The comparability of relative safeties from different studies

It is noted, that unlike relative risk, the corresponding relative safety, viz. the corresponding risk ratio for the complementary endpoint, does not depend on the prevalence of other factors and the magnitudes of the risks associated with them, when risk factors and risks mix independently.     

Regulation of the catalytic activity of the monooxygenase enzyme system depending of the substrate structure and phospholipid composition of the model membrane

A comparative study of pentoxy- and benzyloxyresorufin dealkylation by a monooxygenase enzyme system in dilauroylphosphatidylcholine micelles and in proteoliposomes was carried out. In proteoliposomes whose lipid matrix is formed by double phospholipid mixtures, a cooperative regulation of the oxidation reaction was found. It was shown that the cooperativity of this process depends on the substrate type as well as on the phospholipid composition of the vesicles and decreases during peroxide oxidation of lipids. The results obtained are discussed in terms of protein-protein and protein-phospholipid interactions in the oligomer ensembles consisting of several cytochrome P-450 LM2 molecules.     

Recovery of a marker strain of Escherichia coli from ozonated water by membrane filtration.

Selective and nonselective growth media were evaluated at two incubation temperatures, 35 and 44.5 degrees C, for the recovery of a nalidixic acid-resistant marker strain of Escherichia coli ATCC 11775 by membrane filtration from ozonated 0.05 M phosphate buffer (pH 6.9). There were significantly fewer bacteria recovered with the standard m-FC agar when compared with the same growth medium prepared without bile salts and rosolic acid. This effect was particularly noticeable at the elevated incubation temperature of 44.5 degrees C. These findings are contrary to previous work which concluded that the standard American Public Health Association membrane filtration procedure is suitable for recovery of fecal coliform indicator bacteria from ozonated wastewater.     

The effect of a chemical deterrent, released from the frass of caterpillars of the garden pebble moth, on cabbage root fly oviposition

The cabbage root fly, Delia radicum (L.), was deterred from laying eggs on cauliflower plants that had been sprayed with a suspension of the frass of caterpillars of the garden pebble moth, Evergestis forficalis (L.). Polar extracts of the frass deterred oviposition irrespective of the cruciferous plant species on which the caterpillars had been feeding. Non-polar extracts of the frass had no effect. Spraying plants with macerates from Brassica leaves stimulated fly oviposition whereas spraying plants with macerates from garlic mustard leaves deterred fly oviposition. Macerates from the leaves of all other plants tested had no effect. In field experiments the deterrent effect persisted 2–3 days after leaves were sprayed with frass extracts. Plants infested with feeding caterpillars and contaminated with only a few discrete frass pellets were as deterrent to the fly as those sprayed with frass suspensions.

Résumé D. radicum a évité de pondre sur des pieds de chou-fleur, qui avaient été pulvérisés avec une suspension d'excréments d'E. forficalis. Les extraits polaires de ces excréments empêchent la ponte quelle que soit l'espère de crucifère sur laquelle les chenilles se sont alimentées. Les extraits non polares sont sans effet. Dans la nature, l'action dissuadante persiste 2 à 3 jours après la pulvérisation des feuilles avec les extraits d'excréments. La pulvérisation tous les deux jours a maintenu l'action dissuadante. Des plantes contaminées par des chenilles en train de s'alimenter et souillées par quelques crottes sont aussi dissuadantes pour la mouche que celles pulvérisées avec une suspension d'excréments.

     

Taxonomic significance of differences in DNA methylation within the 'Mycoplasma mycoides cluster' detected with restriction endonucleases MboI and DpnI

DNA from 22 strains belonging to the ' Mycoplasma mycoides cluster' was tested for methylation of adenine in GATC sequences by its resistance or susceptibility to digestion by the restriction endonucleases MboI , which is inhibited by the methylation, or DpnI , which requires the methylation. Strains of bovine serogroup 7, M. mycoides subsp. mycoides SC, and some M. mycoides subsp. capri strains plus M. capricolum strain Cal Kid lacked the methylation, whereas other strains of M. mycoides subsp. capri and of M. capricolum , plus the F38-like and M. mycoides subsp. mycoides LC strains, possessed it. We conclude that this simple test could provide a valuable criterion in identifying these mycoplamas.     

Comparative inactivation of poliovirus type 3 and MS2 coliphage in demand-free phosphate buffer by using ozone.

MS2 coliphage (ATCC 15597-B1) has been proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a surrogate for enteric viruses to determine the engineering requirements of chemical disinfection systems on the basis of previous experience with chlorine. The objective of this study was to determine whether MS2 coliphage was a suitable indicator for the inactivation of enteric viruses when ozone disinfection systems were used. Bench-scale experiments were conducted in 2-liter-batch shrinking reactors containing ozone demand-free 0.05 M phosphate buffer (pH 6.9) at 22 degrees C. Ozone was added as a side stream from a concentrated stock solution. It was found that an ozone residual of less than 40 micrograms/liter at the end of 20 s inactivated greater than 99.99% of MS2 coliphage in the demand-free buffer. When MS2 was compared directly with poliovirus type 3 in paired experiments, 1.6 log units more inactivation was observed with MS2 coliphage than with poliovirus type 3. It was concluded that the use of MS2 coliphage as a surrogate organism for studies of enteric virus with ozone disinfection systems overestimated the inactivation of enteric viruses. It is recommended that the regulatory agencies evaluate their recommendations for using MS2 coliphage as an indicator of enteric viruses.
