The brain ventricular system is a series of connected cavities, filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), that forms within the vertebrate central nervous system (CNS). The hollow neural tube is a hallmark of the chordate CNS, and a closed neural tube is essential for normal development. Development and function of the ventricular system is examined, emphasizing three interdigitating components that form a functional system: ventricle walls, CSF fluid properties, and activity of CSF constituent factors. The cellular lining of the ventricle both can produce and is responsive to CSF. Fluid properties and conserved CSF components contribute to normal CNS development. Anomalies of the CSF/ventricular system serve as diagnostics and may cause CNS disorders, further highlighting their importance. This review focuses on the evolution and development of the brain ventricular system, associated function, and connected pathologies. It is geared as an introduction for scholars with little background in the field.  相似文献

This study examines the nature of intraspecific interactions among Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) planthoppers feeding on resistant and susceptible rice varieties. Planthopper nymphs produced less honeydew and gained less weight when feeding on rice variety IR62 (resistant) compared to susceptible rice varieties. A series of bioassays was conducted that varied N. lugens nymph densities on IR62 and IR22 (susceptible). Increasing nymph density facilitated feeding by conspecifics; however, intraspecific competition increased mortality of nymphs on IR62 (but rarely on IR22). Furthermore, nymph weights declined with increasing conspecific density on IR22, and the effects were weak on IR62. More female nymphs than males survived on IR62 but this was not affected by density. Nitrogenous fertilizer increased competition among N. lugens on young plants of IR22, but not on IR62. Results indicate that nymphs have a low efficiency in accessing resources when feeding on IR62, even where the plants have received fertilizer. Female‐biased survival and biomass compensation for mortality may promote population recovery after development on the resistant plant and accelerate adaptation to the resistant variety.  相似文献

Hybrid rice has been noted for its susceptibility to insects and diseases compared to pure‐line (conventional) rice varieties. We investigated herbivory by Nilaparvata lugens, Sogatella furcifera and Scirpophaga incertulas on replicated three‐line hybrid sets (parental and hybrid lines) in field and greenhouse experiments. In a field experiment, caterpillar densities and stemborer damage was similar among hybrid and parental lines. In field and greenhouse experiments, the cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS)‐lines and maintainer lines had higher densities of planthoppers (including N. lugens and S. furcifera) than restorer or hybrid lines likely because of their wild abortive CMS‐lineage. High nitrogen levels increased plant mortality due to N. lugens, but often reduced mortality from S. furcifera and S. incertulas: this was similar between hybrid and pure‐line varieties. The hybrids were generally more tolerant of herbivory (lower biomass reductions per unit weight of insect) than the inbred parental lines. The addition of nitrogen to both the hybrid and pure‐line varieties had contrasting effects on tolerance depending on the nature of the attacking insect: fertiliser increased tolerance to S. furcifera (lower losses of yield and shoot biomass per mg insect) and S. incertulas (lower yield, shoot and root biomass loss) but fertiliser reduced tolerance to N. lugens (higher loss of root biomass and no effects on yield and shoot biomass loss). Our results indicate that hybrid rice is not physiologically more susceptible to herbivores than are pure‐line varieties even under high nitrogen conditions, but does have higher tolerance to insect damage.  相似文献

Ecological engineering using vegetable or flower strips is promoted as a potential pest management strategy in irrigated rice. Farmers in the Philippines often plant rice levees (bunds) with vegetables, particularly string beans (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walpers) to supplement income, but without considering the potential for pest management. This study examines the effects of planted bunds on rice herbivores and their natural enemies. We compared arthropods in (a) rice fields that had string beans planted on bunds, (b) fields without string beans and without any insecticide applications and (c) fields without string beans but with insecticide treatments (standard practice). Rice yield was similar across all treatments; however, the vegetation strips produced an extra 3.6 kg of fresh string bean pods per metre of bund. There were no apparent increases in major natural enemy groups in fields with string beans compared to fields with conventional bunds. Fields with insecticide treatments had higher damage from leaffolders (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The sprayed fields also had lower parasitism of planthopper eggs and fewer predatory dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata). Furthermore, the mortality of planthopper (Delphacidae: Hemiptera) and stemborer (Pyralidae) eggs by parasitoids and predators was density dependent only in the unsprayed fields (with and without string beans). Our results demonstrate that planting string beans on rice bunds improves the productivity of rice farms, but our ecological engineering system did not appreciably affect natural enemy or herbivore abundance; however, chemical insecticides adversely affected pest regulatory ecosystem functions leading to higher pest damage.  相似文献

Mayaro virus (MAYV), an alphavirus similar to chikungunya virus (CHIKV), causes an acute debilitating disease which results in the development of long-term arthralgia in more than 50% of infected individuals. Currently, the immune response and its role in the development of MAYV-induced persistent arthralgia remain unknown. In this study, we evaluated the immune response of individuals with confirmed MAYV infection in a one-year longitudinal study carried out in Loreto, Peru. We report that MAYV infection elicits robust immune responses that result in the development of a strong neutralizing antibody response and the secretion of pro-inflammatory immune mediators. The composition of these inflammatory mediators, in some cases, differed to those previously observed for CHIKV. Key mediators such as IL-13, IL-7 and VEGF were strongly induced following MAYV infection and were significantly increased in subjects that eventually developed persistent arthralgia. Although a strong neutralizing antibody response was observed in all subjects, it was not sufficient to prevent the long-term outcomes of MAYV infection. This study provides initial immunologic insight that may eventually contribute to prognostic tools and therapeutic treatments against this emerging pathogen.  相似文献

