The addition of starch or skim milk to bovine serum albumin-containing regeneration medium enhances the regeneration of both Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and B. subtilis protoplasts. With B. amyloliquefaciens starch could replace bovine serum albumin; with B. subtilis either starch or skim milk could be used instead of bovine serum albumin. The maximum regeneration frequency achieved was 10% with B. amyloliquefaciens and 290% with B. subtilis . 相似文献

Macrophyte succession in Jebba Lake, Nigeria, was observed through the first four years after impoundment. Two distinct serai phases, a floating fern phase and a draw-down flora phase could be recognized. The floristic composition of the macrophyte vegetation was also investigated to check earlier predictions (Obot & Mbagwu, 1986) on the probable structure of the macrophyte flora. The failure of obligate floating macrophytes such as Pistia, Azolla and Salvinia to establish in the lake as predicted is discussed. The new stick insect family Gallophasmatidae, based on Gallophasma longipalpis gen. et sp.n. , from the Earliest Eocene French amber has a pattern of tegmina venation typical of Archaeorthoptera, also present in at least some Mesozoic ‘Phasmatodea’. On the other hand, Gallophasma displays in its body anatomy some apomorphies of the extant Euphasmatodea, e.g. fusion of metatergum and abdominal tergum 1, correlated with the reduction of abdominal sternum 1 to lateral triangular sclerites. A unique autapomorphy of Gallophasma is the presence of annulated and apparently multi‐segmented or pseudo‐segmented cerci; all other Phasmatodea have one‐segmented cerci. The venation of the tegmina of Gallophasma differs from that of extant winged Phasmatodea in the plesiomorphic absence of a knob‐like dorsal eversion. This and other differences in the wing venation between extant and extinct Phasmatodea might have been caused by the loss of wings at some point in the evolutionary history of the order and their secondary gain in a subclade of the extant phasmids. 相似文献

The evolution of dispersal rate is studied with a model of several local populations linked by dispersal. Three dispersal
strategies are considered where all, half or none of the offspring disperse. The spatial scale (number of patches) and the
temporal scale (probability of local extinction) of the environment are critical in determining the selective advantage of
the different dispersal strategies. The results from the simulations suggest that an interaction between group selection and
individual selection results in a different outcome in relation to the spatial and temporal scales of the environment. Such
an interaction is able to maintain a polymorphism in dispersal strategies. The maintenance of this polymorphism is also scale-dependent.
This study suggests a mechanism for the short-term evolution of dispersal, and provides a testable prediction of this hypothesis,
namely that loss of dispersal abilities should be more frequent in spatially more continuous environments, or in temporally
more stable environments.

Burkholderia has only recently been recognized as a potential nitrogen-fixing symbiont of legumes, but we find that the origins of symbiosis in Burkholderia are much deeper than previously suspected. We sampled 143 symbionts from 47 native species of Mimosa across 1800 km in central Brazil and found that 98% were Burkholderia . Gene sequences defined seven distinct and divergent species complexes within the genus Burkholderia . The symbiosis-related genes formed deep Burkholderia -specific clades, each specific to a species complex, implying that these genes diverged over a long period within Burkholderia without substantial horizontal gene transfer between species complexes. 相似文献

Elevated levels of interleukin-1 (IL-1) have been shown to amplify the inflammatory response against periodontopathogenic bacteria. In humans, polymorphisms in the IL1A and IL1B genes are the most well-studied genetic polymorphisms associated with periodontal disease (PD). In contrast to human, there is a lack of knowledge on the genetic basis of canine PD. A case–control study was conducted in which a molecular analysis of dog IL1A and IL1B genes was performed. Of the eight genetic variants identified, seven in IL1A gene and one in IL1B gene, IL1A/1_g.388A >C and IL1A/1_g.521T >A showed statistically significant differences between groups (adjusted OR (95% CI): 0.15 (0.03–0.76), P= 0.022; 5.76 (1.03–32.1), P= 0.046, respectively). It suggests that in the studied population the IL1A/1_g.388C allele is associated with a decreased PD risk, whereas the IL1A/1_g.521A allele can confer an increased risk. Additionally, the IL1A/2_g.515G >T variation resulted in a change of amino acid, i.e. glycine to valine. In silico analysis suggests that this change can alter protein structure and function, predicting it to be deleterious or damaging. This work suggests that IL1 genetic variants may be important in PD susceptibility in canines. 相似文献
