Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was used tostudy variation among and within selectedIxora (Rubiaceae) populationsand mutants. Six populations of I. congesta yielded identicalbanding patterns suggesting genetic uniformity of this species.However, six populations of I. coccinea varieties (three red-flowered,two yellow-flowered and one red-flowered wild-type) exhibitedinfraspecific differences in RAPD profiles. Small and largeleaves of an atavistic mutant cultivar of I. coccinea were alsosubjected to RAPD analysis. An extra band was amplified in thelarge leaves that was absent in small leaves, suggesting thatthe phenotypic alteration in this taxon is due to genetic mutationrather than epigenetic changes. Similarly, an extra band wasdetected in the white sectors of I. Variegated compared to thegreen sectors, suggesting that the shoot apical meristems ofthis cultivar exist as a genetic chimera. Bench testing is a useful method to characterize the response of different automatic positive airway pressure (APAP) devices under well-controlled conditions. However, previous models did not consider the diversity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients’ characteristics and phenotypes. The objective of this proof-of-concept study was to design a new bench test for realistically simulating an OSA patient’s night, and to implement a one-night example of a typical female phenotype for comparing responses to several currently-available APAP devices. We developed a novel approach aimed at replicating a typical night of sleep which includes different disturbed breathing events, disease severities, sleep/wake phases, body postures and respiratory artefacts. The simulated female OSA patient example that we implemented included periods of wake, light sleep and deep sleep with positional changes and was connected to ten different APAP devices. Flow and pressure readings were recorded; each device was tested twice. The new approach for simulating female OSA patients effectively combined a wide variety of disturbed breathing patterns to mimic the response of a predefined patient type. There were marked differences in response between devices; only three were able to overcome flow limitation to normalize breathing, and only five devices were associated with a residual apnea-hypopnea index of <5/h. In conclusion, bench tests can be designed to simulate specific patient characteristics, and typical stages of sleep, body position, and wake. Each APAP device behaved differently when exposed to this controlled model of a female OSA patient, and should lead to further understanding of OSA treatment. 相似文献

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers are used to estimate interspecific variation among mangrove and non-mangrove Heritiera fomes, H. littoralis and H. macrophylla. All the species have 2n = 38 chromosomes, with minute structural changes distinguishing the karyotype of each species. Significant variation of 4C DNA content occurs at the interspecific level. Interspecific polymorphism ranged from 14.09% between H. fomes and H. littoralis to 52.73% between H. fomes and H. macrophylla. H. macrophylla showed wide polymorphism in the RAPD marker with H. littoralis (51.23%) and H. fomes (52.73%). Two distinct RAPD products obtained from OPA-10 (1000 bp) and OPD-15 (900 bp) found characteristic molecular markers in H. macrophylla , a species from a non-mangrove habitat. H. macrophylla was more distantly related to H. fomes [genetic distance (1-F) = 0.305] than to H. littoralis [genetic distance (1-F) = 0.273]. H. littoralis was of a closer affinity to H. fomes [genetic distance (1-F) = 0.218] than to H. macrophylla. 相似文献

Two statistics are proposed for testing the hypothesis of equality of the means of a bivariate normal distribution with unknown common variance and correlation coefficient when observations are missing on both variates. One of the statistics reduces to the one proposed by Bhoj (1978, 1984) when the unpaired observations on the variates are equal. The distributions of the statistics are approximated by well known distributions under the null hypothesis. The empirical powers of the tests are computed and compared with those of some known statistics. The comparison supports the use of one of the statistics proposed in this paper. 相似文献

Rhizoctonia solani anastomosis group (AG) 11 causes serious damping‐off and hypocotyl rot of narrow‐leafed lupins (Lupinus angustifolius) in the northern grain‐belt of Western Australia. R. solani AG‐11 produced abundant sclerotia in sand overlaid on potato dextrose agar. Sclerotia were produced in larger numbers in natural Lancelin sand than in Geraldton loamy sand collected from the northern grain‐belt of Western Australia. The majority of the sclerotia produced were in >250 to <500 μam size range. The germination levels of sclerotia in the first two cycles of drying and germination were not significantly different. Sclerotia still retained 50% germination after four such cycles, indicating that they may have the ability to withstand the climatic cycles of the Mediterranean environment of southwestern Western Australia. The radial growth of the mycelium from sclerotia, however, declined with each drying and germination cycle. Inoculum potential of the pathogen increased with the size of sclerotia resulting in more severe lupin hypocotyl rot with larger sclerotia. The number of sclerotia produced in soil increased with increasing density of lupin seedlings. The results also indicate that R. solani AG‐11 can produce sclerotia on infected plant tissues as well as in soil. This is the first report of the prolific production of sclerotia by AG‐11 and their significant role in infection of lupins in soil in Western Australia. 相似文献

