SEASONAL CHANGES IN BODY-WEIGHT OF OYSTERCATCHERS HAEMATOPUS OSTRALEGUS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The body-weights of Oystercatchers Haematopus ostralegus wintering in Morecambe Bay, north-west England, showed marked seasonal changes between late summer and late winter, with considerable differences apparent between adult and immature birds. An attempt is made to relate these changes to recorded seasonal variations in prey biomass and to the annual cycles of breeding, moult and migration of the Oystercatcher. The mean weight of females invariably exceeded the mean weight of males in samples collected on the same dates, regardless of age. Adults returned from northern breeding areas in very lean condition, with mean weights ranging from 526 g in males to 540 g in females. Mean weight then increased progressively, due mainly to fat deposition, to a peak in March (up to 662 g in males and 675 g in females) around the time of their main departures for breeding. Heaviest birds then exceeded 800 g. Birds migrating to Iceland in spring would need to be of above average weight in March to make the shortest crossing (850 km, 13 h), via Scotland, while Oystercatchers of 700 g and over could probably make a direct flight (1500 km, 25 h) from Morecambe Bay in favourable weather. Breeding weights of British Oystercatchers were similar to those of post-breeders returning to Morecambe Bay in late August. The mean weights of first-year Oystercatchers arriving in August were very low, 449 g in males and 478 g in females. Their weights, and those of second- and third-year immatures, then rose rapidly in autumn, with some fat deposition, and reached mean values ranging between 551 g (males) and 597 g (females) by November-December. Mean weight then fell by 10–17% from December to March returning close to or below the September levels, whereas adults gained a further 6% during these winter months. Summer and autumn weight gains, and the major moult of adults and older immatures, occurred when the biomass of their two staple mollusc preys, Mytilus edulis (mussel) and Cardium edule (cockle), was maximal. Winter loss in mean weight of immatures corresponded with declining prey biomass, suggesting either that they were less efficient than adults in coping with deteriorating winter food supplies, or that they had no need to accumulate further (premigratory) fat reserves. The autumnal increases in mean weight of immatures are interpreted as an adaptation for withstanding adverse feeding conditions in winter. The Oystercatcher appears to be the only wader species in Britain in which adults increase, rather than lose, weight during the winter. This may be a consequence of an early breeding season, but it may be regarded also as a measure of the success Oystercatchers have achieved by specializing on a difficult but plentiful prey source.  相似文献

We describe here three different hamster cell mutants which are resistant to diphtheria toxin and which provide models for investigating some of the functions required by the toxin inactivates elongation factor 2 (EF-2). Cell-free extracts from mutants Dtx(r)-3 was codominant. The evidence suggests that the codominant phenotype is the result of a mutation in a gene coding for EF-2. The recessive phenotype might arise by alteration of an enzyme which modifies the structure of EF-2 so that it becomes a substrate for reaction with the toxin. Another mutant, Dtx(r)-2, contained EF-2 that was sensitive to the toxin and this phenotype was recessive. Pseudomonas aeruginosa exotoxin is known to inactivate EF-2 as does diphtheria toxin and we tested the mutants for cross-resistance to pseudomonas exotoxin. Dtx(r)-1 and Dtx(r)-3 were cross-resistant while Dtx(r)-2 was not. It is known that diphtheria toxin does not penetrate to the cytoplasm of mouse cells and that these cell have a naturally occurring phenotype of diphtheria toxin resistance. We fused each of the mutants with mouse 3T3 cells and measured the resistance. We fused each of the mutants with mouse 3T3 cells and measured the resistance of the hybrid cells to diphtheria toxin. Intraspecies hybrids containing the genome of mutants Dtx(r)-1 and Dtx(r)-3 had some resistance while those formed with Dtx(r)-2 were as sensitive as hybrids derived from fusions between wild-type hamster cells and mouse 3T3 cells.  相似文献

