Depression treatment patterns among women veterans with cardiovascular conditions or diabetes

The study aimed to examine treatment patterns for depression among women veterans diagnosed with cardiovascular conditions or diabetes. We used longitudinal data from the 2002-2003 merged Veteran Health Administration (VHA) and Medicare files. Chi-square tests and multinomial logistic regression were performed to analyse depression treatment among veteran women with incident depressive episode and one of the following chronic conditions: diabetes or coronary artery disease or hypertension. Overall, 77% received treatment for depression, 54% with only antidepressants, 4% with only psychotherapy, and 19% with both. Multinomial logistic regression revealed that African American women were more likely to be in the no treatment group and were more likely than white women to receive psychotherapy rather than antidepressants. Older women and women with coronary artery disease only were less likely to receive treatment.     

Surface nitrogen and plankton in Skaha Lake, British Columbia (Canada)

This study (1970–71) of an oligotrophic lake subject to cultural enrichment indicates the presence of complex interrelations between plankton and nitrogen levels in surface waters. Generally inorganic nitrogen was high in the winter (0.4–0.5 ppm) and Iow in summer (less than 0-1 ppm). However, in late July and August a large increase in nitrogen (1.5 ppm) was recorded. This correlated with the Gloeotrichia echinulata J. E. Smith ex P. Richt. bloom (Cyanophyceae) and the increase in nitrogen fixation, or nitrogenase activity (measured as acetylene reduction). It was calculated that the cyanophyte bloom could have contributed a minimum of 2350 kg nitrogen to the lake in August 1970 which is c. 62% of the nitrate-nitrogen occurring at any time.     

Characterization of microsatellite loci isolated in trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator)

Primers for 16 microsatellite loci were developed for the trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator), a species recovering from a recent population bottleneck. In a screen of 158 individuals, the 16 loci were found to have levels of variability ranging from two to seven alleles. No loci were found to be linked, although two loci repeatedly revealed significant departures from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. Amplification in the closely related tundra swan (Cygnus columbianus) was successful for all except one locus. These microsatellite loci will be applicable for population genetic analyses and ultimately aid in management efforts.     

Cancer of the liver; needle biopsy as a means of detection

Needle biopsy of the liver was done in 25 patients suspected of having hepatic cancer. The results of biopsy were "positive" in 19 cases, and cancer later was proven to be absent in the livers of four of the other six. Multiple biopsy increased the incidence of positive findings. The procedure obviously provides no false-positive tests. It is recommended for the detection of hepatic neoplasm in patients who would otherwise require surgical exploration for diagnosis.
