BACKGROUND: The plasmacytoid variant is a rare and controversial subtype of myoepithelioma that lacks myogenic differentation and the cytologic findings of which have not been reported previously. CASE: A 46-year-old man presented with a painless tumor located in the soft palate. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) showed odd-shaped cellular aggregates and single cells with round nuclei and finely granular cytoplasm resembling plasma cells together with strands of metachromatic stroma. The light, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies performed on the surgical specimen confirmed the initial cytologic diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Recognition of the cytologic findings of plasmacytoid myoepithelioma on needle aspirates allows a reliable and quick diagnosis that prompts correct management.  相似文献

Ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA) and Maedi–Visna (Maedi) are two chronic respiratory diseases of retroviral origin which occur worldwide. It is known that different host genetic factors influence the outcome of viral infections. To determine if variation in the Mhc-DRB1 gene was associated with progression to these ovine diseases, sheep lungs with and without OPA and Maedi lesions were collected. A sequence-based method was applied and 40 different alleles were detected in the sample analysed. In the allele-by-allele association analysis, allele DRB1*0325 had a significant association with susceptibility to Maedi (P = 0.045). For OPA, DRB1*0143 and DRB1*0323 were significantly associated with susceptibility (P = 0.024 and P = 0.029), and allele DRB1*0702 was significantly associated with resistance (P = 0.012). Based on these results, the Mhc-DRB1 alleles were classified by effect in three categories—susceptible (S), resistant (R) and neutral (N)—and animals were reassigned the genotypes as S/S, S/R, S/N, R/R, R/N and N/N. In a second analysis, penalised logistic regression models including a flock effect were run. In Maedi, significant association was detected for the N/S heterozygote (P = 0.0007), but not for the S/S homozygote, probably as a result of the low number of S/S animals. In OPA, association was detected for both the S/S and R/R homozygotes (P = 0.005 and P = 0.047). This allele grouping method may be applied in association studies with highly variable genes. This is the first study demonstrating significant associations between sheep Mhc-DRB1 alleles and susceptibility to OPA and Maedi. Therefore, both diseases are suitable candidates for more comprehensive genetic studies.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce the general architecture of a new electronic tissue called POEtic. This reconfigurable circuit is designed to ease the implementation of bio-inspired systems that bring cellular applications into play. It contains special features that allow a developer to realize systems that require evolution (Phylogenesis), development (Ontogenesis), and/or learning (Epigenesis). A dynamic routing algorithm has been added to a structure similar to that of common commercial FPGAs, in order to allow the creation of data paths between cells. As the creation of these paths is dynamic, it is possible to add new cells or to repair faulty ones at runtime.  相似文献

Trophically-transmitted parasites can affect intermediate host behaviors, resulting in spatial differences in parasite prevalence and distribution that shape the dynamics of hosts and their ecosystems. This variability may arise through differences in physical habitats or biological interactions between parasites and their hosts, and may occur on very fine spatial scales. Using a pseudophyllidean cestode (Schistocephalus solidus) and the threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) as a model parasite–host complex, we investigated the association of infection with host diet composition and stomach fullness in different habitats of two large lakes in southwest Alaska. To become infected, the fish must consume pelagic copepods infected with the parasite’s procercoid stage, so we predicted higher infection rates of fish in offshore habitats (where zooplankton are the primary prey) compared to fish from the littoral zone. Sticklebacks collected from the littoral and limnetic zones were assayed for parasites and their stomach contents were classified, counted, and weighed. Contrary to our prediction, permutational multivariate analysis of variance and principal components analysis revealed that threespine sticklebacks in the littoral zone, which consumed a generalist diet (pelagic zooplankton and benthic invertebrates), had higher parasite prevalence and biomass intensity than conspecifics in the limnetic zone, which consumed zooplankton. These results, consistent in two different lakes, suggest that differences in parasite prevalence between habitats may have been determined by a shift in host habitat due to infection, differential host mortality across habitats, differential procercoid prevalence in copepods across habitats, or a combination of the three factors. This paradoxical result highlights the potential for fine spatial variability in parasite abundance in natural systems.  相似文献

