Tactical Voting in Plurality Elections

How often will elections end in landslides? What is the probability for a head-to-head race? Analyzing ballot results from several large countries rather anomalous and yet unexplained distributions have been observed. We identify tactical voting as the driving ingredient for the anomalies and introduce a model to study its effect on plurality elections, characterized by the relative strength of the feedback from polls and the pairwise interaction between individuals in the society. With this model it becomes possible to explain the polarization of votes between two candidates, understand the small margin of victories frequently observed for different elections, and analyze the polls'' impact in American, Canadian, and Brazilian ballots. Moreover, the model reproduces, quantitatively, the distribution of votes obtained in the Brazilian mayor elections with two, three, and four candidates.     

Carbonic Anhydrases in Chick Extra-embryonic Structures: A Role for CA in Bicarbonate Reabsorption Through the Chorioallantoic Membrane

The villus cavity cells, a specific cell type of the chick chorioallantoic membrane, express both cytosolic carbonic anhydrase in their cytoplasm and [Formula: See Text] anion exchangers at their basolateral membranes. By immunohistochemical analysis, we show here that villus cavity cells specifically react with antibodies directed against the membrane-associated form of carbonic anhydrase, CAIV. Staining is restricted to the apical cell membranes, characteristically invaginated toward the shell membrane, as well as to endothelia of blood vessels present in the mesodermal layer. The occurrence of a membrane-associated CA form at the apical pole of villus cavity cells, when definitively confirmed, would be fairly consistent with the role proposed for these cells in bicarbonate reabsorption from the eggshell so to prevent metabolic acidosis in the embryo during development.     

Identification of UDP-linked murein precursors as contaminants in recombinant proteins of low molecular weight.

The A(280)/A(260) ratio of a purified protein is frequently used as an indication of the purity of the preparation with respect to nucleic acids. We show here that for low-molecular-weight recombinant proteins purified from Escherichia coli, a low A(280)/A(260) ratio can also result from contamination with UDP-linked murein precursors derived from bacterial cell wall metabolism. Although these precursors are small molecules of molecular weight 1000-1200, they comigrate in gel filtration with recombinant human FKBP (MW 11,820). This gel filtration behavior, which is distinct from that of unmodified mononucleotides, does not reflect binding interactions with FKBP, but is an intrinsic property of these precursors. Therefore, these molecules would be expected to copurify with other low-molecular-weight proteins, especially in the abbreviated purification protocols made possible by freeze-thaw release of recombinant proteins from E. coli (Johnson, B. H., and Hecht, M. H. (1994) BioTechnology 12, 1357-1360). Several alternative strategies are discussed for integrating these findings into the design of improved purification procedures for low-molecular-weight recombinant proteins.     

Reassessment of the vocal repertoire of a nest-building gladiator frog,Boana pardalis (Anura,Hylidae, Cophomantinae): implications for its diagnosis within the B. faber species group

In this study, we re-describe the advertisement and territorial calls of Boana pardalis, carry out an acoustic comparison between the studied species and the other congeners of the B. faber group, and report for the first time the tympanic amplexus for the studied species. The advertisement call of B. pardalis can be used to supplement its diagnosis in the B. faber group based on temporal call traits, e.g. emission rate and emission pattern, as well as the call envelope.     

Isolation of macrocyclic and non-macrocyclic trichothecenes (stachybotrys and fusarium toxins) from the Environment of 200 III Sport Horses

Satratoxins H and G, verrucarin J, and roridin E were isolated from the bedding straw of 200 sport horses exhibiting typical symptoms of stachybotryo-toxicosis. At the same time, the oat feed consumed by the horses contained non-macrocyclicFusarium trichothecenes: T-2 toxin and diacetoxyscirpenol.     

Ecological aspects of swidden cultivation among the Andoke and Witoto Indians of the Colombian Amazon

The investigation of crop and soil-crop conditions among Andoke and Witoto cultivators in southeast Colombia is used as a basis for assessing Geertz' (1963) model of swidden cultivation. In this respect, the extent to which maniocdominated swiddens in the study area simulate the structure and composition of the forest climax community is questioned. As Geertz (1963) indicates, an initial nutrient boost for crop cultivation results from the preliminary burning of forest debris, but weed competition, rather than progressive loss of soil fertility, is reported to be the primary cause of abandoning manioc cultivation after 2–3 years. While the Andoke and Witoto crop system remains adaptive at the individual field level, particularly in its constituent species, its fundamental adaptation is considered to be its integration into the broader field and fallow system that juxtaposes crop production with extended periods of forest regeneration.
