At-sea metabolism (CO2 production) and water turnover of six breeding Grey-headed Albatrosses Diomedea chrysostoma were measured, using the doubly labelled water method, at Bird Island, South Georgia, Mean food consumption (estimated from a water influx rate of 1.01 1 d-1 and data on dietary composition) was 1200gd-1 or 50.4 W. At-sea metabolism (derived from a rate of CO2 production of 3.98 1 h-1 ) was 27.7 W, 2.5 times the estimated basal metabolic rate (BMR). On average the birds ingested nearly twice as much food energy as they expended to obtain it. The metabolic rate during flight (estimated from at-sea metabolism and activity budget data) was 36.3 W (range 34.7–39.0 W) or 3.2 (range 3.0–3.4) times the predicted BMR. This is the lowest cost of flight yet measured, but consistent with the highly developed adaptations for economic flight shown by albatrosses. Warmer and drier climates over Eastern Amazonia have been predicted as a component of climate change during the next 50–100 years. It remains unclear what effect such changes will have on forest–atmosphere exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) and water, but the cumulative effect is anticipated to produce climatic feedback at both regional and global scales. To allow more detailed study of forest responses to soil drying, a simulated soil drought or 'throughfall exclusion' (TFE) experiment was established at a rain forest site in Eastern Amazonia, Brazil, for which time-series sap flow and soil moisture data were obtained. The experiment excluded 50% of the throughfall from the soil. Sap flow data from the forest plot experiencing normal rainfall showed no limitation of transpiration throughout the two monitored dry seasons. Conversely, data from the TFE showed large dry season declines in transpiration, with tree water use restricted to 20% of that in the control plot at the peak of both dry seasons. The results were examined to evaluate the paradigm that the restriction on transpiration in the dry season was caused by limitation of soil-to-root water transport, driven by low soil water potential and high soil-to-root hydraulic resistance. This paradigm, embedded in the soil–plant–atmosphere (SPA) model and driven using on-site measurements, provided a good explanation ( R 2 > 0.69) of the magnitude and timing of changes in sap flow and soil moisture. This model-data correspondence represents a substantial improvement compared with other ecosystem models of drought stress tested in Amazonia. Inclusion of deeper rooting should lead to lower sensitivity to drought than the majority of existing models. The structure of animal communities has long been of interest to ecologists. Two different hypotheses have been proposed to explain origins of ecological differences among species within present‐day communities. The competition–predation hypothesis states that species interactions drive the evolution of divergence in resource use and niche characteristics. This hypothesis predicts that ecological traits of coexisting species are independent of phylogeny and result from relatively recent species interactions. The deep history hypothesis suggests that divergences deep in the evolutionary history of organisms resulted in niche preferences that are maintained, for the most part, in species represented in present‐day assemblages. Consequently, ecological traits of coexisting species can be predicted based on phylogeny regardless of the community in which individual species presently reside. In the present study, we test the deep history hypothesis along one niche axis, diet, using snakes as our model clade of organisms. Almost 70% of the variation in snake diets is associated with seven major divergences in snake evolutionary history. We discuss these results in the light of relevant morphological, behavioural, and ecological correlates of dietary shifts in snakes. In Myrtaceae (Myrteae), the diploid chromosome number 2 n = 2 x = 22 is the most common, although variations of ploidy level occur, with some triploid (2 n = 3 x = 33) and tetraploid (2 n = 4 x = 44) records. Karyotype details in this group are scarce because the chromosomes are small (< 2 μm). In this work, we carried out a karyotypic analysis of 15 species of Myrtaceae grouped in different subtribes and genera. Measurements of chromosome length (long arm, L ; short arm, S ) were taken and several karyotypic parameters were calculated for each species.
