We describe the ultrastructure of type-I salivary-gland acini in two argasid and two ixodid species. The basic cell types in the agranular or type-I acini, and their associations, are very similar in argasids and ixodids; therefore, we propose an anatomical nomenclature for cells in the type-I acinus based on the adult ixodidsAmblyomma americanum andDermacentor variabilis, and the argasid adultArgas (Persicargas) arboreus and on nymphalOrnithodoros moubata. Four cell types were present in all specimens: one central lamellate cell, a variable number of peripheral lamellate cells, a variable number of peritubular cells depending on the species, and one circumlumenal cell. The lamellate cells had infolded basal plasma membranes that presented an amplified surface area to the hemolymph. These cells most likely secreted the fluid involved in water vapor uptake by ticks. ForAmblyomma americanum females, abundant K+-dependent, ouabain-sensitive Na+, K+-ATPase complexes were located on the infolded basal plasma membranes of the lamellate cells. Apical membranes of the lamellate cells, and plasma membranes of other cell types in the acinus had little or no evidence of Na+, K+-ATPase activity. Only the central lamellate cell extended from the hemolymph of the acinus to its lumen; peripheral cells did not contact the lumen. Except when the ticks were rehydrating, lipid inclusions were common features in the lamellate cells of the ixodids. Lipid inclusions were not seen in argasid type I acini; however, glycogen deposits were common. To determine if acinar cells respond to the changing hydration state of the tick, unfed femaleA. americanum were subjected to dehydration/rehydrating conditions. During rehydration, mitochondria in the lamellate cells changed from a matrix of medium electron-density and intermembrane space (orthodox configuration) to a matrix of greater density and larger intermembrane space (condensed configuration). The orthodox configuration was consistently observed in control and dehydrating ticks. The condensed configuration was the norm for mitochondria in lamellate cells of rehydrating ticks. Lipid inclusions were depleted in the rehydrating ticks compared to control or dehydrating ticks. Acini appeared to be reverting to the control or desiccated state when ticks were returned to low humidity, suggesting that these changes were cyclical. Nymphs ofO. moubata subjected to the same dehydration/rehydrating conditions showed no obvious ultrastructural changes.  相似文献

A kidney from the budgerigar (budgie, parakeet; Melopsittacus undulatus) is composed of cortical reptilian-type nephrons (without loops of Henle) and mammalian-type nephrons (with loops) grouped together in medullary cones. The loop of the mammalian-type nephrons has a descending segment composed of thin and highly interdigitated cells. These thin limb cells have few mitochondria (15% of cell volume), undetectable Na+,K(+)-ATPase activity, and virtually no basolateral surface amplification. Prior to the hairpin turn, the descending limb thickens, but the cells continue to lack basolateral amplification. Cells just prior to and within the hairpin turn resemble cells of the entire ascending limb. These cells are thick (there is no thin ascending segment in the avian loop), with extensive infoldings of the basolateral membrane surrounding numerous mitochondria (45% of cell volume). The area of basolateral membrane is 25 times that of the apical membrane. The basolateral membrane (but not the apical membrane) is enriched in Na+,K(+)-ATPase activity. The structure of the avian mammalian-type nephron (as epitomized by the budgie nephron) and the fact that NaCl accounts for over 90% of the osmotic activity of avian urine leads to the conclusion that the countercurrent multiplier of the avian kidney functions by active NaCl transport from the entire ascending limb. No explanation is offered for the transport specializations found in the thick descending segment of the loop, just prior to the hairpin turn.  相似文献