The body fattening and weight gain preceding vernal migration in birds is timed by a set of environmental factors of which daylength is predominant. However, the mechanism(s) by which these events is determined is poorly understood. Previous investigations on a photoperiodic migratory species, the blackheaded bunting ( Emberiza melanocephala ), indicate the involvement of a light-sensitive circadian rhythm during initiation of fat deposition and body weight gain. This communication presents data from another set of experiments aimed to characterize further the mechanism(s) of fat deposition in the same species.
Groups of photosensitive, unstimulated and stimulated birds were subjected to transfer and superimposition experiments for 30 days. While the former set included shifting of long-day (LD) birds to DD, SD (short days), DD/LD and SD/LD, in the latter a 90-minute bright light was superimposed at two different times of the day during the dim-green lighted phase 15L:9D of varying intensity. Birds were weighed at the beginning and at the end of experiments. Those in transfer cycles were also weighed at 10-day intervals. The results suggest that the premigratory body fattening and weight gain in blackheaded buntings is light dependent and timed by environmental daylength in accordance with the photosensitive endogenous circadian rhythm (ECR). Fast and slow growing Rhizobium spp. isolated from Cajanus cajan and Cicer arietinum were compared in terms of colony characteristics, utilisation of carbon sources, acid production, symbiotic effectiveness and nodulating competitiveness. Fast growing isolates from C. cajan and C. arietinum formed 3–6 mm diameter colonies on yeast-extract mannitol agar after 4 days and were unlike the slow growers which produced colonies of c. 1 mm diameter after 7–10 days at 28 °C. The fast growing Rhizobium spp. from C. cajan utilised a wider range of carbon sources than the slow growing isolates from this host. Fast and slow growing strains from C. arietinum were able to utilise most of the carbon sources tested suggesting that the slow growers possessed glycolytic pathways similar to those in other fast growing species of Rhizobium. In culture, slow growing isolates from C. cajan produced a near-neutral to alkaline reaction (pH 66·7-5) whereas the fast growers from this host and both fast and slow growing isolates from C. arietinum produced an acidic reaction (pH 4·4–5·6). These data are discussed in the context of Norris' (1965) evolutionary concept of the Leguminosae. Under glassshouse conditions, fast and slow growing strains isolated from C. cajan and C. arietinum were equally effective on their respective hosts. In competition with slow growing rhizobia, half of the fast growers formed more than 70% of the nodules on C. cajan grown in sand. In all but one instance similar results were obtained when plants were grown in soil. With C. arietinum grown in sand or soil, all fast growing isolates from this host formed more than 85% of the nodules in competition with slow growing strains. 相似文献

A rapid simple method has been described for the determinationof leaf area of Oxalis corniculata L. (Oxalidaceae) and Tephrosiapurpurea (Linn.) pers. (Leguminoseae) by evaluating area = a2x0.866and a2x0.335 respectively for the two plants, where a representsa single linear measurement. The relation has been derived afterintegrating the equation of the curve r2 = a2 cos 2 coveringthe area of each leaflet. Areas of a large number of leaflets have been determined withthe help of two methods (1) Planimeter method, (2) Evaluationmethod. The significance of the difference between the two valuesfor a particular leaf has been statistically examined and itappears that the former method can be replaced by the latterin the case of these plants. 相似文献

Different submodels within complex model packages on N regimes-for plant N-uptake, net N-mineralization, nitrate leaching and microbial N immobilization-are critically reviewed mainly with regard to their prediction ability on the basis of three comparative papers. Only for some of the processes adequate statistical evaluation of the models was possible. Compared to the other statistically evaluable process, nitrate leaching, modeling of plant N-uptake yields the better results. Most models for mineralization use arbitrary approaches rather than empirical ones. Although only approximate estimates of N mineralisation were at hand, the models generally behave expectedly poor. Only one model-DAISY-out of 16 involved in the comparison uses an explicit microbial biomass sub-model including microbial growth, decline and maintenance terms. So DAISY is the only model coupling C and N cycles. But what is true for an individual model describing the C and N transformation of a lab incubation experiment seems to be valid for most of the complex simulation work on the C and N regimes: this model was said to be overparameterized with respect to the available data. 相似文献
