The nine microtubular doublets of cilia and flagella have distinctive features that make it possible to assign an index number to each of them. Such an indexing has been used for a long time for animal cilia and flagella, whereas other indexing systems have been proposed recently for plant cilia. It is shown here that the similarity between cilia from animals and cilia from plants and protists is so great that the same indexing system can be used for all cilia regardless of their derivation.  相似文献

The immotile-cilia syndrome: a microtubule-associated defect   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The immotile-cilia syndrome is a congenital disorder characterized by all the cilia in the body being either immotile or showing an abnormal and inefficient beating pattern. Most symptoms come from the ciliated airways (nose, paranasal sinuses, and bronchs) and from the middle ear. Two further symptoms are situs inversus and male sterility. Situs inversus occurs in 50% of the cases and this subgroup is termed the Kartagener's syndrome; it might be due to an inability of the embryonic cilia to shift the heart to the left side and situs laterality seems to be a random process in the immotile-cilia syndrome. Male sterility is caused by the spermatozoa being unable to swim progressively; the sperm tail has the same structure as a cilium. In a few cases only the sperm tail or only the cilia of the body are affected. Female patients have a decreased fertility; most are involuntarily childless. The immotile-cilia syndrome is a heterogeneous disorder in that one out of many different genes may be involved. The different subtypes can be distinguished by an electron microscopic examination which will show defects in either one of a number of the ciliary components.  相似文献

Livers from chickens, rats, mongrel dogs, Dalmatian dogs, and man have been examined in the electron microscope in order to compare the microbodies with the known content of uricase. It is concluded that microbodies with inclusion are present in rats, mongrel dogs, and, although the inclusion generally is smaller, in Dalmatian dogs. The inclusion has a characteristic structural appearance. These species (rat, dog) have uricase. Chickens and man lack both the enzyme uricase and the microbody inclusion. This evidence and that from previously published electron micrographs in the literature on microbodies support the notion of a positive correlation between uricase and microbodies with an inclusion. It is recommended that the term "uricosome" be used for such microbodies that have an inclusion of the appearance here described.  相似文献

The sperm structure of some dipteran flies belonging to the Lestremiini tribe have been examined. Anaretella cincta was shown to have an axoneme made of 20-21 microtubular doublets, disposed in a circle in a cross section and surrounding a mitochondrion. Other crystal-containing mitochondria flank the axoneme; a second species (Anaretella sp.) was provided with 21-22 axonemal doublets. Lestremia is characterized by a flattened axoneme, consisting of about 150 doublets arranged in 2 antiparallel rows and surrounding a few mitochondria. These mitochondria, in Lestremia sp., have a crystalline core that is missing in Lestremia cinerea. The structure of microtubular doublets is quite similar in the 2 related genera and a derivation of the flattened axoneme found in Lestremia from that circular of Anaretella is suggested. Sperm structure suggests that Lestremia cinerea is not a uniform species.  相似文献

Summary The spermatozoon of Oikopleura dioica is about 30 m long, with a spherical head, about 1 m wide, a 3 m long and 1 m wide midpiece, and a 25 m long tail with a tapered end piece. The head contains a nucleus with the chromatin volume limited to about 0.1 m3. A small acrosome is found in an anterior inpocketing, and a flagellar basal body in a posterior inpocketing of the nucleus. The midpiece contains a single mitochondrion with the flagellar axoneme embedded in a groove along its medial surface. The flagellar axoneme has the typical 9 + 2 substructure, and the basal body the typical 9+0 substructure. A second centriole and special anchoring fibres are absent.  相似文献

Re-examination, using molecular tools, of the diversity of haemosporidian parasites (among which the agents of human malaria are the best known) has generally led to rearrangements of traditional classifications. In this study, we explored the diversity of haemosporidian parasites infecting vertebrate species (particularly mammals, birds and reptiles) living in the forests of Gabon (Central Africa), by analyzing a collection of 492 bushmeat samples. We found that samples from five mammalian species (four duiker and one pangolin species), one bird and one turtle species were infected by haemosporidian parasites. In duikers (from which most of the infected specimens were obtained), we demonstrated the existence of at least two distinct parasite lineages related to Polychromophilus species (i.e., bat haemosporidian parasites) and to sauropsid Plasmodium (from birds and lizards). Molecular screening of sylvatic mosquitoes captured during a longitudinal survey revealed the presence of these haemosporidian parasite lineages also in several Anopheles species, suggesting a potential role in their transmission. Our results show that, differently from what was previously thought, several independent clades of haemosporidian parasites (family Plasmodiidae) infect mammals and are transmitted by anopheline mosquitoes.  相似文献
