The effects of cage fish farming on physico-chemical and bacteriological water quality in Lake Volta, Ghana, were investigated in 2013–2014. Farmed and unfarmed (control) areas of the lake were selected for monitoring. Nutrients, temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, turbidity, pH, total coliforms, Pseudomonas and Vibrio spp. in the water were monitored monthly. Analyses of the water samples were carried out according to standard procedures. Physico-chemical quality of the water in both farm and control sites were within ranges typical of minimally impacted water and did not vary significantly between the two contrasting sites. The bacteriological analysis, however, revealed contamination of the lake water by fish farming. The bacterial counts at the farmed sites were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those of the control sites, with figures at the farmed sites ranging from 132 to 1 708 cfu 100 ml?1 for total coliforms, 514 to 5 170 cfu 100 ml?1 Pseudomonas spp. and 14 to 516 cfu 100 ml?1 for Vibrio spp. The results suggested that cage fish farming has increased bacterial loads in the lake water, but has had minimal impact on its physico-chemical quality.  相似文献

This paper presents a summary of reported cases of Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) following treatment with Mectizan® (ivermectin, Merck, Sharpe &; Dohme) in onchocerciasis mass treatment programs from January 1, 1989 to December 31, 2001 through a passive surveillance system. A total of 207 SAE cases were reported out of approximately 165 million reported treatments delivered during the period under review, giving rise to a cumulative incidence of 1 reported SAE per 800,000 reported treatments. The mean age was 40 years and 70% of the cases were males. The mean time between ivermectin intake and onset of illness was 1 day. For 57% of the cases (n = 118), that was their first exposure to ivermectin. The majority of cases were reported from Cameroon (n = 176; 85%) with peaks in the incidence of SAE reporting in 1989–1991 and 1994–1995 when the program expanded to ivermectin-naïve populations. Fifty-five percent of the cases from Cameroon (i.e. 97 out of 176 cases) were encephalopathic and were reported from the central-southern region of the country; two-thirds of these cases were 'probable' or 'possible' cases of Loa loa encephalopathy temporally related to ivermectin treatment. Reporting bias may explain some but not all of the differences in SAE reporting between the 34 onchocerciasis-endemic countries that have, or have had, mass treatment programs. Further research is needed to understand the apparent clustering of encephalopathy cases in central-southern Cameroon since L. loa infection alone probably does not explain the increased incidence of this type of SAE from this region.  相似文献

Surficial sediment and sedimenting material were sampled during spring and summer 1991 in Lake Erken. Sediment was analyzed for redox potential, P concentrations and bacterial biomass. Sedimentation and chlorophyll a concentrations of sedimenting matter were determined. Additionally, different phosphorus forms in surficial sediment were quantified using sequential fractionation. The resulting dataset was used to study the effects of sedimentation events following phytoplankton blooms and benthic bacterial biomass on the size of the various phosphorus pools in the sediment.Sedimentation of spring diatoms caused a rapid increase in the NH4Cl- and NaOH-extractable P (NH4Cl–P and NaOH–rP) in the sediment. During sedimentation, NaOH–rP and NH4Cl–P increased within 3 days from 422 ± 17 g g–1 DW to 537 ± 8.0 g g–1 DW and from 113 ± 13 g g–1 DW to 186 ± 26 g g–1 DW, respectively. The NaOH–nrP (non-reactive P) fraction made up about 17% of Tot-P in sediment samples, whereas NaOH–rP and HCl–P made up 25% each. All P forms showed considerable seasonal variation. Significant relationships were found between bacterial biomass and the NaOH–nrP and NH4Cl–P fractions in the sediment, respectively. Also regressions of NaOH–nrP and NH4Cl–P versus the chlorophyll a concentration of sedimenting matter were highly significant. These regressions lend support to the conjecture that NaOH–nrP is a conservative measure of bacterial poly-P.  相似文献

