During the rainy season (September–November 1994), in tributaries of Lake Tana (Ethiopia), the Gumara, Gelda and Negashu, barbs of diVerent morphotypes were ready to spawn, running and spent. The most numerous were barbs similar to Barbus intermedius common in many rivers of the Ethiopian Highlands. They were also found spawning in the Gumara and Gelda Rivers in the dry season (February 1996, 1997). There were no evident diVerences in time and place of spawning of barbs representing diVerent morphotypes. Only zurki, bigmouth mini-eye and bighead were not found in the rivers. Spatial and temporal segregation may contribute to reproductive isolation of morphotypes spawning in rivers, but if reproductive isolation exists the main role must be played by diVerences in mating behaviour. Morphotypes of the Lake Tana barbs have diVerent migration patterns. Barbs similar to the riverine B. intermedius may spend their lives in rivers or in the lake, moving to and fro. Barbs of acute, bigmouth big-eye and, perhaps, other morphotypes migrate downstream as alevins or fry, stay in the lake for several years and migrate back into rivers for spawning after reaching maturity. 相似文献

Background
Broad-scale phylogeographic studies of freshwater organisms provide not only an invaluable framework for understanding the evolutionary history of species, but also a genetic imprint of the paleo-hydrological dynamics stemming from climatic change. Few such studies have been carried out in Siberia, a vast region over which the extent of Pleistocene glaciation is still disputed. Brachymystax lenok is a salmonid fish distributed throughout Siberia, exhibiting two forms hypothesized to have undergone extensive range expansion, genetic exchange, and multiple speciation. A comprehensive phylogeographic investigation should clarify these hypotheses as well as provide insights on Siberia's paleo-hydrological stability. 相似文献7.

Abstract. We use a comparative phylogeographical framework to evaluate the hypothesis of hydrological exchange during the Pleistocene among the now disjunct Lena, Amur, and Enisei basins in Siberia, and to provide evidence on the causal mechanism of their present day faunal dissimilarities. Approximately 600 bases of the mitochondrial control region were sequenced in five distinct lineages among three genera of salmonid fishes, Hucho, Brachymystax and Thymallus. All three basins were fixed for divergent (2–5.4%) lineages of Thymallus whereas a single shared haplotype was present in all three basins for Hucho taimen ( Pallas, 1773 ) and one shared haplotype between the Lena and Amur basins out of a total of five for blunt‐snouted and one out of five for sharp‐snouted Brachymystax lenok ( Pallas, 1773 ). For both blunt‐ and sharp‐snouted lenok the haplotypes found within each basin did not form clades, so no relationship between genotypes and geographical occurrence was found. Our data support relatively recent hydrological mixing of the major river drainage systems in eastern and far‐eastern Siberia, congruent with the hypothesis of large‐scale palaeo‐hydrological exchange stemming from glacial advance, retreat and melting during Pleistocene climate fluctuations. Furthermore, these results in conjunction with a comparison of overall faunal composition suggest that environmental differences rather than historical contingency may be responsible for the faunal dissimilarities of the Amur, Lena, and Enisei river basins. 相似文献

Background
The ability to estimate the evolutionary distance between extant genomes plays a crucial role in many phylogenomic studies. Often such estimation is based on the parsimony assumption, implying that the distance between two genomes can be estimated as the rearrangement distance equal the minimal number of genome rearrangements required to transform one genome into the other. However, in reality the parsimony assumption may not always hold, emphasizing the need for estimation that does not rely on the rearrangement distance. The distance that accounts for the actual (rather than minimal) number of rearrangements between two genomes is often referred to as the true evolutionary distance. While there exists a method for the true evolutionary distance estimation, it however assumes that genomes can be broken by rearrangements equally likely at any position in the course of evolution. This assumption, known as the random breakage model, has recently been refuted in favor of the more rigorous fragile breakage model postulating that only certain “fragile” genomic regions are prone to rearrangements. Results
We propose a new method for estimating the true evolutionary distance between two genomes under the fragile breakage model. We evaluate the proposed method on simulated genomes, which show its high accuracy. We further apply the proposed method for estimation of evolutionary distances within a set of five yeast genomes and a set of two fish genomes. Conclusions
The true evolutionary distances between the five yeast genomes estimated with the proposed method reveals that some pairs of yeast genomes violate the parsimony assumption. The proposed method further demonstrates that the rearrangement distance between the two fish genomes underestimates their evolutionary distance by about 20%. These results demonstrate how drastically the two distances can differ and justify the use of true evolutionary distance in phylogenomic studies.9.

New concatenated mtDNA sequences (three genes; n = 22) of Siberian taimen Hucho taimen primarily from west Siberian and European regions of the species' range were added to 12 previously published sequences to provide a phylogeographic overview of the species. European samples show only very minor divergence from west Siberian populations, supporting a late Pleistocene expansion from Siberia into the Urals, with no particular relation to the Danube River basin huchen Hucho hucho as once hypothesized. The disjunct distribution of the genus is most likely based on an early Pleistocene vicariant event. 相似文献
