PROTEINS OF AXONAL TRANSPORT: INTERACTION OF RAPIDLY TRANSPORTED PROTEINS WITH LECTINS

Rapidly transported fucose-labelled glycoproteins from the optic system of the rabbit were solubilised with the non-ionic detergent Berol 172. The major labelled components were bound to wheat germ agglutinin or Concanavalin A coupled to Sepharose but not to other lectins or glycoproteins. It was concluded that rapidly transported proteins contain exposed N-acetyl-D-glucosamine     

A note on antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli in adult man, raw sewage and sewage-polluted River Tigris in Mosul, Nineva

A total of 600 isolates of Escherichia coli were isolated, over a 9 month period during 1984, from healthy human adults, raw sewage and the sewage-polluted River Tigris in Nineva. Over 90% of these organisms were E. coli type 1, but only 8.3% could be serogrouped as enteropathogenic E. coli . Resistance of these organisms to 11 antimicrobial drugs was assessed. Over 40% were antibiotic-resistant and of these 77.1% were resistant to more than one antibiotic. The minimal inhibitory concentration of ampicillin for 193 selected strains from the various sources was determined and ranged from <0.625- > 160 μg/ml. The high incidence of antibiotic-resistant E. coli in this locality and the possible implications to human health are discussed.     

Evidence that Aspartate Aminotransferase Activity and Ketodicarboxylate Carrier Function Are Essential for Biosynthesis of Transmitter Glutamate

Based on the selective inhibition of glutamate release in cerebellar granule cells in primary cultures by the aspartate aminotransferase inhibitor, aminooxyacetic acid, and by the ketodicarboxylate carrier inhibitor, phenylsuccinate, a novel model for synthesis of transmitter glutamate is suggested: Glutamate is formed from glutamine in the mitochondrial intramembrane space by phosphate-activated glutaminase, transported across the inner membrane in exchange with aspartate, transaminated in the matrix to alpha-ketoglutarate, which via the ketodicarboxylate carrier is transferred to the cytoplasm, and transaminated to form transmitter glutamate. Such a mechanism would explain the functional role of aspartate aminotransferase in glutamatergic neurons.     

赤(瓜包)亚族植物叶片中脉的比较解剖

本文对赤(瓜包)属(Thladiantha Bunge)、白兼果属(Baijiana A.M.Lu et J.Q.Li)和苦瓜属(Momordica L.)共11种植物叶片中脉进行了比较解剖学研究。除苦瓜属一种外,其余10种的叶片中脉解剖学资料均为首次报道。分析结果表明:叶片中脉维管束的数目以及排列方式具有分类学意义,而种间和种内维管束数目的减少,在一定程度上反映出植物迁移和演化的方向。     

Studies on the metabolism of steroids in the foetus. Biosynthesis of 6α-hydroxytestosterone in the human foetal liver

After incubation of testosterone with 105000g microsomes of human foetal liver, 6alpha-hydroxytestosterone was isolated and identified by t.l.c. and g.l.c.-mass spectrometry. This is the first example of 6alpha-hydroxylation of C(19) steroids in the human liver, and the finding is discussed in relation to earlier reports of 6-oxygenated C(19) and C(18) steroids in pregnant women.     

Bemerkungen zur Taxonomie vonVicia sepium L.

In der ArtVicia sepium L. kann man in Mitteleuropa und in südlichen Teilen von Nordeuropa drei Varietäten unterscheiden: 1. var.sepium mit breiten Blättchen und einem kahlen bis angedrückt behaarten Kelch, 2. var.montana Koch mit schmalen Blättchen und einem kahlen oder zerstreut angedrückt behaarten Kelch, und 3. var.eriocalyx ?elak. mit breiten bis mittelbreiten Blättchen und einem abstehend langbehaarten Kelch, noch mit einer niedrigen und einer hohen Wuchsform. Bei allen Proben wurde die Chromosomezahl 2n=14 festgestellt.     

Bemerkungen zur Taxonomie und Nomenklatur vonLotus krylovii Schischk. etSerg. undL. corniculatus L. subsp.frondosus Freyn

Lotus krylovii Schischk. etSerg. undL. corniculatus L. subsp.frondosus Freyn sind zwei unterschiedliche Taxa, gekennzeichnet durch einige morphologische Merkmale.L. krylovii ist am nächsten mitL. tenuis Waldst. etKit. verwandt;L. corniculatus subsp.frondosus gehört in den Umkreis der Unterart vonL. corniculatus L., die im östlichen Teil des Areals der Art verbreitet ist. Nach ihrer Haupt-Verbreitung gehören die beiden Taxa zu den westasiatischen Arten.