Secondary corrections of the vulva in male-to-female transsexuals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
From December of 1980 to May of 1998, 390 male-to-female transsexuals underwent vaginoplasty by inversion of the penile skin and a triangular perineoscrotal flap. Although minor modifications were made throughout the years, the basic surgical technique remained the same over this 17.5-year period. In 86 of the 390 patients (22 percent), secondary corrections of the vulva were deemed necessary. A total of 130 corrections were performed in these 86 patients. In the same 17.5-year period, the authors performed 26 secondary corrective procedures in 19 patients in whom the initial vaginoplasty had been done elsewhere. Bilateral Z-plasties were performed 69 times to center the labia in instances when the ventral part of the labia majora remained too far apart. This is not advisable, primarily because it will reduce the vascular supply of the penile skin flap. Introital widening by five-flap advancement was performed in 40 cases in which a dorsal skin fold obstructed the introitis. The use of the triangular perineoscrotal flap favors the vaginal and introital width, but its base should be close to the anal ring to prevent such a skin fold. Secondary construction of the labia minora was performed 27 times, and a skin reduction of the labia majora was performed 20 times. So far, the authors have been unable to develop a satisfactory method for primary construction of the labia minora. Because the appearance of the vulva may charge gradually during the first postoperative year, secondary vulvar corrections should not be performed in that period.  相似文献

Identifying resilience mechanisms to recurrent ecosystem perturbations   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The complex nature of ecological systems limits the unambiguous determination of mechanisms that drive resilience to natural disturbance or anthropogenic stress. Using eight-year time series data from boreal lakes with and without bloom formation of an invasive alga (Gonyostomum semen, Raphidophyceae), we studied resilience of phytoplankton communities in relation to recurring bloom impacts. We first characterized phytoplankton community dynamics in both lake types using univariate metrics of community structure (evenness, species richness, biovolume and Simpson diversity). All metrics, except species richness, were substantially altered and showed an inherent stronger variability in bloom lakes relative to reference lakes. We assessed resilience mechanisms using a multivariate time series modelling technique. The models captured clear successional dynamics of the phytoplankton communities in all lakes, whereby different groups of species were substituted sequentially over the ice-free period. The models also identified that G. semen impacts in bloom lakes were only manifested within a single species group, not across species groups, highlighting the rapid renewal of the phytoplankton communities upon bloom collapse. These results provide empirical support of the cross-scale resilience model. Cross-scale resilience could provide an explanation for the paradox that similar species richnesses are seen in bloom-forming lakes and reference lakes despite the clear difference between the community features of the two different sets of lakes investigated.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Spatial correlations between ecological patterns and processes are thought to be scale-dependent, yet surprisingly few studies have evaluated the correspondence between different levels of spatial scale and ecosystem structure and function.
2. We evaluated the strength of relationships between the benthic macroinvertebrate communities of stony littoral habitats and levels of ecological scale and geographical position, using partial constrained ordination. Our hypothesis was that correlation strength would be inversely related to ecological scale, i.e. habitat > ecosystem > riparian > catchment > ecoregion.
3. The effect of habitat was greater than that of other levels of spatial scale: 23% of the variance in taxonomic composition and 11% of that in functional composition was explained by habitat variables alone. However, greater spatial scales were also important. For example, the combined influence of riparian, catchment and ecoregion classification accounted for 24% (taxonomic) and 11% (functional) of the explained variance.
4. Relationships between organisms and scale variables were, however, non-linear and a substantial amount of the functional variance was hidden in joint effects. These findings were not unexpected, and presumably indicate a close interdependence between local and regional-scale variables.  相似文献

