Iodine concentration by the fungus Penicillium chrysogenum inhabiting soils of the nonchernozem zone

The iodine accumulation by strains of microscopic fungi Penecillium chrysogenum isolated from soddy-middle podzolic soils of Kirov region has been studied. It has been shown that fungi are able to accumulate from 5,0 X 10(-5) to 10,2% of iodine depending upon the medium iodine content and the degree of the organisms' tolerance to its high concentrations.     

Modeling experimental pollinosis

Experimental pollinosis was modelled on guinea pigs. The animals were placed in a cell in which an allergen-water-dialyzed extract of ambrosia pollen was dispersed by means of coaxial pulveriser. Homocytotropic antibodies serving as indices of animal sensitization to the specific allergen formed in guinea pigs as a result of aerosol sensitization. Sensitization of the animals to the ambrosia allergen was accompanied by an increase of sensitivity of the broncho-pulmonary apparatus and was characterized by the bronchospastic reaction in resolving inhalation or inrtavenous injection of a specific allergen.     

Characteristics of the differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells of the bone marrow in experimental lesions of the liver

The liver lesion in the CBA mice has been induced by administration of one of three agents five times every day; gamma-globulin fraction of antihepatocytotoxic serum in doses of 4.8 and 7.7 mg of protein per 100 g of body mass; gamma-globulin fraction of normal rabbit serum and bovine serum albumin in a dose of 4.8 mg of protein; three- four- or five-fold introduction of carbon tetrachloride in a dose of 0.5 ml per 100 g of body mass with oil (1:1) each three days; calibrated stenosis of the portal vein was produced. The total number of hemopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow was estimated by the colony-forming unit/spleen assay. Histological analysis of the colony-forming units was applied. The liver lesion was accompanied by a decrease in the ratio of the erythroid/granulocytic colonies.     

Mechanism of circulatory disorders in animals irradiated at high doses

Some data are reported on pathoanatomical changes, a status of the microcirculatory channel and the coagulogram of animals affected by high doses of ionizing radiation. The signs of disseminated intravascular blood coagulation have been revealed. The authors discuss the relationship between clinical manifestations with coagulopathy development and circulatory disturbances during intestinal and cerebral forms of acute radiation sickness.     

Genetic determination of rheumatoid arthritis. Distribution of certain Mendelian markers in the light of correspondence of the disease heritability to the model of single autosomal two-allele locus with incomplete penetrance

The study on the nature of distribution of certain mendelian markers aimed at specifying their role in determination of rheumatoid arthritis disease was carried out, based on the material from the Family Data Bank of the Department of Epidemiology and Genetics of the rheumatic diseases in this institute comprising data on 200 families of patients with definite rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Antigens of HLA-system (the loci A, B, DR), ABO blood groups, Rh, MN and P, phenotypes of acid erythrocyte phosphatase and the types of haptoglobin were studied. Based on the data from this and the previous studies, it is established that the steadiest deviations of the RA patients groups from the general population concerned the frequency of HLA A11, B12, B27 and DR4, blood group P and phenotypes of the acid erythrocyte phosphatase. When using additional controls--a group of healthy mothers of women-probands from the families with the type of marriage "healthy x healthy", and analysing some pair combinations of the HLA system antigens, it was demonstrated that the most clearly their role in formation of the disease display the antigens DR4, and in their absence--DR3, and B12, whereas accumulation of A11 and B27 depended on the presence of other antigens of HLA loci--A and B. Taken together, these data may imply that genetic markers under study serve, when in certain combinations, as "modifiers" of the major gene, or, in a general case, of major genes of multifactorial disease affecting its appearance and clinical manifestations.     

Genetic determination of rheumatoid arthritis

The study on the nature of genetic determination of the definite rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and its forms was carried out, based on the material comprising clinical data on 189 probands and their 1st and 2nd degree relatives (713 subjects) which is contained in the computer Family Data Bank at the Department of Epidemiology and Genetics of this institute. The heritability coefficient "in narrow sense" (80%) obtained within the framework of the multifactorial threshold model confirmed once more important role of genetic factors in the appearance of the disease. The study of genetic heterogeneity within the framework of the Ch. Smith's and T. Reich's models failed to reveal any independent genetically RA forms. An assumption of the essential role of the genes localized in the X chromosome, based on diverse susceptibility of sexes, received no conformation. It has been shown that the RA distribution in the population and families may well be described by means of a variant of the single autosomal two-allele locus model with incomplete and differentiated for two sexes penetrance. The model parameters obtained, a particular penetrance of the mutant homozygote in both sexes equalling 100%, and penetrance of the normal homozygote equalling 0 in men and reaching 0 (0.028%) in women testify to a very essential influence of the major gene on determination of RA.     

Adaptive characteristics of growth of human embryos and fetuses during the intrauterine life]

Under observations was the dynamics of growth of human embryos and fetuses in embryogenesis which is directly dependent on the month of the intrauterine life. Coefficients of correlation and regression were calculated and with their help the average growth of the general length of fetuses in each month of prenancy was determined. The enlargement of the fetus length was found to be more intensive in the embryonic and prefetal periods.     

The ecology of a late Visean forest at Catcraig (East Lothian,Scotland) based on multiproxy study of paleosol and root-casts

The Middle Longcraig Limestone (late Visean) at Catcraig, Scotland, is densely covered with large (about 1 m in diameter) hollows, which are surrounded by numerous fossilized roots. The latter represent the positions of tree-sized plants belonging to a fossil forest. This paper aims to reconstruct its ecology based on paleosol properties, size and spatial distribution of root-casts, rooting system morphology and characteristics of coalified plant remnants. The obtained data are consistent with the supposition that the Visean peat wetland forest of Catcraig represents a Cordaitalean dominated community composed of mono-sized, most probably, even-aged giant trees. The peaty paleosol (Histosol) contains pyrite and siderite, indicating reducing and acidic conditions, whilst the abundant presence of gypsum testifies periods of elevated salinity. The adaptation of trees to such conditions is supported by morphologically evident large root mass (typically more than 1000 individual roots per cast). Good preservation of plant tissues in peat, in addition to other paleosol and rooting system characteristics allow us to conclude that the trees occupied seacoast settings or lagoons, which were not permanently flooded.
