Evaluation of the relationships between muscle structure and digging function in fossorial species is limited. Badgers and other fossorial specialists are expected to have massive forelimb muscles with long fascicles capable of substantial shortening for high power and applying high out‐force to the substrate. To explore this hypothesis, we quantified muscle architecture in the thoracic limb of the American badger (Taxidea taxus) and estimated the force, power, and joint torque of its intrinsic musculature in relation to the use of scratch‐digging behavior. Architectural properties measured were muscle mass, belly length, fascicle length, pennation angle, and physiological cross‐sectional area. Badgers possess hypertrophied shoulder flexors/humeral retractors, elbow extensors, and digital flexors. The triceps brachii is particularly massive and has long fascicles with little pennation, muscle architecture consistent with substantial shortening capability, and high power. A unique feature of badgers is that, in addition to elbow joint extension, two biarticular heads (long and medial) of the triceps are capable of applying high torques to the shoulder joint to facilitate retraction of the forelimb throughout the power stroke. The massive and complex digital flexors show relatively greater pennation and shorter fascicle lengths than the triceps brachii, as well as compartmentalization of muscle heads to accentuate both force production and range of shortening during flexion of the carpus and digits. Muscles of most functional groups exhibit some degree of specialization for high force production and are important for stabilizing the shoulder, elbow, and carpal joints against high limb forces generated during powerful digging motions. Overall, our findings support the hypothesis and indicate that forelimb muscle architecture is consistent with specializations for scratch‐digging. Quantified muscle properties in the American badger serve as a comparator to evaluate the range of diversity in muscle structure and contractile function that exists in mammals specialized for fossorial habits. Non-uniform scaling of pulp and seed mass has been shown to alter dispersal probabilities in vertebrate dispersed species. Since dispersal in tropical forests is strongly linked to establishment success, processes determining allocation to pulp and seed are likely to impact on parental fitness, and therefore should be under the control of natural selection. In this study I examine size-dependent dry mass allocation pattern to pulp and seed mass both among and within 20 fruit-producing plant species of tropical rainforest in northeast Queensland, Australia. Reduced major axis analyses using mean values for each species showed significant isometry, indicating that at the community level, plant species that employ vertebrates as a means of seed dispersal tend to allocate an equivalent mean relative proportion of the overall dry weight investment in fruit to pulp. However, identical analyses conducted for each species separately revealed that relationships within individual species do not reflect the inter-specific relationship. These results imply two influences on dry mass allocation to fruit components; the first (within-species allometry) determines how fruits vary within each species. The second (between-species allometry) operates in a similar manner across species to produce equal ratios of mean pulp and seed mass independent of within-species allometries. 相似文献

Efforts to increase affinity in the design of new therapeutic molecules have tended to lead to greater lipophilicity, a factor that is generally agreed to be contributing to the low success rate of new drug candidates. Our aim is to provide a structural perspective to the study of lipophilic efficiency and to compare molecular interactions created over evolutionary time with those designed by humans. We show that natural complexes typically engage in more polar contacts than synthetic molecules bound to proteins. The synthetic molecules also have a higher proportion of unmatched heteroatoms at the interface than the natural sets. These observations suggest that there are lessons to be learnt from Nature, which could help us to improve the characteristics of man-made molecules. In particular, it is possible to increase the density of polar contacts without increasing lipophilicity and this is best achieved early in discovery while molecules remain relatively small. 相似文献