The effects of natural nematode communities on bacterial activity and abundance were investigated in a microcosm study. Nematodes were added at different densities to a freshwater sediment and bacterial parameters were measured after 1, 5, 9, and 17 days. Significant effects of nematode density on bacterial activity were noted on day 5. No long-term changes in bacterial activity were recorded. Bacterial abundance displayed an overall decrease in both treatments and controls. In a second experiment, the effect of nematode feeding-type on bacterial activity was studied. Microcosms were incubated with 100 individuals of a fungus-feeding (Aphelenchus avenae) or a bacteria-feeding nematode species (Caenorhabditis elegans) respectively, and bacterial activity was determined after 0, 1, 2, 4, and 7 days. Significant time and feeding-type effects were found, with consistently higher bacterial activity estimates in treatments with bacteria-feeding nematodes. These results suggest that grazing affects bacterial activity, and indicate that grazing by nematodes may be more important in stimulating bacterial activity than bioturbation or excretion. Combining these results, we conclude that natural nematode communities may have an impact on bacterial activity, and that the magnitude of this impact depends on the proportion of actively feeding bactivores within the community. Abstract The response of a sediment microbial assemblage to a pulse of diatoms was studied over 36 days by measuring bacterial activity and biomass, ATP concentration, and overall community respiration in laboratory microcosms. Also, the contribution of macrofaunal chironomids to the decomposition of settling diatoms in benthic communities, and the relative importance of benthic meiofauna in community metabolism, were determined. The addition of diatoms resulted in an immediate response by sediment bacteria, with higher bacterial production recorded after only 2 h, and a more than tenfold increase within one day. The rapid response by sediment bacteria was accompanied by relatively high initial concentrations of dissolved organic carbon. In treatments receiving diatoms, higher bacterial production was sustained throughout the experiment. Surprisingly, neither these elevated production estimates, nor the starvation of controls affected bacterial abundance. Mean bacterial cell volume, however, was markedly affected by the addition of diatoms. Combining community respiration measurements and bacterial production estimates showed that growth efficiencies for sediment bacteria ranged from 14.6 to 34.5%. The contribution of ambient meiozoobenthos to carbon metabolism was less than 1%. Carbon budgets showed that 1.3 mg C was cooxidized along with 4.3 mg added diatom C. Sediment reworking by Chironomus larvae initially enhanced bacterial production, but the presence of Chironomus resulted in lower bacterial production estimates after 16 and 36 days. This was interpreted as a result of faster decomposition of diatoms in treatments with chironomids, which was validated by a faster decline of ATP and chlorophyll a in the sediment. Propolis is a multi-functional bee product rich in polyphenols. In this study, the inhibitory effect of Anatolian propolis against SARS-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) was investigated in vitro and in silico. Raw and commercial propolis samples were used, and both samples were found to be rich in caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, t-cinnamic acid, hesperetin, chrysin, pinocembrin, and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) at HPLC-UV analysis. Ethanolic propolis extracts (EPE) were used in the ELISA screening test against the spike S1 protein (SARS-CoV-2): ACE-2 interaction for in vitro study. The binding energy values of these polyphenols to the SARS-CoV-2 spike and ACE-2 protein were calculated separately with a molecular docking study using the AutoDock 4.2.6 program. In addition, the pharmacokinetics and drug-likeness properties of these eight polyphenols were calculated according to the SwissADME tool. The binding energy value of pinocembrin was highest in both receptors, followed by chrysin, CAPE, and hesperetin. Based on the in silico modeling and ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) behaviors of the eight polyphenols, the compounds exhibited the potential ability to act effectively as novel drugs. The findings of both studies showed that propolis has a high inhibitory potential against the Covid-19 virus. However, further studies are now needed.  相似文献

The object was to determine the influence of dietary vitamin E, selenium and their combination on the fatty acid con-tent of erythrocytes, bone marrow and spleen lipids of Akkaraman lambs. After supplementation for 15 days, the amount of all fatty acids was slightly higher (p < 0·05) in the vitamin E as compared to the control group, whereas the amount of longer fatty acids was significantly higher (p < 0·01, p < 0·001) in the selenium and combination groups. On the thirtieth day, the amount of all fatty acids was slightly high (p < 0·5) in all the supplemented groups in comparison with the control group. In the bone marrow lipids, the amount of longer fatty acids was decreased (p < 0·05, p < 0·01, p < 0·001) in the vitamin E and combination groups as compared to the control. Although the amount of some fatty acids was high (p < 0·05, p < 0·01) in the selenium group compared to the control, linoleic (18:2), linolenic (18:3) and the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were lower (p < 0·05, p < 0·001). In the spleen lipids, the amount of longer fatty acids was slightly decreased (p < 0·05) in the vitamin E group as compared with the control; however the amount of longer fatty acids was significantly higher (p < 0·05, p < 0·01) in the selenium and combination groups in comparison to the control group. Thus dietary supplementation with selenium was more effective than dietary vitamin E supplementation in altering the fatty acid content of the erythrocyte, bone marrow and spleen lipids. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