Social animals may share information to obtain a more complete and accurate picture of their surroundings. However, physical constraints on communication limit the flow of information between interacting individuals in a way that can cause an accumulation of errors and deteriorated collective behaviors. Here, we theoretically study a general model of information sharing within animal groups. We take an algorithmic perspective to identify efficient communication schemes that are, nevertheless, economic in terms of communication, memory and individual internal computation. We present a simple and natural algorithm in which each agent compresses all information it has gathered into a single parameter that represents its confidence in its behavior. Confidence is communicated between agents by means of active signaling. We motivate this model by novel and existing empirical evidences for confidence sharing in animal groups. We rigorously show that this algorithm competes extremely well with the best possible algorithm that operates without any computational constraints. We also show that this algorithm is minimal, in the sense that further reduction in communication may significantly reduce performances. Our proofs rely on the Cramér-Rao bound and on our definition of a Fisher Channel Capacity. We use these concepts to quantify information flows within the group which are then used to obtain lower bounds on collective performance. The abstract nature of our model makes it rigorously solvable and its conclusions highly general. Indeed, our results suggest confidence sharing as a central notion in the context of animal communication.  相似文献

We describe the assembly of a set of overlapping clones from the lin-12 III chromosomal region that spans approximately 600 kb, and the identification of two restriction fragment length polymorphisms, eP6 and eP7, that flank the lin-12 locus. A comparison of the physical map and the genetic map yields approximate measurements of 930 kb/map unit for the eP6--lin-12 interval and 830 kb/map unit for the lin-12--eP7 interval. We interpret these values as supporting the proposal that the apparent clustering of genes observed for C. elegans autosomes results from decreased recombination frequency in clusters and not from nonrandom distribution of genes on the physical map.  相似文献

Orbital roof fractures in the pediatric population   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Twenty-three patients aged 3.3 +/- 1.6 years (mean +/- SD) presented between January of 1984 and September of 1987 with fronto-orbital trauma resulting in fractures of one (N = 20) or both (N = 3) orbital roofs. All patients had computed tomography (CT) with axial and coronal sections that revealed three fracture patterns of the orbital roof (nondisplaced, superiorly displaced, and inferiorly displaced fractures). Orbital dystopia was exhibited in 35 percent (N = 8) of the patients. Exophthalmos was noted in 61 percent (N = 14) of the patients. Only 30 percent of the patients (N = 7) sustained associated maxillofacial fractures. Eight percent of fractures exhibited orbital encephaloceles. All patients lacked frontal sinus pneumatization. The majority of children with orbital roof fractures do not exhibit concomitant facial fractures. CT utilizing both axial and coronal sections is valuable in defining the extent and pattern of the fracture as well as in identifying associated neurologic injuries. Large, displaced orbital roof fractures, which occurred in 3 of 13 patients with displaced fractures in our series, should undergo early reduction to avoid late development of encephalocele.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to establish a completely in vitro system that would simulate the in vivo effects of cycloheximide (cyclo) on preovulatory serum levels of estradiol (E2) (prolonged) and progesterone (P4) (reduced). Graafian follicles were removed from proestrous hamsters at 0900 h and incubated for a basal hour (Hour 1) with various doses of cyclo before the medium was replaced; in Hour 2, 100 ng luteinizing hormone (LH) was added with cyclo added every hour for 5 or 6 h. The endpoints were steroid levels/follicle/h per ml medium of P4, 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (170HP), androstenedione (A), and E2. The goal was best accomplished with hourly addition of 400 ng cyclo, which reduced follicular protein synthesis by 76%. Cyclo suppressed P4 and 170HP and prolonged the accumulation of A and E2, in Hour 5 and Hour 6, correlated with sustained thecal C-17,20-lyase/17 alpha-hydroxylase as determined by enzyme assays. Cyclo therefore prevented the early demise of the enzyme complex after LH stimulation and hence prolonged the ability of the theca to provide androgens for conversion to E2 by the granulosa cells. Our earlier work established that one of the major effects of LH is to recruit the granulosa compartment as a source of C-21 steroids, and cyclo interferes with the availability of cholesterol to mitochondrial side-chain cleavage (Greenwald and Limback, 1984). Thus, cyclo affects follicular steroidogenesis through different mechanisms in theca and granulosa.  相似文献

