All living trees (30 cm gbh) were enumerated in 104 80×80 m plots arranged along four transects in the Douala-Edea Forest Reserve Cameroun, a system of low-lying ancient coastal sand dunes interspersed by numerous streams and swamps. The extent of permanent and seasonal swamps was recorded for each plot. Two hundred thirty taxa were recognized of which 63% were identified to species. Mean tree density was 376 ha–1, basal area 31.0 m2 ha–1 and number of species per plot 39. The Olacaceae were the most abundant family in terms of basal area, but the Euphorbiaceae the most frequently represented. The most abundant species wasCoula edulis (Olacaceae). Twenty-two plots had most of their area permanently or seasonally swamped. Percentage sand, silt and clay ranged between 32–100, 0–64, 0–21% respectively. The ranges for other variables recorded were: pH (2.7–5.4), organic carbon (1.5–12.4%), available phosphorus (7–90 ppm) and potassium (28–188 ppm), and nitrogen (ammonium 4–40 ppm, nitrate 1–12 ppm).Classification of the plots on the basis of six soil variables provided three large distinct groups: swamp plots and non-swamp plots, the latter divided into plots of low and high available soil phosphorus. Swamp plots were distinguished by high abundances ofProtomegabaria stapfiana andLibrevillea klainei, though correspondence ordination of plots in these groups showedP. stapfiana associated with more clayey soils andLibrevillea klainei (andGluema ivorensis) on the very sandy soils. Direct gradient analysis highlighted several species associated with these lower phosphorus soils. Available soil phosphorus is not as low at Douala-Edea as in parts of Korup, and the association of these Douala-Edea soils with the Caesalpinioideae is correspondingly weaker.Nomenclature follows Aubréville (1963–1983).The field work was supported by grant numbers RR00167-14, RR00167-15 and RR0167-16 from the National Institutes of Health for the operation of the Wisconsin Regional Primate Research Center, and N.A.T.O. Summary The dry matter digestibility of 94 species of leaf was assayed by a simple method involving sequential treatment with pepsin and fungal cellulase enzymes. It was demonstrated that for foliage from rainforest trees of a wide range of dicotyledonous plant families the assay showed high positive correlation with estimates of dry matter digestibility obtained using rumenliquor from a fistulated steer. Both assays were found to reflect negative correlates of digestibility, notably fibre and condensed tannin, rather than the nutritional value of an item. The higher dry matter digestibility of immature leaves relative to mature leaves appeared to be accounted for by their lower fibre content. It is suggested that the pepsin/cellulase assay offers a cheap, quick, routine method of gaining information on the effects of some types of plant secondary compounds (digestibility reducers) on the food potential of different kinds of foliage to herbivores. Its use in studies of herbivory in rainforest areas in relation to analyses for plant secondary compounds and food selection by herbivores is discussed.Publication 20-018 of the Wisconsin Regional Primate Research Center  相似文献

Background

Very often genome-wide data analysis requires the interoperation of multiple databases and analytic tools. A large number of genome databases and bioinformatics applications are available through the web, but it is difficult to automate interoperation because: 1) the platforms on which the applications run are heterogeneous, 2) their web interface is not machine-friendly, 3) they use a non-standard format for data input and output, 4) they do not exploit standards to define application interface and message exchange, and 5) existing protocols for remote messaging are often not firewall-friendly. To overcome these issues, web services have emerged as a standard XML-based model for message exchange between heterogeneous applications. Web services engines have been developed to manage the configuration and execution of a web services workflow.  相似文献

Introduction

The vast difference in the abundance of different proteins in biological samples limits the determination of the complete proteome of a cell type, requiring fractionation of proteins and peptides before MS analysis.  相似文献

Changes in gibberellin-like activity and content of indole type auxins were investigated during grain development of the two high-lysine barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes Sv 73608 and Risø 1508, and their corresponding normal cultivars Mona and Bomi. A peak in gibberellin-like activity was found in developing grains of the normal cultivars about 18 days after anthesis, whereas the grains of the high-lysine genotypes showed a two to five times higher maximum about 3–4 days later. The auxin content of the cultivar Bomi showed a maximum between the 22nd and the 29th day after anthesis, whereas, throughout their development the grains of the mutant Risø 1508 exhibited only about 1/10 of the maximum level of auxin found in the grains of Bomi. The normal cultivar Mona also displayed higher contents of auxin than the high-lysine genotypes Sv 73608, particularly at the later stages of grain growth, but the differences in concentration were considerable smaller than for the pair ‘Bomi’—‘Risø 1508’. It is suggested that auxins play an important role in the development of barley grains.  相似文献

