We reviewed 2524 articles published from 1987 to 1995 in five international journals, Conservation Biology , Biological Conservation , Biodiversity and Conservation , Ecological Applications , and the Journal of Applied Ecology , to assess patterns and imbalances in biodiversity research in the following subject areas: locations where research was conducted, types of organisms studied, types of ecosystems studied, types of methodologies used, and types of stresses investigated. Biodiversity research was found to be narrowly focused with little deviation from its initial course set of being a discipline concerned largely with the implications of forest habitat loss on charismatic terrestrial megafauna; i.e. the 'founder effect' is very much in evidence. The 'sleeping dragon' of ignored marine biodiversity is really symptomatic of a wider problem, and can perhaps be referred to as a 'hibernating hydra' of many imbalances due to, for example, under-representations of research from developing nations, or on amphibians and invertebrates, alpine and arctic systems, sociological components and chemical stresses etc. It is time to take steps to actively awaken the creature so that conservation biology/applied ecology can become more pluralistic in scope.  相似文献

In tropical areas, Dynamic Global Vegetation Models (DGVMs) still have deficiencies in simulating the timing of vegetation phenology. To start addressing this problem, standard Fourier‐based methods are applied to aerosol screened monthly remotely sensed phenology time series (Enhanced Vegetation Index, EVI) and two major driving factors of phenology: solar radiation and precipitation (for March 2000 through December 2006 over northern South America). At 1 × 1 km scale using, power (or variance) spectra on good quality aerosol screened time series, annual cycles in EVI are detected across 58.24% of the study area, the strongest (largest amplitude) occurring in the savanna. Terra Firme forest have weak but significant annual cycles in comparison with savannas because of the heterogeneity of vegetation and nonsynchronous phenological events within 1 × 1 km scale pixels. Significant annual cycles for radiation and precipitation account for 86% and 90% of the region, respectively, with different spatial patterns to phenology. Cross‐spectral analysis was used to compare separately radiation with phenology/EVI, precipitation with phenology/EVI and radiation with precipitation. Overall the majority of the Terra Firme forest appears to have radiation as the driver of phenology (either radiation is in phase or leading phenology/EVI at the annual scale). These results are in agreement with previous research, although in Acre, central and eastern Peru and northern Bolivia there is a coexistence of ‘in phase’ precipitation over Terra Firme forest. In contrast in most areas of savanna precipitation appears to be a driver and savanna areas experiencing an inverse (antiphase) relationship between radiation and phenology is consistent with inhibited grassland growth due to soil moisture limitation. The resulting maps provide a better spatial understanding of phenology–driver relationships offering a bench mark to parameterize ecological models.  相似文献

1. Although marine research has indicated that metabolic fractionations of 13C due to differences in organismal trophic position and proximal composition can complicate the isotopic interpretation of energy flow pathways, such potentially confounding problems have never been examined in freshwater benthic food webs.
2. The δ13C values of animals comprising a littoral benthic food web composited from four Canadian Shield lakes showed no relationship with either individual trophic position (δ15N) or lipid content (C/N ratios).
3. Differences in the relative incorporation of autochthonous and allochthonous energy sources by freshwater benthic organisms will alter their δ13C and δ15N values, thereby masking any possibility of observing 13C trophic enrichment.
4. Removal of the possibly confounding influences of lipids through either empirical correction or by analytical extraction may be unnecessary in studies of freshwater benthic food webs. Likewise, a priori adjustments in δ13C for freshwater benthic organisms in order to accommodate trophic fractionations which are presumed to occur, based on data from marine offshore food webs, may also be inappropriate.  相似文献

The importance of evaluating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from dairy cows within the whole farm setting is being realized as more important than evaluating these emissions in isolation. Current whole farm models aimed at evaluating GHG emissions make use of simple regression equations to predict enteric methane (CH4) production. The objective of the current paper is to evaluate the performance of nine CH4 prediction equations that are currently being used in whole farm GHG models. Data used to evaluate the prediction equations came from a collection of individual (IND) and treatment averaged (TRT) data. Equations were compared based on mean square prediction error (MSPE) and concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) analysis. In general, predictions were poor, with root MSPE (as a percentage of observed mean) values ranging from 20.2 to 52.5 for the IND database and from 24.0 to 38.2 for the TRT database and CCC values ranging from 0.009 to 0.493 for the IND database and from 0.000 to 0.271 for the TRT database. Overall, the equations of Moe & Tyrrell and IPCC Tier II performed best on the IND dataset, and the equations of Moe & Tyrrell and Kirchgeßner et al., performed best on the TRT dataset. Results show that the simple more generalized equations performed worse than those that attempted to represent important aspects of diet composition, but in general significant amounts of bias and deviation of the regression slope from unity existed for all equations. The low prediction accuracy of CH4 equations in whole farm models may introduce substantial error into inventories of GHG emissions and lead to incorrect mitigation recommendations.  相似文献