Titrations of the quenching of the tryptophan fluorescence of yeast hexokinase isozymes P-I and P-II by Mg2+, Mn2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+ ions and by glucose in the presence of each of these ions (10mM) were performed at pH 5.5 and 6.5 at 20°C. At the higher pH there was a reversal of the type of glucose-binding cooperativity for P-II from negative to positive when either Mn2+ or Ca2+ was present in the buffered isozyme solution before the glucose titration, whereas Mg2+ caused the glucose binding to become noncooperative. Zn2+ and Cd2+ decreased the glucose quenching of P-II fluorescence drastically at pH 5.5, from a value of 15% in buffer to only 4%. Thus, only these two ions, of the five studied, cause the conformation change that results in quenching of the glucose-quenchable cleft tryptophan of P-II. Glucose binding to the P-I isozyme exhibited positive cooperativity in the presence of either Ca2+, Mg2+, or Mn2+, as well as in buffer alone, at both pH's. At the lower pH, Ca2+ enhanced the efficiency of glucose quenching of P-I fluorescence several-fold, while Mn2+ increased it only about 40% and Mg2+ not at all. Further, Ca2+ raised the degree of cooperativity (Hill coefficient) of glucose binding to P-I at this pH from the value of 1.42 in buffer and in the presence of Mg2+ and Mn2+ to 1.94, i.e., almost up to the highest possible value, 2, for dimeric hexokinase. However, at pH 6.5 the Ca2+ effect on the cooperativity was negligible, while Mg2+ and Mn2+ decreased the coefficient from 1.6 in buffer to about 1.4. The biological implications of these diverse metal ion effects are discussed.  相似文献

The microbiomes of phloem‐feeding insects include functional bacteria and yeasts essential for herbivore survival and development. Changes in microbiome composition are implicated in virulence adaptation by herbivores to host plant species or host populations (including crop varieties). We examined patterns in adaptation by the green leafhopper, Nephotettix virescens, to near‐isogenic rice lines (NILs) with one or two resistance genes and the recurrent parent T65, without resistance genes. Only the line with two resistance genes was effective in reducing leafhopper fitness. After 20 generations on the resistant line, selected leafhoppers attained similar survival, weight gain, and egg laying to leafhoppers that were continually reared on the susceptible recurrent parent, indicating that they had adapted to the resistant host. By sequencing the 16s rRNA gene, we described the microbiome of leafhoppers from colonies associated with five collection sites, and continually reared or switched between NILs. The microbiomes included 69–119 OTUs of which 44 occurred in ≥90% of samples. Of these, 14 OTUs were assigned to the obligate symbiont Candidatus sulcia clade. After 20 generations of selection, collection site had a greater effect than host plant on microbiome composition. Six bacteria genera, including C. sulcia, were associated with leafhopper virulence. However, there was significant within‐treatment, site‐related variability in the prevalence of these taxa such that the mechanisms underlying their association with virulence remain to be determined. Our results imply that these taxa are associated with leafhopper nutrition. Ours is the first study to describe microbiome diversity and composition in rice leafhoppers. We discuss our results in light of the multiple functions of herbivore microbiomes during virulence adaptation in insect herbivores.  相似文献

BackgroundDiagnosis of toxoplasmic encephalitis (TE) is challenging under the best clinical circumstances. The poor clinical sensitivity of quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) for Toxoplasma in blood and CSF and the limited availability of molecular diagnostics and imaging technology leaves clinicians in resource-limited settings with few options other than empiric treatment.Methology/principle findingsHere we describe proof of concept for a novel urine diagnostics for TE using Poly-N-Isopropylacrylamide nanoparticles dyed with Reactive Blue-221 to concentrate antigens, substantially increasing the limit of detection. After nanoparticle-concentration, a standard western blotting technique with a monoclonal antibody was used for antigen detection. Limit of detection was 7.8pg/ml and 31.3pg/ml of T. gondii antigens GRA1 and SAG1, respectively. To characterize this diagnostic approach, 164 hospitalized HIV-infected patients with neurological symptoms compatible with TE were tested for 1) T. gondii serology (121/147, positive samples/total samples tested), 2) qPCR in cerebrospinal fluid (11/41), 3) qPCR in blood (10/112), and 4) urinary GRA1 (30/164) and SAG1 (12/164). GRA1 appears to be superior to SAG1 for detection of TE antigens in urine. Fifty-one HIV-infected, T. gondii seropositive but asymptomatic persons all tested negative by nanoparticle western blot and blood qPCR, suggesting the test has good specificity for TE for both GRA1 and SAG1. In a subgroup of 44 patients, urine samples were assayed with mass spectrometry parallel-reaction-monitoring (PRM) for the presence of T. gondii antigens. PRM identified antigens in 8 samples, 6 of which were concordant with the urine diagnostic.Conclusion/significancesOur results demonstrate nanoparticle technology’s potential for a noninvasive diagnostic test for TE. Moving forward, GRA1 is a promising target for antigen based diagnostics for TE.  相似文献
