Correlation of cotylenol with the aglycone of fusicoccin

The stereostructure of cotylenol, the aglycone of the cotylenins, has been confirmed by chemical correlation with the aglycone of fusicoccin A.     

Ultrastructural investigations on Lycopersicum peruvianum pollen activation and pollen tube organization after self-and cross-pollination

No differences have been observed in vivo between Lycopersicum peruvianum compatible and incompatible pollen during activation and pollen tube emission and organization, that is until 4 h and 30 min after pollination. During pollen activation the main events are the setting free of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) cisterns which were stacked in the mature pollen, the increase in the number of polysomes, and a great activity of the dictyosomes. Immediately after germination of the vegetative nucleus and the generative cell move into the tube, the generative cell diviting to form the male gametes; the tube then becomes organized in four zones. This series of changes is similar to what has already been observed in vitro except that in vitro the generative cell remains undivided and the whole process from seeding to tube organization takes 3 h instead of 4 h and 30 min after pollination, as it does in vivo. Biosynthesis of 1α,2α,3β-trihydroxy-p-menthane by Fusicoccum amygdali

Measurement of isotope ratios in 1α,2α,3β-trihydroxy-p-menthane, which has been biosynthesized in Fusicoccum amygdali from ³H- and ¹⁴C-labelled mevalonate and in its degradation product diosphenol indicates that: (a) four tritium atoms arising from [5-³H₂, 2-¹⁴C]MVA are retained, one more than suggested from the hydroxylation pattern, (b) menth-2-ene-1-ol is generated from an α-terpinyl cation through a 1,3-hydride shift and (c) trans-cleavage of an α-epoxide by hydrolysis gives 1α,2α,3β-trihydroxy-p-menthane.     

La Marana di Ciminiera (Foggia)

Summary

A «marana» of the Foggia Plain (Puglie) is a depression where water accumulates from the surrounding higher ground, and, very often, springs from the undersoil where the clay layer curves upwards. The soil is generally saline. It is not tillled but is grazed by herds of water-buffaloes. In the Marana di Ciminiera the auth. has found a mosaic of highly saline soils (with Salicornia fruticosa, Suaeda fruticosa, etc.), subsaline meadows (with Juncus acutus, Althaea officinalis, etc.), and fairly deep bogs, mostly drying up in summer (with Iris Pseudo-Acorus, Typha angustifolia, Phragmites communis, etc.).

A dense stand of Inula Helenium, one of Ligustrum vulgare, Lonicera etrusca, Crataegus Oxyacantha, Thalictrum flavum, Schoenus nigricans, and the general aspect of Lago della Contessa are described. Plants collected in the «marana» are listed.     

An RFLP marker in tomato linked to the Fusarium oxysporum resistance gene I2

Summary The locus, I2, which in tomato confers resistance against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici race 2, was introgressed into Lycopersicon esculentum from the wild species L. pimpinellifolium (P.I. 126915). We searched for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) between nearly isogenic lines (NILs) in clones that map to the region introgressed from the wild species. Since I2 maps to chromosome 11, we used DNA clones from this chromosome as hybridization probes to Southern blots containing bound DNA of the NILs digested with 23 restriction enzymes. Of the 14 chromosome 11 clones, 9 exhibited polymorphism. These clones were further hybridized to verification filters that contained DNA from resistant and susceptible L. esculentum varieties digested with the enzymes that gave the polymorphism. One clone, TG105, was found to be associated with I2; 19 susceptible lines showed a different RFLP with this probe than 16 resistant lines, including the original L. pimpinellifolium accession used as a source for the resistance gene. These results together with our mapping analysis indicate that TG105 is closely linked to the resistance gene.     

Development of spherical organelles from the endoplasmic reticulum in the nucellus of some Euphorbia species

Summary The development of characteristic cytoplasmic inclusions from endoplasmic-reticulum (ER) cisternae in nucellar cells of some species of Euphorbia has been studied by electron microscopy. The formation of these organelles is preceded by the appearance of rough ER cisternae filled with an electron-dense material and forming complicated networks. Vesicular structures are formed which grow rapidly to give electron-dense, spherical dilations. On the outer surface of their limiting membrane numerous ribosomes and often polysomes are present. This membrane can be seen to remain continuous with the membranes of one or more cisternae of the rough ER up to when the dilations have a maximum diameter of 2.5–3 . At this time, continuity between the ER cisternae and the spherical dilations ceases. After this the new cell organelles remain unchanged in size, shape, and electron-density until the cell is disintegrated by the growing embryo-sac. RFLP mapping of I1, a new locus in tomato conferring resistance against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici race 1

Summary The inheritance and linkage relationships of a gene for resistance to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici race 1 were analyzed. An interspecific hybrid between a resistant Lycopersicon pennellii and a susceptible L. esculentum was backcrossed to L. esculentum. The genotype of each backcross-1 (BC₁) plant with respect to its Fusarium response was determined by means of backcross-2 progeny tests. Resistance was controlled by a single dominant gene, I1, which was not allelic to I, the traditional gene for resistance against the same fungal pathogen that was derived from L. pimpinellifolium. Linkage analysis of 154 molecular markers that segregated in the BC₁ population placed I1 between the RFLP markers TG20 and TG128 on chromosome 7. The flanking markers were used to verify the assignment of the I1 genotype in the segregating population. The results are discussed with reference to the possibility of cloning Fusarium resistance genes in tomato.     

Effects of ophiobolin B on cell enlargement and H+/K+ exchange in maize coleoptile tissues

Ophiobolin B (OPH B), a sesterpene metabolite of Helminthosporium oryzae, inhibits proton extrusion from maize coleoptiles. Moreover OPH B counteracts the biological activity of fusicoccin (FC), another terpenoid toxin produced by Fusicoccum amygdali having a similar basic chemical structure: OPH B inhibits FC-promoted proton extrusion, potassium uptake and cell enlargement.The findings suggest that the effect of OPH B in stimulating electrolites, glucose and aminoacid leakage, reported in a previous paper, can be explained by the capacity of the toxin to inhibit proton extrusion.Abbreviations FC fusicoccin - OPH B ophiobolin B
