Summary The effect of selection intensity and population size on the response to selection for percent oil in the grain of maize (Zea mays L.) was evaluated in a replicated experiment over ten cycles of selection. An open-pollinated variety, Armel's Reid Yellow Dent, was divided into subpopulations of 6,10 and 50 plants. Selection proportions of 17% and 5% were imposed upon each subpopulation. Selection was based on the percentage of oil in individual kernels as determined by wide-line nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. As expected, total response to selection increased with larger population sizes and selection intensities. The concave shape of the response curves suggested that an appreciable part of the genetic variance can be attributed to additive genes at high initial frequencies, dominance genes at low initial frequencies, or to the generation of negative linkage disequilibrium due to selection. The consistently greater loss of vigor experienced by the more intensely selected populations reflects the enhancement of inbreeding due to artificial selection, an effect that increases with the intensity of selection. The results indicate that combined selection, based on kernels and using within- and amongfamily information, will be more efficient than other conventional selection procedures, including the normal combined scheme where selection is based on plants.Deceased  相似文献

A program in BASIC is described which allows accurate quantificationof some numerical parameters that can be objectively correlatedto biological indexes in sigmoid biological events. Attentionwas focused on the polymerization process of actin (a muscleprotein with a mol. wt of 42 000 daltons) studied as the variationin the OD360 index with time. The experimental points, if plotted,can be well approximated by a rational function of the typeOD360 = f(t), which passes through the origin and can be representedgraphically by a sigmoid curve. The program was very helpfulin comparing the experimental curves and in analysing significantparameters, such as maximum velocity and asymptote, that characterizethese curves and whose interpretation would otherwise be purelysubjective. An unusual Rhodotorula isolated from decayed wood of Nothofagus obliqua (Mirb.) Blume is described and illustrated. The formation of arthrospores in Mucor rouxii was studied by transmission and scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. The arthrospores formed in a random manner in terminal and internal regions of the hyphae. The earliest appearance of the arthrospores was seen by scanning electron microscopy as compartments delineated by double ridges. These ridges probably corresponded to the site of septal wall formation. The elongated compartments varied considerably in size. As the arthrospores matured, they tended to separate as a result of a gradual change in the shape of the arthrospores to a nearly spherical form and also as the result of simultaneous degradation of the outermost cell wall layer. The mature arthrospores were surrounded by a complex cell wall consisting of at least three distinct layers in addition to the original hyphal cell wall. Crystal-like structures were seen in the cytoplasm of some of the arthrospores in addition to the usual organelles such as mitochondria, nuclei, and ribosomes. Septum formation by centripetal cell wall growth from the lateral hyphal wall was documented by transmission electron microscopy. However, evidence was also found which suggested that not all internal cell wall development in the fungal hyphae during arthrosporogenesis necessarily led to the formation of mature arthrospores.  相似文献

In humans the release of growth hormone (GH) elicited by dopamine (DA) and DA agonists may represent a reliable model to assess change in sensitivity of DA receptors. We now report that in chronic alcoholics, 4–7 days after the suspension of alcohol consumption, the increase of GH response to DA infusion was higher than that seen in non alcoholic volunteers. The specificity of this GH response to DA administration was demonstrated by the use of domperidone, a novel peripheral antagonist of DA receptors. These results suggest the development of hyper-responsiveness of DA receptors involved in the control of GH secretion in chronic alcoholics during the later phases of the “withdrawal syndrome”.  相似文献

Stratigraphic analyses of organic carbon, organic nitrogen and algal and bacterial carotenoids in short cores of profundal sediments of four alpine lakes (Tovel, Leit, Paione superiore and Tom) were used to reconstruct their trophic history. In addition, depth distribution of carbonaceous particle concentrations provided information on lake contamination from atmospheric deposition. In three lakes (Tovel, Leit and Tom), sedimentary carotenoids unique to sulfur photosynthetic bacteria (okenone and isorenieratene) provide evidence of changes in the oxygen, light and sulfide conditions in the water column. All the lakes are oligotrophic or moderately productive, and the algal community is dominated by Chlorophyta, Pyrrhophyta and Cryptophyta. Cyanobacteria are rather poorly represented. The steep increase of carbonaceous particles in the uppermost sediment layers of all the lakes suggests that lake contamination by atmospheric transport of pollutants began in the 1940s to 1950s. These data, coupled with those from a parallel study on Chrysophycean scale-inferred pH, indicate recent acidification in those which are poorly buffered (Paione superiore and Leit).  相似文献
