The assessments by radiographers of 1628 consecutive patients referred for radiography in the casualty department were analysed. The radiographers missed abnormalities in the radiographs in 68 of the cases. Casualty officers missed abnormalities in 63 cases, but only 35 patients were common to both groups. Twenty eight of the radiographs interpreted wrongly by casualty officers were interpreted correctly by radiographers; 16 of these 28 were thought by the accident and emergency consultant to be clinically important. It is suggested that a system whereby radiographers signal abnormalities should be standard practice.  相似文献

The fore- and hindlimb muscles of 12 Setonix brachyurus joeys, aged 5 to 175 days postpartum, and four adults were dissected out and weighed. Individual muscles and muscle groups were analysed for absolute and relative growth changes. From comprising almost 59% of the total limb musculature at birth the forelimb muscles finally constitute just over 9% in the adult; the hindlimb muscles start at just over 41% and end at almost 91%. In both limbs, the extensor actions predominate in the proximal limb segment because of their propulsive functions, whereas in the distal segment the flexor muscles tend to be the larger because of their shock-absorbing and spring functions. During growth of the fore-limb there is a relative increase in the size of latissimus dorsi and triceps brachii and a decrease in the distal segment muscles; in the hindlimb the gluteal and hamstring muscles increase at the expense of the distal segment muscles. Specializations for speed include long distal hindlimb segments and proximally located muscle bellies. The above findings reflect the adaptations and changing locomotor patterns from birth to adult in the Quokka.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics are conducted on a dodecanoic acid monolayer/aqueous surface. Surface pressure is controlled by imposing constant-volume conditions for series of lengths of the square slab constituting the MD cell. The response of the alkanoate chains to the pressure is followed by examining various computed quantities that monitor their conformational order. These include atom-pair radial distribution functions, chain torsional angles, energies, atomic densities perpendicular to the interface, diffusivities and atomic plots. These quantities lead to chain separations which in the range 4-5 Å implying order when the alkanoate chains have a mean area of 0.18 nm 2.  相似文献

The impacts of growing coastal pollution and habitat alteration accompanying human encroachment are of great concern at the microbial level, where much of the ocean's primary production and biogeochemical cycling takes place. Coastal ecosystems are also under the influence of natural perturbations such as major storms and flooding. Distinguishing the impacts of natural and human stressors is essential for understanding environmentally-induced change in microbial diversity and function. The objective of this paper is to discuss the applications and merits of recently developed molecular, ecophysiological and analytical indicators and their utility in examining anthropogenic and climatic impacts on the structure and function of coastal microbial communities. The nitrogen-limited Neuse River Estuary and Pamlico Sound, North Carolina are used as examples of ecosystems experiencing both anthropogenic (i.e., accelerating eutrophication) and climatic stress (increasing frequencies of tropical storms and hurricanes). Additional examples are derived from a coastal monitoring site (LEO) on the Atlantic coast of New Jersey and Galveston Bay, on the Gulf of Mexico. In order to assess structure, function, and trophic state of these and other coastal ecosystems, molecular (DNA and RNA-based) characterizations of the microbial taxa involved in carbon, nitrogen and other nutrient transformations can be combined with diagnostic pigment-based indicators of primary producer groups. Application of these methods can reveal process-level microbial community responses to environmental variability over a range of scales. Experimental approaches combined with strategic monitoring utilizing these methods will facilitate: (a) understanding organismal and community responses to environmental change, and (b) synthesizing these responses in the context of ecosystem models that integrate physical, chemical and biotic variability with environmental controls. We describe a 2‐DE proteomic reference map containing 227 basic proteins in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex region of the human brain. Proteins were separated in the first dimension on pH 6–11 IPG strips using paper‐bridge loading and on 12% SDS‐PAGE in the second dimension. Proteins were subsequently identified by MS and spectra were analyzed using an in‐house proteomics data analysis platform, Proline. The 2‐DE reference map is available via the UCD 2‐DE Proteome Database ( http://proteomics‐portal.ucd.ie:8082 ) and can also be accessed via the WORLD‐2DPAGE Portal ( http://www.expasy.ch/world‐2dpage/ ). The associated protein identification data have been submitted to the PRIDE database (accession numbers 10018–10033). Separation of proteins in the basic region resolves more membrane associated proteins relevant to the synaptic pathology central to many neurological disorders. The 2‐DE reference map will aid with further characterisation of neurological disorders such as bipolar and schizophrenia.  相似文献

Protein characterization in situ remains a major challenge for protein science. Here, the interactions of ΔTat‐GB1 in Escherichia coli cell extracts were investigated by NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). ΔTat‐GB1 was found to participate in high molecular weight complexes that remain intact at physiologically‐relevant ionic strength. This observation helps to explain why ΔTat‐GB1 was not detected by in‐cell NMR spectroscopy. Extracts pre‐treated with RNase A had a different SEC elution profile indicating that ΔTat‐GB1 predominantly interacted with RNA. The roles of biological and laboratory ions in mediating macromolecular interactions were studied. Interestingly, the interactions of ΔTat‐GB1 could be disrupted by biologically‐relevant multivalent ions. The most effective shielding of interactions occurred in Mg2+‐containing buffers. Moreover, a combination of RNA digestion and Mg2+ greatly enhanced the NMR detection of ΔTat‐GB1 in cell extracts.  相似文献
