Systemic Induction of Resistance in Potato Plants Against Phytophthora infestans by Local Treatment with Hyphal Wall Components of the Fungus

Potato plants (cv.‘Irish Cobbler’ with no major resistance genes to Phytophthora infestans), the lower or upper leaves of which were previously treated with hyphal wall components (HWC) of the fungus by rubbing with carborundum, acquired an induced resistance in other untreated leaves against cultivar-pathogenic races of P. infestans when challenged by spraying with a zoospore suspension. Such induced resistance was significantly shown to exist from at least 1 to 20 days after induction treatment with HWC. Thus, the treated plants were protected from severe late blight disease while non-induced control plants finally died of the disease. The induced resistance was due to a reduction of the number of successfully germinating zoospores, and subsequent penetration and then occurrence of hypersensitive-like cell response to the penetrating organisms. These results suggested that local leaf tissues of potato plants reacting to HWC may provide some systemic information that activates or enhances some resistance to P. infestans.     

Induction of 3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA Reductase in Potato Tubers after Slicing, Fungal Infection or Chemical Treatment, and Some Properties of the Enzyme

Intact tubers of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Irish Cobblerand an interspecific hybrid between S. tuberosum and S. demissumcv. Rishiri) contain a very low activity of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl(HMG)-CoA reductase. The activity increased first in responseto slicing, and again in response to additional treatments suchas inoculation with an incompatible race of Phytophthora infestans,application of a hyphal wall component of the fungus or HgCl₂solution, and then decreased. Both the first and the secondincreases in activity in response to slicing and additionaltreatment with a hyphal wall component to elicit phytoalexinproduction were inhibited by blasticidin S. Nitric Oxide Induces Phytoalexin Accumulation in Potato Tuber Tissues

We investigated whether nitric oxide (NO) radical could inducephytoalexin production. Treatment of potato tuber tissues with1-hydroxy-2-oxo-3,3-bis(2-aminoethyl)-1-triazene (NOC-18), anNO-releasing compound, induced the accumulation of the potatophytoalexin rishitin. This induction was inhibited by carboxy-2-phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide(carboxy-PTIO), an NO-specific scavenger, or by Tiron, a radicalscavenger, suggesting a phytoalexin inducing activity for NO. Effect of neurotensin on pancreatic function in man

The effect of neurotensin on submaximally-stimulated hepatobiliary and pancreatic secretion was studied in 6 healthy subjects. An intravenous infusion of neurotensin 1.4 ± 0.3 pmol/kg/min, designed to reproduce plasma neurotensin immunoreactivity levels within the physiological range, produced a significant increase in pancreatic bicarbonate output. Plasma concentrations of pancreatic polypeptide rose by 83 ± 16 pmol/l and were associated with a small reduction in trypsin, but no significant change in bilirubin outputs.     

Adsorption thermodynamics to clean up wastewater; critical review

The current review paper deals with critical evaluation of the thermodynamic parameters of adsorption equilibrium uptakes of heavy metals, dyes and other organic pollutants from the wastewater using low-cost adsorbents, activated carbon derived from agricultural waste, industrial wastes and other important adsorbent materials. Present review paper focus the spontaneity of adsorption processes when the thermodynamic parameters were assessed with the compensation effects of standard enthalpy change (ΔH^o) and standard entropy change (ΔS^o) with temperature. This paper also investigates the spontaneity of adsorption on the basis of thermodynamic criteria of spontaneity and the temperature range to predict feasibility of the adsorption processes.     

Effect of Metalaxyl on the incidence and severity of Pearl millet downy mildew disease in Northern Nigeria

Pearl millet downy mildew (DM) incidence, severity and yield losses of two pearl millet varieties (local and improved) due to the disease were determined in the field. Significant differences in the disease incidence and severity were recorded in the plots sown with metalaxyl-treated seeds and those sown with non-treated seeds, indicating the efficacy of the fungicide on the fungus. Yield losses due to non-treatment of seeds with metalaxyl was 40.88 and 45.39% in a local variety and 43.00 and 18.60% in an improved variety in the 2000 and 2001 cropping seasons respectively. Significant differences between plots sown with metalaxyl-treated and those sown with non-treated seeds were obtained for other yield components such as 1000-grains weight, panicle length and weight.
