1. The concept of evolutionary equilibrium has been derived from the theory of island biogeography via an ecological rationale for increase in species extinction rate and decrease in speciation rate with increasing diversity of the system.

This concept is theoretically plausible at the species level and at a regional scale but, in spite of several empirical tests in the fossil record, it has thus far remained unsupported by empirical evidence. In order to test it conclusively, one has to analyze not only the pattern of species number through time but also its relationship to speciation and species extinction rates; independent evidence for perturbations must also be available.
3. The concept of evolutionary equilibrium at the global scale must be extrapolated over higher levels of taxonomic hierarchy, for reliable species-level data are unavailable at this scale. A theoretical justification for this concept cannot, then, be derived from the theory of island biogeography.
4. The rates of family extinction and origination in the Phanerozoic show no evidence for diversity-dependence, which undermines most quantitative models of biotic diversification based on the concept of global evolutionary equilibrium. Rigorous testing of these models cannot be done at the present state of knowledge because of the uncertainty about the empirical pattern (sampling and taxonomic biases, absolute time scale).  相似文献

1. Thirty-six species of macrophytes (fourteen flowering plants, two quillworts, sixteen mosses and liverworts, and two algae) were collected in an extensive survey of 116 high mountain lakes in the eastern Pyrenees. Seventy per cent of the lakes showed macrophyte development. 2. The isoetids (Isoetes lacusiris, Isoetes setacea and Subularia aquatica) were the dominant growth form, although the natopotamid Sparganium angusifolium was the most widespread species. Potamids (Potamogeton spp., Ranunculus spp.), the alga Nitella gr. opaca and some mosses (Warnstorfia exannulata, Sphagnum denticulatum) were often present. 3. A multivariate ordination analysis (RDA-redundancy analysis) revealed that water chemistry, altitude and vegetation cover of the catchment, and nutrient availability are major environmental factors associated with macrophyte distribution along the eastern Pyrenean lakes. Isoetids prevailed in softwater oligotrophic lakes, potamids in relatively hardwater oligotrophic lakes, and Potamogeton natans and Callitriche palustris in small and eutrophic water bodies affected by the presence of cattle.  相似文献

Multiphasic accumulation of nutrients by plants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Seedlings of rice (Oryza sativa), soybean (Glycine max) and sour orange (Citrus aurantium) were grown for 20 to 125 days under controlled conditions in nutrient solutions wiht up to 16 different concentrations of NH4+, H2PO4-, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ or Zn2+. Nutrient concentrations differed by up to 4 orders of magnitude (H2PO4- and Zn2+) and were kept constant or within certain limits by changing solutions daily. Dry weights and concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg or Zn were determined for roots and tops (or roots, stems and leaves). The relationship between tissue concentration of an element and external concentration of the corresponding nutient ion was invariably multiphasic, with phases separated by sharp breaks or jumps. The kinetics of accumulation were similar to those of short-term uptake of the same ions. Reanalysis of previously published data (including data for Mn2+) for other plants yielded, similarly, bi- or multiphasic isotherms for accumulation. Accumulation patterns and growth were in several instances correlated, with separate phases coinciding with regions of poverty adjustment, luxury consumption and toxicity. Implications of multiphasic kinetics of long-term nutrient accumulation for membrane properties, fluxes and regulation include: (i) Membranes and uptake mechanisms must remain relatively constant throughout the life of the plant with respect to affinities for ions and concentrations at which transitions occur. (ii) Rate-limitation occurs at the plasmalemma of the root cortical cells. (iii) Uptake is at all times under multiphasic control by the external solution.  相似文献

Myotragus balearicus Bate 1909 is an artiodactyl Caprinae endemic to the Balearic Islands which became extinct more than 4000 years ago. Coprolites produced by this species have been collected from the excavation of Holocene cave sediments in Cova Estreta (Serra de Tramuntana, Mallorca). The pollen content of several samples of coprolites has been studied in order to determine the diet of Myotragus. Myotragus balearicus from Cova Estreta was a browser, and consumed huge amounts of box, Buxus balearica , a plant known for its high content of steroidal alkaloids. The coprolites are very fine textured, probably due to the result of a very efficient digestive process.  相似文献

We studied gene flow and bottleneck events in the population history of locally isolated citril finches endemic to European mountains. For the present study, we used two genetic markers with different rates of evolution: a fast evolving mitochondrial marker (ATPase6/8) and a more slowly evolving nuclear marker (02401). Populations north of the Pyrenees showed in general fewer haplotypes and a considerable lower nucleotide and gene diversity than the Iberian populations. Unexpectedly, we found very little genetic variability in the fast evolving mitochondrial marker, arguing for a strong and relatively recent bottleneck event in the species population history. This pattern potentially reflects a sudden decrease of crucial resources during Mid‐Holocene (mountain pine, Scots pine, and black pine) and a subsequent breakdown of the population. The bottleneck could also have been caused or coincide with a selective sweep in the mitochondrion. By contrast, the slowly evolving nuclear marker showed a much higher variability. This marker probably reflects major gene flow along a potential expansion pathway from the Eastern Pyrenees, northwards to the populations of Central Europe, and southwards to the more fragmented populations of central and southern Spain. The population of the Western Pyrenees (Navarra) appears to be cut‐off from this major gene flow and our data indicate a certain degree of partial isolation, probably reflecting more ancient events (e.g. the separation in distinct refuge sites during the last glacial maximum). © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 103 , 707–721.  相似文献
