Fifteen honeybee colonies (Apis mellifera L.) infested with the ectoparasiteVarroa jacobsoni Oud. were monitored for the number of mites falling to the bottom of the hive. Mites in the debris were counted periodically on the plastic sheet on which they were collected. Two months later, colonies were treated with an acaricide to determine mite population. A high positive correlation was found between the number of mites collected in the hive debris over different periods and the final population size. Based on this correlation, it was possible to use hive debris counts to predict the degree of infestation. Furthermore, counting fallen mites over a period of two months, followed by an acaricide treatment, might be a useful method of estimating the rate of growth ofV. jacobsoni in honeybee colonies.  相似文献

Six honey bee colonies hived in Langstroth nuclei were each artificially infested with 100 phoretic Varroa mites. Hive debris on bottom inserts was inspected every 3–4 days. The adult Varroa mites were compared with mounted specimens and catalogued into lightly pigmented and darkly pigmented females. After 4 months, an acaricide treatment was used to estimate the final mite population. Based on light and dark adult counts, we propose a balancing equation that follows the Varroa population increase at 7 day intervals and allows the calculation of experimental population growth rates. The calculated Varroa finite rate of increase is =1.021. Exponential and logistic growth models fitted to the balancing equation data gave R 2=0.986 and R 2=0.991, respectively. To develop a more precise model it would be necessary to follow the population growth beyond our experimental data.  相似文献

Dissecting the genetic basis of intraspecific variations in life history traits is essential to understand their evolution, notably for potential biocontrol agents. Such variations are observed in the endoparasitoid Cotesia typhae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), specialized on the pest Sesamia nonagrioides (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Previously, we identified two strains of C. typhae that differed significantly for life history traits on an allopatric host population. To investigate the genetic basis underlying these phenotypic differences, we used a quantitative trait locus (QTL) approach based on restriction site‐associated DNA markers. The characteristic of C. typhae reproduction allowed us generating sisters sharing almost the same genetic content, named clonal sibship. Crosses between individuals from the two strains were performed to generate F2 and F8 recombinant CSS. The genotypes of 181 clonal sibships were determined as well as the phenotypes of the corresponding 4,000 females. Informative markers were then used to build a high‐quality genetic map. These 465 markers spanned a total length of 1,300 cM and were organized in 10 linkage groups which corresponded to the number of C. typhae chromosomes. Three QTLs were detected for parasitism success and two for offspring number, while none were identified for sex ratio. The QTLs explained, respectively, 27.7% and 24.5% of the phenotypic variation observed. The gene content of the genomic intervals was investigated based on the genome of C. congregata and revealed 67 interesting candidates, as potentially involved in the studied traits, including components of the venom and of the symbiotic virus (bracovirus) shown to be necessary for parasitism success in related wasps.  相似文献

In general, it is difficult to measure air pollutant concentrations in remote areas, as they are mostly national parks and protected areas. Passive samplers provide an accurate and inexpensive method for measuring cumulative exposures of different air pollutants. They have been used to collect ozone data in both laboratory and field at different geographical scales. The objective of the present study is to fill the knowledge gap regarding air quality in remote areas of Spain, such as national parks and protected areas. Because there were no systematic data sets on the main air pollutants that could affect these areas, an air quality measurement network was established between 2001 and 2004 on 19 locations inside Spanish national parks and protected areas. The data collected suggest that ozone levels in mountainous areas are high enough to affect sensitive vegetation. Most of the locations registered moderate-to-high ozone levels, with important interannual variability. Altitudinal ozone gradients were observed in most of the parks with complex topography due to the establishment of local circulations that incorporate polluted air masses from polluted airsheds or even long-range transport (i.e., Canary Islands). Different latitude-dependent, yearly cycles were also observed, showing two, one, or no clear peaks depending on the region. These findings extend to the most southerly locations, except in the Canary Islands, where pollution transported from other regions in the upper transport layers probably led to the high concentrations observed.  相似文献

Cultivated cassava (Manihot esculenta) has a higher rate of photosynthesis than is usual for C3 plants and photosynthesis is not light saturated. For these reasons it has been suggested that cultivated cassava could be derived from wild species possessing C4 photosynthesis. The natural abundance of 13C and activities of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and phosphoglycolate phosphatase were measured in leaves of 20 wild cassava species to test this hypothesis. All the species studied, including M. flabellifolia the potential wild progenitor of cultivated cassava, clearly exhibited C3 not C4 characteristics.  相似文献

