It has been estimated that plants are the most important source of medicine for more than 80% of the world’s population. Medicinal plants are a vital source of medication in developing countries. Despite the wealth of human experience and folklore concerning the medicinal uses of plants, proper scientific investigation has only been applied to a small fraction of the world’s plants. This is a cause of grave concern as plant species continue to disappear. A rapid response to this situation is urgently needed to prevent the disappearance of the plant species and the ethnopharmacological knowledge that accompanies them. In this review, recent work on the investigation of selected bioactive Thai medicinal plants is presented. Their biological activities against infectious diseases including antimalarial and anti-HIV, are highlighted, as well as their anticancer, antiulcer and anti-inflammatory properties. The chemical transformations of some selected compounds are discussed. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The endophytic fungus, Dothideomycete sp. CRI7, isolated from the terrestrial plant, Tiliacora triandra, was salt tolerant, capable of growing in the culture medium prepared from seawater; salts in seawater did not have any effects on the fungal growth. Metabolite productions of the fungus CRI7 cultivated in media prepared from seawater (MSW), prepared from deionized water supplemented with potassium bromide (MKBr) or potassium iodide (MKI), and prepared from deionized water (MDW) were investigated. It was found that the cultivation of the fungus CRI7 in MKBr and MSW enabled the fungus to produce nine new metabolites (19). The production of an azaphilone, austdiol (10), of the fungus CRI7 grown in MDW was 0.04 g/L, which was much lower than that grown in MSW, MKBr, and MKI media which provided the yields of 0.5, 0.9, and 1.2 g/L, respectively, indicating that halogen salts significantly enhanced the production of the polyketide 10. The cultivation of terrestrial fungi in media containing halogen salts could therefore be useful for the metabolite diversification by one strain-many compounds (OSMAC) approach. Moreover, the isolated polyketides had significant biosynthetic relationship, suggesting that the cultivation of fungi in halogen containing media could provide the insights into certain polyketide biosynthesis. One of the isolated compounds exhibited antibacterial activity with the MIC value of 100 μg/mL.  相似文献

Bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids, tiliacorinine (1), 2'-nortiliacorinine (2), and tiliacorine (3), isolated from the edible plant, Tiliacora triandra, as well as a synthetic derivative, 13'-bromo-tiliacorinine (4), were tested against 59 clinical isolates of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MDR-MTB). The alkaloids 1-4 showed MIC values ranging from 0.7 to 6.2 μg/ml, but they exhibited the MIC value at 3.1 μg/ml against most MDR-MTB isolates. The present work suggests that bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids are potential new chemical scaffolds for antimycobacterial activity.  相似文献

Metabolites from the endophytic mitosporic Dothideomycete sp. LRUB20   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The endophytic mitosporic Dothideomycete sp. LRUB20 was found to produce pyrone derivatives, dothideopyrones A-D (1, 3, 4, and 5), together with seven known compounds, including questin (9), asterric acid (10), methyl asterrate (11), sulochrin (12), and eugenitin (13), 6-hydroxymethyleugenitin (14), and cis, trans-muconic acid (15). Dothideopyrone D (5) and its acetate derivative 6 exhibited moderate cytotoxic activity. This is the first report on a naturally occurring muconic acid, which is commonly known as a biomarker in environments after exposure to benzene and phenol (or derivatives). Interestingly, the LRUB20 fungus could produce muconic acid in relatively high yield (47.8 mg/L). The utility of endophytic fungi in the field of white biotechnology is discussed.  相似文献

Background

Most group A streptococcal (GAS) vaccine strategies have focused on the surface M protein, a major virulence factor of GAS. The amino-terminus of the M protein elicits antibodies, that are both opsonic and protective, but which are type specific. J14, a chimeric peptide that contains 14 amino acids from the M protein conserved C-region at the carboxy-terminus, offers the possibility of a vaccine which will elicit protective opsonic antibodies against multiple different GAS strains. In this study, we searched for J14 and J14-like sequences and the number of their repeats in the C-region of the M protein from GAS strains isolated from the Northern Thai population. Then, we examined the bactericidal activity of J14, J14.1, J14-R1 and J14-R2 antisera against multiple Thai GAS strains.  相似文献

Hybrid flavan-chalcones, desmosflavans A (1) and B (2), together with three known compounds, cardamonin (3), pinocembrin (4) and chrysin (5), were isolated from leaves of Desmos cochinchinensis. Cardamonin (3) and chrysin (5) exhibited potent antioxidant activity with 15.0 and 12.2 ORAC units. Desmosflavans A (1) and B (2), pinocembrin (4), and chrysin (5) were found to be inhibitors of aromatase with respective IC50 values of 1.8, 3.3, 0.9, and 0.8 μM. Desmosflavan A (1) inhibited lipoxygenase with the IC50 value of 4.4 μM. Desmosflavan A (1) exhibited cytotoxic activity with IC50 values of 0.29–3.75 μg/mL, while desmosflavan B (2) showed IC50 values of 1.71–27.0 μg/mL.  相似文献

Traffic related urban air pollution is a major environmental health problem in many large cities. Children living in urban areas are exposed to benzene and other toxic pollutants simultaneously on a regular basis. Assessment of benzene exposure and oxidative DNA damage in schoolchildren in Bangkok compared with the rural schoolchildren was studied through the use of biomarkers.Benzene levels in ambient air at the roadside adjacent to Bangkok schools was 3.95-fold greater than that of rural school areas. Personal exposure to benzene in Bangkok schoolchildren was 3.04-fold higher than that in the rural schoolchildren. Blood benzene, urinary benzene and urinary muconic acid (MA) levels were significantly higher in the Bangkok schoolchildren. A significantly higher level of 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in leukocytes and in urine was found in Bangkok children than in the rural children. There was a significant correlation between individual benzene exposure level and blood benzene (rs = 0.193, P < 0.05), urinary benzene (rs = 0.298, P < 0.05), urinary MA (rs = 0.348, P < 0.01), and 8-OHdG in leukocyte (rs = 0.130, P < 0.05). In addition, a significant correlation between urinary MA and 8-OHdG in leukocytes (rs = 0.241, P < 0.05) was also found. Polymorphisms of various xenobiotic metabolizing genes responsible for susceptibility to benzene toxicity have been studied; however only the GSTM1 genotypes had a significant effect on urinary MA excretion. Our data indicates that children living in the areas of high traffic density are exposed to a higher level of benzene than those living in rural areas. Exposure to higher level of benzene in urban children may contribute to oxidative DNA damage, suggesting an increased health risk from traffic benzene emission.  相似文献