Summary DNA markers in the pericentromeric region of human chromosome 21 have shown linkage to a gene for Familial Alzheimer disease (FAD; St. George Hyslop et al. 1987). The limited informativeness of probes for the loci D21S13 and D21S16 have hindered precise mapping of the FAD locus and analysis of non-allelic heterogeneity in FAD (Schellenberg et al. 1988; St. George-Hyslop et al. 1987). We recently described a new EcoRII polymorphism at the D21S13 locus that was very informative in a large FAD pedigree (Pulst et al. 1990a, b). We now report another polymorphism for the D21S13 locus that further increases the informativeness of this locus.  相似文献

We studied 70 patients (48 women and 22 men) with either rheumatic disease (n = 25) or lung disease (n = 45) who had been treated with glucocorticoids for at least 6 months (mean cumulative dose, 24.2 +/- 27.1 g of prednisone; mean current dose, 11.0 +/- 8.6 mg/d, mean duration of therapy, 8.1 years. We measured bone mineral density (BMD) of the hip (femoral neck) and spine (L2-L4) using dual-photon absorptiometry and BMD of the distal one third radius using single-photon absorptiometry. Compared with age-matched controls, the study population had decreased BMD of the spine (87.0%), hip (87.2%), and radius (90.6%). Current dose, cumulative dose, and duration of therapy were not correlated with BMD in the spine or hip in the total study population. The most significant correlations with low bone mass at the hip and spine were short height and low weight. There was a high incidence of hypercalciuria (30%) as compared with an age- and sex-matched control group (6.4%). Glucocorticoids are known to decrease vertebral and radial bone density. We conclude that glucocorticoids also decrease hip bone density as measured at the femoral neck. The high incidence of hypercalciuria may have implications for therapy of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.  相似文献

Intact or hypophysectomized 23-day-old hamsters and rats were injected s.c. with 2 mg diethylstilboestrol (DES) or 1 mg oestradiol cyclopentylpropionate (OECP) on Days 23-25 and killed on Day 26. Although serum oestradiol was elevated to the same high levels by OECP, ovarian and uterine weights were increased in the rat by OECP or DES whereas only the uterus responded in the hamster. This correlated with the ability of the oestrogens to increase significantly the number of large preantral and antral follicles in the intact rat but only the number of follicles with 2-3 layers of granulosa cells in the immature hamster. Qualitative study revealed that DES and OECP increased the number of large preantral follicles in the adult hypophysectomized rat but were ineffective in the adult hamster. It is concluded that for the immature and adult hamster oestrogens do not play a major role in the recruitment of large preantral follicles.  相似文献

In vitro exposure for 2 h to 250 ng/ml of pregnenolone led to increased production of progesterone and 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17 alpha-OHP) by hamster ovaries on Days 5, 10 and 15 of age. Similar incubations with 250 ng/ml progesterone or androstenedione caused significant increases in 17 alpha-OHP or testosterone, respectively. When testosterone was added in doses of 32.5, 250 and 500 ng/ml to ovaries on Days 5-30, as early as Day 5 the ovaries aromatized the androgen to estradiol. Day 30 ovaries were the most efficient in the conversion because antral follicles, the principal site for aromatization, were then present. In terms of progesterone production, 400 ng/ml of luteinizing hormone (LH) during 4 h of in vitro incubation stimulated ovaries on Days 5, 10 and 15. Cyclic adenosine 3':5' monophosphate (cAMP) at a dose of 1 mM and 5 mM stimulated progesterone production by Days 5 and 10 ovaries more efficiently than LH. However, Day 15 ovaries produced more progesterone in response to LH compared to cAMP. These experiments establish that the steroidogenic enzymes differentiate at a very early age in the hamster ovary, even before the appearance of gonadotropin receptors. The inability of the early postnatal ovary to produce steroids is apparently attributable to lack of precursors such as cholesterol or cholesterol side chain cleavage enzymes.  相似文献
