We observed changes with time in the patterns of characteristic fluke markings used to identify sperm whales. Changes were categorized as minor, moderate, or major based on their severity. These change types were found to occur at rates of 0.9%, 11.8%, and 1.3% per individual per year, respectively. Gain and loss rates for each of seven different mark types were also calculated. The highest estimated rate was the gain of small nicks at 0.08 per individual per year. Most individuals identified by us possess at least a few characteristic marks and, therefore, changes of the type observed in this study are unlikely to severely affect their recognizability. For all but one mark type, gain rates were higher than loss rates, indicating that individuals may be accumulating marks with age. Over long periods this could eventually make individuals unrecognizable, with the result that population sizes calculated from these data may be overestimated. As long as photoidentification studies are conducted sufficiently often, and these changes are as gradual as they appear to be, this problem should be minimal. 相似文献

DNA damage activates cell cycle checkpoints that prevent progression through the cell cycle. In yeast, the DNA damage checkpoint response is regulated by a series of genes that have mammalian homologs, including rad1, rad9, hus1, and rad17. On the basis of sequence homology, yeast and human Rad1, Rad9, and Hus1 protein homologs are predicted to structurally resemble the sliding clamp PCNA. Likewise, Rad17 homologs have extensive homology with replication factor C (RFC) subunits (p36, p37, p38, p40, and p140), which form a clamp loader for PCNA. These observations predict that Rad1, Hus1, and Rad9 might interact with Rad17 as a clamp-clamp loader pair during the DNA damage response. In this report, we demonstrate that endogenous human Rad17 (hRad17) interacts with the PCNA-related checkpoint proteins hRad1, hRad9, and hHus1. Mutational analysis of hRad1 and hRad17 demonstrates that this interaction has properties similar to the interaction between RFC and PCNA, a well characterized clamp-clamp loader pair. Moreover, we show that DNA damage affects the association of hRad17 with the clamp-like checkpoint proteins. Collectively, these data provide the first experimental evidence that hRad17 interacts with the PCNA-like proteins hRad1, hHus1, and hRad9 in manner similar to the interaction between RFC and PCNA. 相似文献

Non-geographically based population structure of South Pacific sperm whales: dialects, fluke-markings and genetics 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

1. This study addresses the issue of structure in sperm whale ( Physeter macrocephalus Linnaeus) populations and whether it is geographically based.
2. During a survey around the South Pacific Ocean, we collected sloughed skin for genetic analyses, recorded coda vocalizations, and photographed fluke markings.
3. Groups of female and immature sperm whales had characteristic mitochondrial haplotypes, coda repertoires, and fluke-mark patterns, but there was no clear geographical structure in any of these attributes.
4. However, similarities of coda repertoire and mitochondrial haplotype distribution were significantly correlated among pairs of groups in a manner that was not geographically based. There was also a significant canonical correlation coefficient between coda repertoire and fluke-mark patterns.
5. These results suggest that attributes (such as vocal repertoire and techniques of predator defence) which are acquired matrilineally, and probably culturally, are conserved during the fission and dispersal of groups. 相似文献

Manipulative studies have demonstrated that ocean acidification (OA) is a threat to coral reefs, yet no experiments have employed diurnal variations in pCO(2) that are ecologically relevant to many shallow reefs. Two experiments were conducted to test the response of coral recruits (less than 6 days old) to diurnally oscillating pCO(2); one exposing recruits for 3 days to ambient (440 μatm), high (663 μatm) and diurnally oscillating pCO(2) on a natural phase (420-596 μatm), and another exposing recruits for 6 days to ambient (456 μatm), high (837 μatm) and diurnally oscillating pCO(2) on either a natural or a reverse phase (448-845 μatm). In experiment I, recruits exposed to natural-phased diurnally oscillating pCO(2) grew 6-19% larger than those in ambient or high pCO(2). In experiment II, recruits in both high and natural-phased diurnally oscillating pCO(2) grew 16 per cent larger than those at ambient pCO(2), and this was accompanied by 13-18% higher survivorship; the stimulatory effect on growth of oscillatory pCO(2) was diminished by administering high pCO(2) during the day (i.e. reverse-phased). These results demonstrate that coral recruits can benefit from ecologically relevant fluctuations in pCO(2) and we hypothesize that the mechanism underlying this response is highly pCO(2)-mediated, night-time storage of dissolved inorganic carbon that fuels daytime calcification. 相似文献

In vivo increased sensitivity to heparin has been demonstrated in patients following an acute myocardial infarction. An intravenous injection of 10,000 units of heparin was given to each of 18 patients with recent myocardial infarction in order to compare them with 17 patients who were not suffering from any acute illness. The changes in whole blood clotting time, recalcified plasma clotting time and prothrombin time were greater and more prolonged in the patients with recent myocardial infarction. Of the three tests, the one-stage prothrombin time provided the simplest and the most precise measurement of heparin sensitivity. The reason for this was not clear: it is possible that it is related to shock and congestive heart failure which were complications of the clinical course following myocardial infarction. 相似文献

Background
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) and PTH-related peptide (PTHrP) belong to a family of endocrine factors that share a highly conserved N-terminal region (amino acids 1-34) and play key roles in calcium homeostasis, bone formation and skeletal development. Recently, PTH-like peptide (PTH-L) was identified in teleost fish raising questions about the evolution of these proteins. Although PTH and PTHrP have been intensively studied in mammals their function in other vertebrates is poorly documented. Amphibians and birds occupy unique phylogenetic positions, the former at the transition of aquatic to terrestrial life and the latter at the transition to homeothermy. Moreover, both organisms have characteristics indicative of a complex system in calcium regulation. This study investigated PTH family evolution in vertebrates with special emphasis on Xenopus and chicken. 相似文献8.
