Evolution and Diversification of Antarctic Notothenioid Fishes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Antarctica supported fossil ichthyofaunas during the Devonian,Jurassic, Cretaceous and Eocene/Oligocene. These faunas arenot ancestral to each other, nor are they related to any componentof the modern fauna. About one hundred species of notothenioidsdominate a modern fauna of over 200 species of bottom fishes. This highly endemic perciform suborder is not representedinthe fossil record of Antarctica. Notothenioids may have evolvedin situ on the margins of the Antarctic continent while graduallyadapting to cooling conditions during the Tertiary. Cladisticstudies indicate that notothenioids are a monophyletic group, but a sister group has not been identified among perciform fishes. With relatively few non-notothenioid fishes in Antarctic waters, notothenioids fill ecological roles normally occupied by taxonomicallydiverse fishes in temperate waters. There are six notothenioidfamilies: Bovichtidae, Nototheniidae, Harpagiferidae, Artedidraconidae,Bathydraconidae and Channichthyidae. Aspects of theirbiologyare briefly considered with emphasis on the Nototheniidae, themost speciose family. Evolutionary diversification within thisfamily allows recognition of species which are pelagic, cryopelagic, benthopelagic and benthic.  相似文献

This paper was presented before a meeting of plaintiffs' attorneys, including those who specialize in malpractice actions against physicians-the National Association of Claimants' Compensation Attorneys (NACCA). Doctor Eastman is known internationally for his contribution in the field of obstetrics. In recent years his interests have led him into the field of forensic obstetrics, a complex and difficult subject. Some of these problems are explored by Dr. Eastman in this paper and his comments will be of interest to physicians and attorneys. It is to be hoped that NACCA members benefited by this accurate and scientific presentation.  相似文献

The floral anatomy and pollen morphology of Corsia are described in the context of its systematic relationships. Flowers of Corsia are epigynous, lack septal nectaries and possess a large labellum formed from the outer median tepal (sepal). The labellum is highly vascularized and has a prominent outgrowth (callus) that is apparently nectiiferous in some species of section Sessilis , although not in section Unguiculatis . The six fertile stamens are proximally fused to the style, forming a gynostemium. This combination of labellum and gynostemium is otherwise found only in Orchidaceae (Asparagales), but the orchid labellum is formed from the opposite median inner tepal, and is therefore not homologous with that of Corsia . The three genera of Corsiaceae ( Corsia , Arachnitis and Corsiopsis ) are markedly different in some respects; e.g. only Corsia has a gynostemium. However, they share a unique synapomorphy in the presence of a labellum formed from the outer median tepal (sepal). Corsia and Arachnitis are also similar in pollen sexine sculpturing. Among other putative relatives, the range of morphological similarities between Corsia and Campynemataceae (Liliales) tends to support recent preliminary inferences from molecular data that they are closely related, but a relationship with Thismia (Dioscoreales) cannot be discounted. Both Campynemataceae and Thismia share similarities with Corsia , including epigyny, absence of septal nectaries, presence of tepal nectaries, and pollen morphology. © 2002 Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 138 , 315–324.  相似文献

Nuclear volumes and cell areas were determined for seven regionsof the meristem of roots of Zea mays. Roots were fixed in 10per cent neutral buffered formalin, in 3 per cent glutaraldehydeor in acetic acid/alcohol; they were prepared as sections oralls were teased apart. Mean volumes of interphase nuclei weresimilar in all regions of the root except the vascular tissueof the stele. Mean nuclear volumes and the overall range ofvolumes were similar in sub-populations of cells with differentproportions of G1, S and G2 cells, e.g. in row I of root capinitials, whose cells lack a G1 phase, and in quiescent centrecells, which are mainly in G1. Nuclear volume does not appearto be closely correlated with DNA content. Nuclear volumes covereda 6 to 12-fold range within a meristem and even within specificregions, in which cells are part of the same cell lineages, there was a 4- to 9-fold range. Nuclear volumes were comparedin sister cells in rows I and II of the root cap initials. In10 per cent of the pairs, sister nuclei had identical volumes;the other pain had different volumes and mean difference was68 µm3. Mechanisms by which this variability could begenerated are discussed, particularly asymmetry, at mitoses,of factors that regulate nuclear growth. The aster leafhopper (Macrosteles fascifrons), injected with an isolate of Spiroplasma citri obtained from brittle root-diseased horseradish (Armoracia rusticana), transmitted the spiroplasma to horseradish and China aster (Callistephus chinensis.) After feeding on plants infected with S. citri, M. fascifrons transmitted the spiroplasma from aster to aster and horseradish, from yellow rocket (Barbarea vulgaris) to aster, and from turnip (Brassica rapa) to turnip. Symptoms in infected horseradish were chlorosis and stunting of newly formed leaves, discoloration of root phloem, and reduced plant growth typical of brittle root disease. Chlorosis, stunting, and asymmetry of young leaves occurred in affected aster and turnip. Flowers of infected aster were small and pale in colour and occasionally showed other symptoms including asymmetry, petal distortion, or light green petals. Spiroplasmas were isolated from all plants showing symptoms. Transmission rates by M. fascifrons which acquired S. citri by feeding on infected plants were very low, but injected leafhoppers transmitted more frequently. This is the first report of the transmission of S. citri from diseased to healthy plants by M. fascifrons.  相似文献

Ecological opportunity – through entry into a new environment, the origin of a key innovation or extinction of antagonists – is widely thought to link ecological population dynamics to evolutionary diversification. The population‐level processes arising from ecological opportunity are well documented under the concept of ecological release. However, there is little consensus as to how these processes promote phenotypic diversification, rapid speciation and adaptive radiation. We propose that ecological opportunity could promote adaptive radiation by generating specific changes to the selective regimes acting on natural populations, both by relaxing effective stabilizing selection and by creating conditions that ultimately generate diversifying selection. We assess theoretical and empirical evidence for these effects of ecological opportunity and review emerging phylogenetic approaches that attempt to detect the signature of ecological opportunity across geological time. Finally, we evaluate the evidence for the evolutionary effects of ecological opportunity in the diversification of Caribbean Anolis lizards. Some of the processes that could link ecological opportunity to adaptive radiation are well documented, but others remain unsupported. We suggest that more study is required to characterize the form of natural selection acting on natural populations and to better describe the relationship between ecological opportunity and speciation rates.  相似文献
