Ten men and 11 women were studied to determine the effect of experimentally equating haemoglobin concentration ([Hb]) on the sex difference in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). VO2max was measured on a cycle ergometer using a continuous, load-incremented protocol. The men were studied under two conditions: 1) with normal [Hb] (153 g X L-1) and 2) two days following withdrawal of blood, which reduced their mean [Hb] to exactly equal the mean of the women (134 g X L-1). Prior to blood withdrawal, VO2max expressed in L X min-1 and relative to body weight and ride time on the cycle ergometer test were greater (p less than .01) in men by 1.11 L X min-1 (47%), 4.8 ml X kg-1 min-1 (11.5%) and 5.9 min (67%), respectively, whereas VO2max expressed relative to fat-free weight (FFW) was not significantly different. Equalizing [Hb] reduced (p less than .01) the mean VO2max of the men by 0.26 L X min-1 (7.5%), 3.2 ml X kg-1 min-1 (6.9%) or 4.1 ml X kg FFW-1 min-1 (7.7%), and ride time by 0.7 min (4.8%). Equalizing [Hb] reduced the sex difference for VO2max less than predicted from proportional changes in the oxygen content of the arterial blood and arteriovenous oxygen content difference during maximal exercise. It was concluded that the sex difference in [Hb] accounts for a significant, but relatively small portion of the sex difference in VO2max (L X min-1). Other factors such as the dimensions of the oxygen transport system and musculature are of greater importance.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of training on the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) at the ventilatory threshold. College students were assigned to either training (n = 17) or control (n = 10) groups. Trainers completed 18 interval training sessions (five X 5 min cycling at 90-100% VO2max) and 8 continuous training sessions (40 min running or cycling) in 6 weeks. Pre- and post-training, cardiorespiratory, metabolic, and perceptual variables were measured at the ventilatory threshold during graded exercise tests on a cycle ergometer. Ventilatory threshold was that point above which VE X VO2-1 increased abruptly relative to work rate. Post-training means of trained and control subjects were compared using analysis of covariance, with pre-training values as covariates. Following training, the adjusted means for the trained subjects were significantly greater (p less than 0.05) than for controls for VO2max (6%), and for work rate (20%), VO2 (23%), and %VO2max (13%) at the ventilatory threshold. However, adjusted means for RPE at the ventilatory threshold were not significantly different (2%). Both before and after training, exercise at the ventilatory threshold was perceived as 'somewhat hard' to 'hard' (RPE = 13-15) by both groups. The relationship between RPE and %VO2max was altered by training, with trained subjects having a lower RPE at a given %VO2max. It is concluded that RPE at the ventilatory threshold is not affected by training, despite that after training the ventilatory threshold occurs at a higher work rate and is associated with higher absolute and relative metabolic and cardiorespiratory demands.  相似文献

Microbial pathogens exploit the clathrin endocytic machinery to enter host cells. Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), an enveloped virus with bullet-shaped virions that measure 70 x 200 nm, enters cells by clathrin-dependent endocytosis. We showed previously that VSV particles exceed the capacity of typical clathrin-coated vesicles and instead enter through endocytic carriers that acquire a partial clathrin coat and require local actin filament assembly to complete vesicle budding and internalization. To understand why the actin system is required for VSV uptake, we compared the internalization mechanisms of VSV and its shorter (75 nm long) defective interfering particle, DI-T. By imaging the uptake of individual particles into live cells, we found that, as with parental virions, DI-T enters via the clathrin endocytic pathway. Unlike VSV, DI-T internalization occurs through complete clathrin-coated vesicles and does not require actin polymerization. Since VSV and DI-T particles display similar surface densities of the same attachment glycoprotein, we conclude that the physical properties of the particle dictate whether a virus-containing clathrin pit engages the actin system. We suggest that the elongated shape of a VSV particle prevents full enclosure by the clathrin coat and that stalling of coat assembly triggers recruitment of the actin machinery to finish the internalization process. Since some enveloped viruses have pleomorphic particle shapes and sizes, our work suggests that they may use altered modes of endocytic uptake. More generally, our findings show the importance of cargo geometry for specifying cellular entry modes, even when the receptor recognition properties of a ligand are maintained.  相似文献

We investigated whether a cooling vest worn during an active warm-up enhances 5-km run time in the heat. Seventeen competitive runners (9 men, maximal oxygen uptake = 66.7 +/- 5.9 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1); 8 women, maximal oxygen uptake = 58.0 +/- 3.2 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) completed two simulated 5-km runs on a treadmill after a 38-min active warm-up during which they wore either a T-shirt (C) or a vest filled with ice (V) in a hot, humid environment (32 degrees C, 50% relative humidity). Wearing the cooling vest during warm-up significantly (P < 0.05) blunted increases in body temperature, heart rate (HR), and perception of thermal discomfort during warm-up compared with control. At the start of the 5-km run, esophageal, rectal, mean skin, and mean body temperatures averaged 0.3, 0.2, 1.8, and 0.4 degrees C lower; HR averaged 11 beats/min lower; and perception of thermal discomfort (5-point scale) averaged 0.6 point lower in V than C. Most of these differences were eliminated during the first 3.2 km of the run, and these variables were not different at the end. The 5-km run time was significantly lower (P < 0.05) by 13 s in V than C, with a faster pace most evident during the last two-thirds of the run. We conclude that a cooling vest worn during active warm-up by track athletes enhances 5-km run performance in the heat. Reduced thermal and cardiovascular strain and perception of thermal discomfort in the early portion of the run appear to permit a faster pace later in the run.  相似文献