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are increasingly used in many products and are expected to end up in the aquatic environment. Mussels have been proposed as marine model species to evaluate NP toxicity in vitro. The objective of this work was to assess the mechanisms of toxicity of Ag NPs on mussel hemocytes and gill cells, in comparison to ionic and bulk Ag. Firstly, cytotoxicity of commercial and maltose stabilized Ag NPs was screened in parallel with the ionic and bulk forms at a wide range of concentrations in isolated mussel cells using cell viability assays. Toxicity of maltose alone was also tested. LC50 values were calculated and the most toxic Ag NPs tested were selected for a second step where sublethal concentrations of each Ag form were tested using a wide array of mechanistic tests in both cell types. Maltose-stabilized Ag NPs showed size-dependent cytotoxicity, smaller (20 nm) NPs being more toxic than larger (40 and 100 nm) NPs. Maltose alone provoked minor effects on cell viability. Ionic Ag was the most cytotoxic Ag form tested whereas bulk Ag showed similar cytotoxicity to the commercial Ag NPs. Main mechanisms of action of Ag NPs involved oxidative stress and genotoxicity in the two cell types, activation of lysosomal AcP activity, disruption of actin cytoskeleton and stimulation of phagocytosis in hemocytes and increase of MXR transport activity and inhibition of Na-K-ATPase in gill cells. Similar effects were observed after exposure to ionic and bulk Ag in the two cell types, although generally effects were more marked for the ionic form. In conclusion, results suggest that most observed responses were due at least in part to dissolved Ag.  相似文献

Migratory behaviour patterns in animals are controlled by a complex genetic architecture. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a salmonid fish that spawns in streams but exhibits three primary life history pathways: stream‐resident (fluvial), lake‐migrant (adfluvial) and ocean‐migrant (anadromous). Previous studies examining fluvial and anadromous Omykiss have identified several genes associated with life history divergence including the presence of an inversion complex within chromosome 5 (Omy05) that appears to maintain a suite of linked genes controlling migratory behaviour. However, adfluvial trout are migratory without being anadromous, and the genetic basis for this life history has not been investigated from evolutionary perspectives. We sampled wild, native nonanadromous rainbow trout occupying connected stream and lake habitats in a southwest Alaskan watershed to determine whether these fish exhibit genetic divergence between fluvial and adfluvial ecotypes, and whether that divergence parallels that documented in fluvial and anadromous O. mykiss. Data from restriction site‐associated DNA (RAD) sequencing revealed an association between frequencies of both the Omy05 inversion complex and other single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with habitat type (stream or lake), supporting the genetic divergence of fluvial and adfluvial individuals in sympatry. The presence of a genetic basis for migration into lakes, analogous to that documented for anadromy, indicates that the adfluvial ecotype must be recognized separately from the fluvial form of Omykiss even though neither is anadromous. These results highlight the genetic architecture underlying migration and the importance of chromosomal inversions in promoting and sustaining intraspecific diversity.  相似文献

Patient‐reported outcomes (PROs) are currently being increasingly used as primary outcome measures in observational and experimental studies since they inform clinicians and researchers about the health‐status of patients and generate data to facilitate improved care. PROs usually appear as discrete and bounded with U, J, or inverse J shapes, and hence, exponential family members offer inadequate distributional fits. The beta‐binomial distribution has been proposed in the literature to fit PROs. However, the fact that the beta‐binomial distribution does not belong to the exponential family limits its applicability in the regression model context, and classical estimation approaches are not straightforward. Moreover, PROs are usually measured in a longitudinal framework in which individuals are followed up for a certain period. Hence, each individual obtains several scores of the PRO over time, which leads to the repeated measures and defines the correlation structure in the data. In this work, we have developed and proposed an estimation procedure for the analysis of correlated discrete and bounded outcomes, particularly PROs, by a beta‐binomial mixed‐effects model. Additionally, we have implemented the methodology in the PROreg package in R. Because there are similar approaches in the literature to address the same issue, this work also incorporates a comparison study between our proposal and alternative methodologies commonly implemented in R and shows the superior performance of our estimation procedure. This paper was motivated by the analysis of the health‐status of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, where the main objective is the assessment of risk factors that may affect the evolution of the disease. The application of the proposed approach in the study leads to clinically relevant results.  相似文献