The dynamics of crop genetic diversity need to be assessed to draw up monitoring and conservation priorities. However, few surveys have been conducted in centres of diversity. Sub-Saharan Africa is the centre of origin of sorghum. Most Sahel countries have been faced with major human, environmental and social changes in recent decades, which are suspected to cause genetic erosion. Sorghum is the second staple cereal in Niger, a centre of diversity for this crop. Niger was submitted to recurrent drought period and to major social changes during these last decades. We report here on a spatio-temporal analysis of sorghum genetic diversity, conducted in 71 villages covering the rainfall gradient and range of agro-ecological conditions in Niger’s agricultural areas. We used 28 microsatellite markers and applied spatial and genetic clustering methods to investigate change in genetic diversity over a 26-year period (1976–2003). Global genetic differentiation between the two collections was very low (F st = 0.0025). Most of the spatial clusters presented no major differentiation, as measured by F st, and showed stability or an increase in allelic richness, except for two of them located in eastern Niger. The genetic clusters identified by Bayesian analysis did not show a major change between the two collections in the distribution of accessions between them or in their spatial location. These results suggest that farmers’ management has globally preserved sorghum genetic diversity in Niger.  相似文献

The effects of elevated gaseous SO2 concentrations in the lichens Evernia prunastri (L.) Ach. and Ramalina farinacea (L.) Ach. were investigated by means of gas exchange, modulated chlorophyll fluorescence analysis and antioxidant enzyme assays. The response to SO2 of the studied species differed markedly. Net photosynthetic rates were more adversely affected in E. prunastri than in R. farinacea . In addition, processes dependent on thylakoid membrane integrity such as PSII-mediated electron flow and nonphotochemical quenching were reduced to a greater extent by exposure to SO2 in E. prunastri . Moreover, the ability to reoxidize the quinone pool was lower in this species. Finally, the activity of chloroplastidic and cytoplasmic antioxidant enzymes was decreased in E. prunastri in response to fumigations but increased in R. farinacea . The results suggest that the ability to process and deal with the SO2 once it has been absorbed must play a role in determining the sensitivity of these lichen species to this air pollutant.  相似文献

In order to further characterize the still unknown mechanism of cuprizone-induced demyelination, we investigated its effect on rat primary oligodendroglial cell cultures. Cell viability was not significantly affected by this treatment. However, when concentrations of IFNγ and/or TNFα having no deleterious effects per se on cell viability were added together with cuprizone, cell viability decreased significantly. In mitochondria isolated from cuprizone-treated glial cells, we observed a marked decrease in the activities of the various complexes of the respiratory chain, indicating a disruption of mitochondrial function. An enhancement in oxidant production was also observed in cuprizone and/or TNFα-treated oligodendroglial cells. In in vivo experiments, inhibition of microglial activation with minocycline prevented cuprizone-induced demyelination. Based on the above-mentioned results we suggest that these microglial cells appear to have a very active role in cuprizone-induced oligodendroglial cell death and demyelination, through the production and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Two mitotypes of Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) named KI and KII, co‐exist in Kenya. Individuals of KII are more widely distributed than those of KI. The present study assessed whether this was due to differences in their reproductive potential and/or in their resistance to the braconid Cotesia sesamiae Cameron, which is the most common larval parasitoid of B. fusca in the region. Two populations of the parasitoid, one from the coastal and one from the inland regions of Kenya, which differ in their ability to develop in B. fusca, were tested. Virgin KII females started to call sooner during the night than KI females. Female fecundity and egg viability were significantly lower for the heterogamous than the homogamous crosses. Cotesia sesamiae from the inland produced larger progeny in KI than in KII host. Cotesia sesamiae from the coast did not develop in either host. Despite their long time co‐existence in the same geographical area, KII and KI conserved biological differences in terms of time of calling, fecundity, fertility and resistance against the larval parasitoid, C. sesamiae. This might explain the wider distribution of KII as compared to KI in Kenya.  相似文献