Sublittoral Mytilus edulis L. from natural mussel beds of the Conwy Estuary fishery exhibited an annual cycle of dry flesh weight, biochemical composition, and caloric value during 1971–1974.Mean percentage values of the main components of dry flesh, with seasonal extremes in parentheses, were: protein 58.7 (46.4–73.1), carbohydrates 22.5 (4.1–36.7), lipids 7.0 (3.9–9.6), and ash 11.8 (8.8–17.2). The mean caloric values of dry flesh were 5.57 kcal/g ash-free and 4.92 kcal/g ashinclusive.Individual dry flesh weight was highest in summer and autumn, when protein and carbohydrate were maximal, and decreased through the winter to a post-spawning minimum in spring. Weight loss in winter resulted from rapid utilization of carbohydrate (glycogen) reserves and a depletion of both protein and lipid content. It is considered likely that mussels were then stressed by food shortage at the time when metabolic demands, due to gametogenesis, were highest.During the six main fishing months, October to March, the average weight of dry flesh fell by 30–50 % and caloric content by 35–45 %. The likelihood of similar losses in cultivated mussel stocks is indicated and the need for comparable information in fishery management is emphasized. The extent to which predators compensate for these seasonal changes in prey quality also requires examination.  相似文献

In the present study, we used osteoprotegerin (OPG), which blocks osteoclastogenesis, to correct and thus explain the hypercalcemia that is seen during dietary Mg deficiency in the mouse. Control and Mg-deficient mice received injections for 12 days of either OPG or vehicle only. Serum Ca was similar in Mg-deficient mice treated with OPG and in control mice receiving OPG (9.2±0.3 mg/dl vs. 9.2±0.5). Both groups had significantly higher serum Ca than controls or Mg-deficient animals receiving vehicle alone. Surprisingly, Mg-depleted mice that received OPG in doses that inhibit osteoclastic bone resorption remained hypercalcemic. Because mature osteoclasts still present in the marrow might be hyperactive, we examined osteoclast morphology at the light microscopic and ultrastructural level. Light microscopic examination of trabecular bone showed few osteoclasts in OPG-treated mice. Ultrastructural examination revealed that osteoclasts in OPG-treated mice have decreased contact with the endosteal bone surface and absence of a ruffled border. Because the morphology of the existing pool of mature osteoclasts did not enhance resorption, another mechanism, such as increased intestinal absorption of Ca in Mg-deficient mice, likely contributes to the hypercalcemia observed during Mg deficiency.  相似文献

We have identified in apple (Malus × domestica) three chalcone synthase (CHS) genes. In order to understand the functional redundancy of this gene family RNA interference knockout lines were generated where all three of these genes were down‐regulated. These lines had no detectable anthocyanins and radically reduced concentrations of dihydrochalcones and flavonoids. Surprisingly, down‐regulation of CHS also led to major changes in plant development, resulting in plants with shortened internode lengths, smaller leaves and a greatly reduced growth rate. Microscopic analysis revealed that these phenotypic changes extended down to the cellular level, with CHS‐silenced lines showing aberrant cellular organisation in the leaves. Fruit collected from one CHS‐silenced line was smaller than the ‘Royal Gala’ controls, lacked flavonoids in the skin and flesh and also had changes in cell morphology. Auxin transport experiments showed increased rates of auxin transport in a CHS‐silenced line compared with the ‘Royal Gala’ control. As flavonoids are well known to be key modulators of auxin transport, we hypothesise that the removal of almost all flavonoids from the plant by CHS silencing creates a vastly altered environment for auxin transport to occur and results in the observed changes in growth and development.  相似文献

Pakistan, the second most populous Muslim nation in the world, has started to finally experience and confront the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The country had been relatively safe from any indigenous HIV cases for around two decades, with most of the infections being attributable to deported HIV positive migrants from the Gulf States. However, the virus finally seems to have found a home-base, as evidenced by the recent HIV outbreaks among the injection drug user community. Extremely high-risk behavior has also been documented among Hijras (sex workers) and long-distance truck drivers. The weak government response coupled with the extremely distressing social demographics of this South-Asian republic also helps to compound the problem. The time is ripe now to prepare in advance, to take the appropriate measures to curtail further spread of the disease. If this opportunity is not utilized right now, little if at all could be done later.  相似文献