We sequenced the small subunit rDNA and internal transcribed spacer region of Gracilariaceae from the tropical Atlantic and Pacific, with emphasis on flattened or compressed species. Sequence comparisons confirmed three main lineages of Gracilariaceae: Curdiea/Melanthalia, Gracilariopsis/Gracilariophila, and Gracilaria. The Curdiea/Melanthalia diverged early in the family. Gracilariopsis was paraphyletic, because at least one Gracilariophila species evolved from it. The Atlantic Gracilariopsis were monophyletic and separated from the Pacific lineages. The Gracilaria included all species referable to its own species and to Hydropuntia, which was paraphyletic, formed by distantly related lineages. The new combination Gracilaria pauciramosa (N. Rodríguez Ríos) Bellorin, M. C. Oliveira et E. C. Oliveira is proposed for Polycavernosa pauciramosa N. Rodríguez Ríos. Recognition of subgenera within Gracilaria, based on spermatangial arrangement, was not supported. Instead, infrageneric groups were delineated by geographic origins and combinations of reproductive characters. Most Pacific species with either “textorii” or “verrucosa” type spermatangia were deeply separated from Atlantic species. Within the Atlantic Gracilaria, a lineage encompassing mostly tropical cylindrical species with “henriquesiana” type spermatangia and distinctive cystocarp anatomy was recognized. A lineage was also retrieved for cold water stringy species with verrucosa type spermatangia. Several species from the western Atlantic are closely related to Gracilaria tikvahiae McLachlan with nearly identical morphology. On the other hand, most flattened species from the tropical Atlantic were closely related despite their diverse morphologies. The interpretation of our data in addition to the literature indicates that more populations from the Indo‐Pacific must be studied before a general picture of Gracilariaceae evolution can be framed. 相似文献

By immunoscreening of a human cDNA expression library and hybridization of colonies, four partially overlapping cDNA clones of human hepatic triglyceride lipase (HTGL) mRNA were isolated. The clones included the complete coding sequence, the 3'- and at least part of the 5'-untranslated region. The length of the composite HTGL cDNA segment (1.7 kb) was consistent with the size of the mRNA identified in an established human hepatoma cell line. DNA-sequence analysis of cDNAs of partially unspliced mRNAs, and of cloned genomic DNA indicated that the HTGL coding sequence comprises at least six exons. As predicted from the cDNA, the unprocessed HTGL protein has a molecular weight of 56, three potential glycosylation sites, and a signal peptide of 23 amino acids. Sequence comparison with cDNA of other lipases, including rat hepatic lipase, revealed 30%-75% protein-sequence homology. The data establish that HTGL is a secretory protein produced in the hepatocyte, and that its synthesis can be continued in permanent cell lines of hepatoma origin. Our studies also showed that HTGL is another member of a lipase gene family which has interfacial binding sites and possibly other functional domains in common. 相似文献

Summary The cytogenetic analysis of 224 leiomyomas from 138 patients is presented. An insufficient number of mitoses was found in 35 tumors, normal karyotypes in 145, and clonal chromosome aberrations were detected in 44. The three previously identified cytogenetic subgroups were all represented in this series: del(7) (q21.2q31.2) was found in 11, trisomy 12 in five, and t(12;14)(q14-15;q23-24) in one leiomyoma. Rearrangements of 6p, including deletions, inversions, and various translocations, were found in eight tumors, thus delineating a new cytogenetic subgroup of uterine leiomyoma. The remaining 21 karyotypically abnormal tumors had nonrecurrent changes. One leiomyoma had two cytogenetically unrelated clones characterized by del(7)(q21.2 q31.2) and +12. Karyotypic changes in two separate leiomyomas from the same uterus were identified in five patients; in three of them, different anomalies were found in the two tumors, whereas cytogenetically identical aberrations – del(7q) and dic(21;22) – were detected in two macroscopically discrete tumors. These findings suggest that whereas some multiple leiomyomas originate independently, others may be derived from the same neoplastic clone. 相似文献

Several cDNA fragments encoding parts of the (U1)RNP specific 68-kDa autoantigen were expressed in Escherichia coli and the fusion proteins were used as substrate for localization of the autoreactive epitopes. We have identified a region of approximately 30 amino acids reacting with more than 90% (16 of 17) of all human anti-p68 sera tested, regions which carry only a few and a region with no autoepitopes. Comparative analysis of epitopes recognized on partially degraded fusion proteins indicated that the anti-p68 autoimmune response is polyclonal. It involves generation of antibodies to several epitopes including one in a region with retroviral gag protein homology speculated to play a role in the initiation of the autoimmune response. Each of the 17 sera tested contained a different set of autoantibody specificities. These data are not consistent with random mutation as a sole mechanism of anti-p68 autoantibody induction and argue for an Ag-driven autoimmune response. 相似文献
