The effects of drought stress and season on both allocation of photosynthates to stems and leaves and potential for stem rubber synthesis were studied in guayule ( Parthenium argentatum Gray USDA line 11604). Two-year-old plants grown under field conditions in the Negev desert of Israel were subjected to different irrigation regimes, and water status was assessed by measuring the relative water content (RWC). Undetached plant tips were exposed to a 1 h pulse of 14CO2, followed by a 24 h chase. 14C fixed and translocated to different plants parts and notably 14C incorporation into rubber and resin fractions was determined. The potential of detached branch slices to incorporate [14C]-acetate into rubber was also studied. A higher percentage of fixed 14C was translocated from shoot tips in winter (28–30%) than in summer (15–18%). The percentage of [14C]-acctate incorporated into the rubber fraction by stem slices was maximal in winter (20%) and minimal in summer (3–5%) in both cases in the absence of drought stress. In summer the translocation of photosynthates into stems was inversely related to plant RWC, dropping from 18% three days after irrigation to 3% 14 days later, and the potential of stems to synthesise rubber was high under drought conditions and low in well irrigated plants.  相似文献

Summary The effect of ventilation during the multiplication stage on the development of propagules from different clones of jojoba [Simmondsia chinensis (Link) Schneider] was investigated. Variation in the response to ventilation was due to genotype, the extent of ventilation, and to the period of exposure (transfer number). With intermediate ventilation treatments, propagules elongated to a greater extent and produced more dry biomass than propagules grown without ventilation. In the highest ventilation treatment, however, growth parameters were negatively affected. More importantly, propagules grown with moderate ventilation produced more plant material suitable for further multiplication and for the elongation stage than those grown in sealed tubes—the vessels used in our original micropropagation system. In five of the seven clones studied, growth and multiplication rate were decreased by the highest ventilation treatment. Propagules from the second and third multiplication transfers into ventilated vessels became more sensitive to high ventilation. Ambient water loss was slower in propagules produced under ventilation, probably due to smaller stomatal apertures. As a result of improved growth and decreased hyperhydricity by ventilation, the micropropagation protocol should be modified to include Magenta boxes equipped with vented lids as the preferred growing vessels.  相似文献

Jojoba [ Simmondsia chinensis (Link) Schneider] cuttings were grown in pots under constant light intensity and vapour pressure deficit at wir temperatures of 18 and 27°C in climate-controlled cabinets. Leaf conductance and transpiration rate decreased exponentially as the xylen water potential (Ψx) decreased concurrently with the drying out of the soil. At high Ψx'leaf conductance and transpiration rate were much higher at the higher air temperature, and as Ψx declined both parameters decreased more rapidly at 27°C than at 18°C. When soil temperatures were decreased from 27 to 13°C, leaf water potential was not affected at either air temperatures, but transpiration rate was reduced. A linear negative correlation was found between transpiration rates and soil temperatures. It is suggested that the low soil temperature may restrict reducion of water flux in turn reduces stomatal conductance and transpiration without affecting the water potential in the shoot. The releavance of the response to changes in soil or air temperature to the performance of the plant in its semi-arid habitat is discussed.  相似文献

Sink-source relationships and allometric ratios were studied in young seedlings of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) following pruning of some root types. The plants were grown in an aeroponic system allowing an easy access to each part of the root system, throughout the experiment, without disturbing the others. Root, leaf and stem growth as well as their mineral content were determined in one group of undisturbed plants (CTRL) and in four groups of plants treated as follows: TAP – the distal-free portion of the taproot was removed; HALF – half the laterals were removed; ALL – all lateral roots were removed, and TAP+HALF – both the distal part of the taproot and half of the laterals were removed. Removal of all the lateral roots (ALL) induced the development of a longer taproot but severely arrested shoot growth. Phosphorus, potassium and calcium contents were lower in the plants of the ALL treatment. However, the content of Mg was practically unaffected. The effect of the HALF treatment was hardly noticeable but the effects of TAP+HALF treatment were cumulative. The allometric relationships between the surface area of the roots and that of the leaves were restored within the experimental period, apparently due to reduction in shoot growth. Removal of the distal parts of the taproot did not cause an increase in shoot growth. This indicates that the strength of the sinks (mostly of lateral roots) rather than that of the source determines these relationships.  相似文献

Primary leaves of 8-day-old Phaseolus vulgaris plants dipped in water at 46.5 to 47.5 C for 2 minutes were found to have decreased synthesis of lipid and β-glucan compared to controls; UDP-glucose was used as substrate by cell-free preparations. As time elapsed, leaf growth, which was inhibited within the first 12 hours recovered in a subsequent 24-hour period. Synthesis of alkali-insoluble glucan by cell-free preparations was stimulated both in absolute and relative terms in the treated leaves at the later time period.  相似文献

The effects of kinetin and ABA application before or after heatshock were studied by determining the following parameters:CO2, fixation, leucine incorporation into protein and leakageof 36Cl or 14C-labeled metabolites. Kinetin pretreatment increasedthe heat damage while post-treatment enhanced recovery. ABApretreatment did not reduce heat damage while post-treatmentenhanced recovery, but to a lesser extent than kinetin. The rubber yield of the guayule plant (Tarthenium argentatum) is determined by its rubber concentration and biomass production, both of which are a function of genetic constituents and environmental conditions. With the aim of selecting best performing lines of guayule under the climatic conditions of the northern Negev of Israel, two-yr-old guayule plants from 13 USDA lines were evaluated for height, spread, canopy fresh and dry weight, branch and leaf dry weight, rubber and resin concentration, and rubber and resin yield per plant. Significant differences were found among the lines for all the characteristics tested. Lines 11600 and 11604 excelled in rubber and biomass production and were taller and more uniform than the other lines; whereas line N593, conventionally used as a standard, performed poorly and was less uniform. The correlation between rubber yield per plant and rubber concentration was poor, rubber yield being related mainly to biomass production and to a lesser degree to height and spread of the plants. Taken together with the fact that biomass production was more variable than rubber concentration, this finding suggests that breeding and selection of guayule for high rubber yield should be directed primarily towards improvement of biomass production rather than rubber concentration. In the northern Negev of Israel, USDA lines 11600 and 11604 performed well.  相似文献
