Zebra stripes and tiger stripes: the spatial frequency distribution of the pattern compared to that of the background is significant in display and crypsis

Some striped animals are camouflaged in their natural environment, whereas others are conspicuous. Mammals are known to have spatial frequency analysers in their visual mechanism, and it is suggested that the spatial characteristics of a striped pattern are different in camouflaged and conspicuous animals. Fourier analysis of the stripes of the zebra shows spatial frequencies in the pattern that are unlikely to be present so strongly in their natural background scene. A similar analysis of the camouflaging stripes of a tiger show that the distribution of spatial frequencies are similar to that in the background scene.     

Successional patterns of aquatic macrophytes in Jebba Lake, Nigeria

Macrophyte succession in Jebba Lake, Nigeria, was observed through the first four years after impoundment. Two distinct serai phases, a floating fern phase and a draw-down flora phase could be recognized. The floristic composition of the macrophyte vegetation was also investigated to check earlier predictions (Obot & Mbagwu, 1986) on the probable structure of the macrophyte flora. The failure of obligate floating macrophytes such as Pistia, Azolla and Salvinia to establish in the lake as predicted is discussed. However, rooted emergent macrophytes were observed to be more successful than would be expected from the predictions.     

Genetical and ecological differentiation across a hybrid zone

ABSTRACT.

• 1 There is a narrow hybrid zone between two chromosomal races of the grasshopper Podisma pedestris (L.) in the French Alps.
• 2 There are no gross differences in habitat across the zone, and a multivariate analysis of the vegetation composition detected no significant transition either.
• 3 The hatch and development rates of Podisma in hybrid populations were lower than those found in matched habitat types outside the zone.
• 4 The simplest explanation for the persistence of the parapatric distribution of the two races is that hybrid disadvantage is maintaining a tension zone between them.

     

Conserved intron positions in ancient protein modules

Background  

The timing of the origin of introns is of crucial importance for an understanding of early genome architecture. The Exon theory of genes proposed a role for introns in the formation of multi-exon proteins by exon shuffling and predicts the presence of conserved splice sites in ancient genes. In this study, large-scale analysis of potential conserved splice sites was performed using an intron-exon database (ExInt) derived from GenBank.     

Assortative mating among rock-dwelling cichlid fishes supports high estimates of species richness from Lake Malawi

It has been estimated that Lake Malawi, Africa, contains 500–650 endemic species of cichlid fishes, the largest number of vertebrate species endemic to any comparable sized area on the planet. As many of these putative species cannot be distinguished anatomically, these estimates of species richness depend to a great extent on the assumption that sympatrically occurring male colour morphs represent biological species. We have tested this assumption using a combination of behavioural observations of courtship and microsatellite DNA analysis for six putative species of the Pseudotropheus ( Tropheops ) complex and three of the Pseudotropheus ( Maylandia ) complex occurring sympatrically at Nkhata Bay. We were unable to demonstrate assortative courtship for the species pairs Pseudotropheus ( Maylandia ) zebra / P . 'gold zebra' or P. ( Tropheops ) 'band'/ P. ( T .) 'rust' because we were unable to distinguish between the females of these taxa. All other taxa showed clear assortative courtship, except for P. ( T .) 'deep', a deep-water species which was rarely observed. Fixation indices (θ_ST for the infinite allele model, and R _ST for the stepwise mutation model) calculated from six microsatellite DNA loci demonstrated significant deviations from panmixia in all pairwise comparisons of putative species, indicating little or no gene flow between populations. All taxa showed high levels of allelic diversity providing evidence that genetic bottlenecking may have been of limited importance in the speciation process. Assortative mating among taxa differing only in male colouration is supportive of theories that speciation in these fishes has been driven by sexual selection by female choice.     

CAPACITY BUILDING OF ETHICS REVIEW COMMITTEES ACROSS AFRICA BASED ON THE RESULTS OF A COMPREHENSIVE NEEDS ASSESSMENT SURVEY

A needs assessment survey of ethics review committees (ERCs) across Africa was conducted in order to establish their major needs and areas of weaknesses in terms of ethical review capacity. The response rate was 84% (31 of 37 targeted committees), and committees surveyed were located in 18 African countries. The majority of the responding committees (61%) have been in existence between 5 and 10 years; approximately 74% of the respondents were institutional committees, with the remainder being either national (6/31) or regional (2/31).
In terms of the ethical review process, nine of the 31 committees that responded did not have standard operating procedures (SOPs), and seven of the 22 that did have SOPs had never revised them after their initial development (an average period of three years). Of the 31 committees, 10 operated without any ethical guidelines. Many of the committees (13/30) met once per month, and the number of proposals reviewed annually varied, ranging from five to over 100. All respondents relied on paper-based data management and archiving systems.
Overall, the survey identified the major constraints on ERCs as lack of office equipment, outdated or lack of SOPs, lack of electronic data management systems, inadequate resources, lack of or insufficient expertise on the committees, and poor recognition of the importance of the role of the committees. Consequently, the authors are addressing the identified needs and weaknesses through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded capacity building project. The impact of the intervention project will be assessed during and at the end of the four-year longitudinal project.     

Sepsis progression and outcome: a dynamical model

Background  

Sepsis (bloodstream infection) is the leading cause of death in non-surgical intensive care units. It is diagnosed in 750,000 US patients per annum, and has high mortality. Current understanding of sepsis is predominately observational and correlational, with only a partial and incomplete understanding of the physiological dynamics underlying the syndrome. There exists a need for dynamical models of sepsis progression, based upon basic physiologic principles, which could eventually guide hourly treatment decisions.     

Sex ratio, mating behaviour and Wolbachia infections in a sheetweb spider

The solitary sheetweb spider Pityohyphantes phrygianus has a female-biased primary sex ratio. Earlier studies have indicated that female post-copulatory position may influence the degree of bias, but the adaptive significance of the departure from a Fisherian 1 : 1 sex ratio is not known. In this study we show that there is a significant relationship between abdominal position and offspring sex ratio in undisturbed females. Moreover, female mating behaviour (and thus sex ratio) is correlated with female size, but this relationship may shift from negative to positive depending on the presence of the maternally acquired endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia in both sexes. A survey of wild-caught individuals shows that the incidence of Wolbachia infection in natural populations is high. This indicates that Wolbachia may be a significant factor influencing female post-copulatory behaviour and sex ratio in natural populations.
