factors for human disease emergence. However, there is a lack of comprehensive curated databases for this purpose, with most previous efforts focusing on viruses. Here, we report the largest manually compiled host–pathogen association database, covering 2,595 bacteria and viruses infecting 2,656 vertebrate hosts. We also build a tree for host species using nine mitochondrial genes, giving a quantitative measure of the phylogenetic similarity of hosts. We find that the majority of bacteria and viruses are specialists infecting only a single host species, with bacteria having a significantly higher proportion of specialists compared to viruses. Conversely, multihost viruses have a more restricted host range than multihost bacteria. We perform multiple analyses of factors associated with pathogen richness per host species and the pathogen traits associated with greater host range and zoonotic potential. We show that factors previously identified as important for zoonotic potential in viruses—such as phylogenetic range, research effort, and being vector‐borne—are also predictive in bacteria. We find that the fraction of pathogens shared between two hosts decreases with the phylogenetic distance between them. Our results suggest that host phylogenetic similarity is the primary factor for host‐switching in pathogens.  相似文献

Here we introduce a database of calibrated natural images publicly available through an easy-to-use web interface. Using a Nikon D70 digital SLR camera, we acquired about six-megapixel images of Okavango Delta of Botswana, a tropical savanna habitat similar to where the human eye is thought to have evolved. Some sequences of images were captured unsystematically while following a baboon troop, while others were designed to vary a single parameter such as aperture, object distance, time of day or position on the horizon. Images are available in the raw RGB format and in grayscale. Images are also available in units relevant to the physiology of human cone photoreceptors, where pixel values represent the expected number of photoisomerizations per second for cones sensitive to long (L), medium (M) and short (S) wavelengths. This database is distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial Unported license to facilitate research in computer vision, psychophysics of perception, and visual neuroscience.  相似文献

The oxazolidinones are promising agents for the treatment of infections caused by gram-positive bacteria, including multidrug-resistant strains. In ongoing studies we have discovered that a strategically placed chiral center of appropriate absolute configuration improves the antibacterial activity of indolinyl oxazolidinone analogues (gram-positive MIC's<0.5 microg/mL for the most potent congeners). The design, synthesis, antibacterial activity and pharmacokinetic profile of a selected series of alpha-methylated indoline derivatives and a related set of tetrahydroquinolyl and dihydrobenzoxazinyl analogues are discussed.  相似文献

Common structural biology methods (i.e., NMR and molecular dynamics) often produce ensembles of molecular structures. Consequently, averaging of 3D coordinates of molecular structures (proteins and RNA) is a frequent approach to obtain a consensus structure that is representative of the ensemble. Summary The role of the central nervous system (CNS) in the modulation of heart activity induced by feeding was investigated in the terrestrial slug,Limax maximus. Intact slugs and semi-intact preparations were used to examine the effects of food, non-nutritive bulk, digestive tract distension, and the concentration of hemolymph glucose on the control of heart activity. The heart rate of intact slugs increased following ingestion of food or nonnutritive bulk and in response to injections of glucose. The heart rate of semi-intact preparations increased in response to gradual crop inflation and to perfusion of the heart with a glucose solution for longer than 30 min. The present results indicate that the increase in heart rate observed in intact slugs following a meal is mediated in part by the CNS and in part is a direct response of the heart musculature. The CNS mediates an immediate response to proprioceptive input from stretch of the crop while the heart musculature responds directly to increased hemolymph glucose concentration following ingestion of food.  相似文献