Molecular markers can be used to estimate gene flow indirectly by monitoring the relative frequency of alleles in adjacent populations. Sea beet (Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima) is a wild plant species found along the coastlines of many European countries and is closely related to cultivated beets. A set of six simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers that are polymorphic in UK populations have been developed for sea beet to assess the problems of indirect measurement of gene flow in these populations.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that elevation in heart rate (HR) during submaximal exercise in the heat is related, in part, to increased percentage of maximal O(2) uptake (%Vo(2 max)) utilized due to reduced maximal O(2) uptake (Vo(2 max)) measured after exercise under the same thermal conditions. Peak O(2) uptake (Vo(2 peak)), O(2) uptake, and HR during submaximal exercise were measured in 22 male and female runners under four environmental conditions designed to manipulate HR during submaximal exercise and Vo(2 peak). The conditions involved walking for 20 min at approximately 33% of control Vo(2 max) in 25, 35, 40, and 45 degrees C followed immediately by measurement of Vo(2 peak) in the same thermal environment. Vo(2 peak) decreased progressively (3.77 +/- 0.19, 3.61 +/- 0.18, 3.44 +/- 0.17, and 3.13 +/- 0.16 l/min) and HR at the end of the submaximal exercise increased progressively (107 +/- 2, 112 +/- 2, 120 +/- 2, and 137 +/- 2 beats/min) with increasing ambient temperature (T(a)). HR and %Vo(2 peak) increased in an identical fashion with increasing T(a). We conclude that elevation in HR during submaximal exercise in the heat is related, in part, to the increase in %Vo(2 peak) utilized, which is caused by reduced Vo(2 peak) measured during exercise in the heat. At high T(a), the dissociation of HR from %Vo(2 peak) measured after sustained submaximal exercise is less than if Vo(2 max) is assumed to be unchanged during exercise in the heat.  相似文献

Recent evidence indicates that evolution can occur on a contemporary time scale. However, the precise timing and patterns of phenotypic change are not well known. Reservoir construction severely alters selective regimes in aquatic habitats due to abrupt cessation of water flow. We examined the spatial and temporal patterns of evolution of a widespread North American stream fish (Pimephales vigilax) in response to stream impoundment. Gross morphological changes occurred in P. vigilax populations following dam construction in each of seven different rivers. Significant changes in body depth, head shape and fin placement were observed relative to fish populations that occupied the rivers prior to dam construction. These changes occurred over a very small number of generations and independent populations exhibited common responses to similar selective pressures. The magnitude of change was observed to be greatest in the first 15 generations post-impoundment, followed by continued but more gradual change thereafter. This pattern suggests early directional selection facilitated by phenotypic plasticity in the first 10–20 years, followed by potential stabilizing selection as populations reached a new adaptive peak (or variation became exhausted). This study provides evidence for rapid, apparently adaptive, phenotypic divergence of natural populations due to major environmental perturbations in a changing world.  相似文献

In vivo validation of whole body composition estimates fromdual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. J. Appl.Physiol. 83(2): 623-630, 1997.We validated wholebody composition estimates from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA)against estimates from a four-component model to determine whetheraccuracy is affected by gender, race, athletic status, ormusculoskeletal development in young adults. Measurements of bodydensity by hydrostatic weighing, body water by deuterium dilution, andbone mineral by whole body DEXA were obtained in 172 young men(n = 91) and women(n = 81). Estimates of body fat(%Fat) from DEXA (%FatDEXA)were highly correlated with estimates of body fat from thefour-component model [body density, total body water, and totalbody mineral (%Fatd,w,m);r = 0.94, standard error of theestimante (SEE) = 2.8% body mass (BM)] with no significantdifference between methods [mean of the difference ± SD ofthe difference = 0.4 ± 2.9 (SD) % BM,P = 0.10] in women and men. Onthe basis of the comparison with%Fatd,w,m, estimates of%FatDEXA were slightly moreaccurate than those from body density(r = 0.91, SEE = 3.4%; mean of the difference ± SD of the difference = 1.2 ± 3.4% BM).Differences between %FatDEXA and%Fatd,w,m were weakly related tobody thickness, as reflected by BMI (r = 0.34), and to the percentage of water in the fat-free mass(r = 0.51), but were notaffected by race, athletic status, or musculoskeletal development. Weconclude that body composition estimates from DEXA are accuratecompared with those from a four-component model in young adults whovary in gender, race, athletic status, body size, musculoskeletaldevelopment, and body fatness.