Observations on the behaviour and ecology of Patas monkeys in Cameroon complement those made in Uganda by Hall (1965) and contribute to an understanding of the proximate factors involved in the maintenance of Patas social structure and to seasonal changes in their behaviour and ecology. The heterosexual groups had a mean size of 21. Five all-male groups were seen. High proportions of similarly sized infants indicate that there is a birth season at Waza from November to January inclusive. At the peak of the dry season intergroup contacts were very common at the water holes. The frequency of agonistic encounters increased remarkably at this time, especially between monkeys of different groups. The nature of these encounters indicated that the harem males are effective in driving off extragroup males and that females and juveniles are instrumental in maintaining space and social exclusiveness between heterosexual groups. The frequency of interspecific encounters also increased at the peak of the dry season.  相似文献

All living trees (30 cm gbh) were enumerated in 135 80×80 m plots, each subdivided into four 40×40 m subplots, and arranged along four 5 km transect lines in the Korup Forest Reserve, Cameroun. For each plot altitude, slope and the extent of permanent and seasonal swamps were recorded.Four hundred and eleven taxa were recognized of which 66% were identified to species. Mean tree density was 471 ha–1, basal area 27.6 m2 ha–1 and number of species per plot 75. The subfamily Caesalpinioideae (Leguminosae) was the most abundant family/subfamily in terms of basal area, but the Scytopetalaceae the most frequently represented, mainly on account ofOubanguia alata. Ten plots had at least three quarters of their area permanently swamped, and three, to a similar extent, were seasonally swamped. The ranges in sand, silt and clay content were 60–91, 0–24 and 4–20% respectively. The pH value, organic carbon content and nitrate-nitrogen concentration ranged between 4.0–5.8, 1.3–5.7% and 0–35 ppm respectively. The largest soil variations were in available phosphorus, range 2–29 ppm, and potassium, 38–375 ppm.Correspondence analysis ordination of all plots showed a major indirect floristic gradient correlated with increasing altitude, slope and soil phosphorus and potassium. Removal of the topographic effect by separate re-ordinations of four groups of plots at low, middle (2) and high altitude/slopes highlighted a strong correlation of the main floristic gradients of the middle altitude/slope groups with the concentration of available soil phosphorus.Direct gradient analysis using all plots with respect to available soil phosphorus concentration confirmed the indirect analyses. Individual species response to phosphorus were also shown by direct comparisons in the vegetation on plots of high and low available soil phosphorus concentration. Low available phosphorus soils (5 ppm) are strongly associated with species of the subfamily Caesalpinioideae, especially of the tribes Amherstieae and Detarieae. It is suggested that this result is probably due to the ability of these particular legume tribes to form associations with ectotrophic mycorrhizae. The field work was supported by grant numbers RROO167-17, RROO167-18 and RROO167-19 from the National Institutes of Health for the operation of the Wisconsin Regional Primate Center, N.A.T.O. Dehalococcoides bacteria are the only organisms known to completely reduce chlorinated ethenes to the harmless product ethene. However, Dehalococcoides dechlorinate these chemicals more effectively and grow more robustly in mixed microbial communities than in isolation. In this study, the phylogenetic composition and gene content of a functionally stable trichloroethene-degrading microbial community was examined using metagenomic sequencing and analysis. For phylogenetic classification, contiguous sequences (contigs) longer than 2500 bp were grouped into classes according to tetranucleotide frequencies and assigned to taxa based on rRNA genes and other phylogenetic marker genes. Classes were identified for Clostridiaceae, Dehalococcoides, Desulfovibrio, Methanobacterium, Methanospirillum, as well as a Spirochete, a Synergistete, and an unknown Deltaproteobacterium. Dehalococcoides contigs were also identified based on sequence similarity to previously sequenced genomes, allowing the identification of 170 kb on contigs shorter than 2500 bp. Examination of metagenome sequences affiliated with Dehalococcoides revealed 406 genes not found in previously sequenced Dehalococcoides genomes, including 9 cobalamin biosynthesis genes related to corrin ring synthesis. This is the first time that a Dehalococcoides strain has been found to possess genes for synthesizing this cofactor critical to reductive dechlorination. Besides Dehalococcoides, several other members of this community appear to have genes for complete or near-complete cobalamin biosynthesis pathways. In all, 17 genes for putative reductive dehalogenases were identified, including 11 novel ones, all associated with Dehalococcoides. Genes for hydrogenase components (271 in total) were widespread, highlighting the importance of hydrogen metabolism in this community. PhyloChip analysis confirmed the stability of this microbial community.  相似文献