A modified Gompertz model was derived to describe the fractional decline in green area of wheat flag leaves in field experiments where green leaf area at time t=100exp[‐exp(‐k(t‐m))]. Curves fitted over time to visual assessments of green leaf area (% of total leaf area) throughout flag leaf life accounted for more than 98% of variation in 45 of 48 wheat cultivar × fungicide treatment (+/?) comparisons. This data set spanned 17 yr and therefore included cultivars of contrasting parentage and age. In the absence of fungicide, green leaf area decline was associated with drought or infection with a number of foliar pathogens including Septoria tritici (sexual stage Mycospherella graminicola), Erysiphe graminis and Puccinia striiformis. Fungicides applied to the flag leaf included propiconazole, propiconazole plus tridemorph, flusilazole or azoxystrobin. Fungicide effects on m (i.e. time to 37% green area) were closely related to fungicide effects (% of untreated) on mean grain weight (variation accounted for (VAF) = 80%) and grain yield (VAF = 85%).  相似文献

1. Phytophagous insects frequently manipulate their host‐plant to improve their immediate environment. This generally implies substantial modifications of host metabolism, and sometimes an alteration of nitrogen allocation within the host‐plant. However, the outcome of plant manipulation on amino acid or protein content can be modulated by environmental factors and host‐plant traits. 2. It was investigated whether the pseudogall induced by the aphid Phloeomyzus passerinii (Signoret) (Aphididae: Phloeomyzinae) in the bark of its host‐plant affects the amino acid content in bark tissues, and whether the strength of the modification is modulated by the fertilisation regime and/or the resistance level of the host‐plant. The development of aphid colonies on a resistant and a susceptible poplar genotype, under three fertilisation regimes, was studied. After the development of colonies, the free and protein‐bound amino acid content of the infested bark were quantified. 3. Fertilisation enhanced poplar growth and increased the free amino acid content of bark tissues. Infestation also triggered accumulations of both free and protein‐bound amino acids in the feeding sites, but in the susceptible genotype only. The increase in amino acid content was more pronounced when fertilisation was low, and fertilisation did not enhance aphid development. 4. In conclusion, infestation by P. passerinii triggers an accumulation of amino acids, but the effect is influenced by both the fertilisation regime and the resistance level of the host‐plant. This suggests that P. passerinii could affect the allocation of nutrients within trees during outbreaks.  相似文献

Wildfires have major effects on forest dynamics, succession and the carbon cycle in the boreal biome. They are a significant source of carbon emissions, and current observed changes in wildfire regimes due to changes in climate could affect the balance of the boreal carbon pool. A better understanding of postwildfire vegetation dynamics in boreal forests will help predict the future role of boreal forests as a carbon sink or source. Time series of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Shortwave Infrared Index (NDSWIR) derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite were used to investigate whether characteristic temporal patterns exist for stands of different ages in the Siberian boreal forests and whether their postwildfire dynamics are influenced by variables such as prewildfire vegetation cover. Two types of forests, evergreen needle‐leaf (ENF) and deciduous needle‐leaf (DNF), were studied by analysing a sample of 78 burned forest areas. In order to study a longer time frame, a chronosequence of burned areas of different ages was built by coupling information on location and age provided by a forest burned area database (from 1992 to 2003) to MODIS NDVI and NDSWIR time series acquired from 2001 to 2005. For each of the burned areas, an adjacent unburned control plot representing the same forest type was selected, with the aim of separating the interannual variations caused by climate from changes in NDVI and NDSWIR behaviour due to a wildfire. The results suggest that it takes more than 13 years for the temporal NDVI and NDSWIR signal to recover fully after wildfire. NDSWIR, which is associated to canopy moisture, needs a longer recovery period than NDVI, which is associated to vegetation greenness. The results also suggest that variability observed in postwildfire NDVI and NDSWIR can be explained partially by the dominant forest type: while 13 years after a fire NDVI and NDSWIR are similar for ENF and DNF, the initial impact appears to be greater on the NDVI and NDSWIR of ENF, suggesting a faster recovery by ENF.  相似文献

  • 1 Microprofiles of oxygen concentration were made in soft sediments of Lake Baikal, along three transects near the Selenga delta. This is the first time the available oxygen in the sediment has been measured in this lake.
  • 2 The microprofiles had a similar and typical shape (a single exception was possibly caused by bioturbation). A positive correlation was found between the sediment oxygen penetration depth (SOP) and the bathymetric depth of the epilimnion, probably caused by a decrease in oxygen sediment consumption with increasing depth.
  • 3 The observed SOP values are generally very high, which is an indication of oligotrophy. A single low SOP value, observed in the northern transect, appears to be linked to organic pollution caused by the Selenga River.
