Honeydew is the keystone on which ant–aphid mutualism is built. The present study investigates how each sugar identified in Aphis fabae Scopoli honeydew acts upon the feeding and the laying of a recruitment trail by scouts of the aphid‐tending ant Lasius niger Linnaeus, and thus may enhance collective exploitation by the ant mutualists. The feeding preferences shown by L. niger for honeydew sugars are: melezitose = sucrose = raffinose > glucose = fructose > maltose = trehalose = melibiose = xylose. Although feeding is a prerequisite to the launching of trail recruitment, the reverse is not necessarily true: not all ingested sugar solutions elicit a trail‐laying behaviour among fed scouts. Trail mark laying is only triggered by raffinose, sucrose or melezitose, with the latter sugar being specific to honeydew. By comparing gustatory and recruitment responses of ant foragers to sugar food sources, the present study clarifies the role of honeydew composition both as a source of energy and as a mediator in ant–aphid interactions. Lasius niger feeding preferences can be related to the physiological suitability of each sugar (i.e. their detection by gustatory receptors as well as their ability to be digested and converted into energy). Regarding recruitment, the aphid‐synthesized oligosaccharide (melezitose) could be used by ant scouts as a cue indicative of a long‐lasting productive resource that is worthy of collective exploitation and defence against competitors or aphid predators.  相似文献

There is no better use of sexual reproduction in regard to breeding and genetic research than the ploidy level manipulations possible in the potato and its relatives. Unique reproductive characteristics of tuber‐bearing Solanum species make possible: the production of gametes with unreduced chromosome number; the presence of an endosperm dosage system that regulates success of interploidy/interspecific crosses; the possibility to easily extract maternal haploids following crosses with S. phureja. This paper reviews results obtained in scaling genomic multiples up and down in potato, and relates these manipulations to breeding strategies for the genetic improvement of the cultivated potato. Several ploidy series have been developed, ranging from the monoploid to the hexaploid level. Cultivated tetraploids were scaled down to the diploid and monoploid level by haploidy. Scaling upward was achieved by sexual polyploidisation via 2n gametes that resulted in triploid, tetraploid, pentaploid, and hexaploid genotypes with a broad genetic base. Altogether, the success of ploidy level manipulations constitutes further proof that sexual polyploidisation played an important role in the polyploid evolution of Solanum species, and supports the idea that gene flow can be relatively easily accomplished through interploid and bridge crosses.  相似文献

This report describes a set of 21 polymerase chain reaction primers and amplification conditions developed to barcode practically any teleost fish species according to their mitochondrial cytochrome b and nuclear rhodopsin gene sequences. The method was successfully tested in more than 200 marine fish species comprising the main Actinopterygii family groups. When used in phylogenetic analyses, its combination of two genes with different evolutionary rates serves to identify fish at the species level. We provide a flow diagram indicating our validated polymerase chain reaction amplification conditions for barcoding and species identification applications as well as population structure or haplotyping analyses, adaptable to high‐throughput analyses.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The blood of 21 adult South American mouse opossums (Thylamys elegans) captured from April through August of 2005 in central Chile was examined for parasites. Light microscopic analysis of blood smears initially suggested that a highly pleomorphic Hepatozoon species typical of American opossums was infecting erythrocytes. Unexpectedly, amplification by PCR and sequencing of a DNA fragment of the small subunit rDNA combined with phylogenetic analyses indicated that the parasite is not a member of the suborder Adeleorina, which includes the Haemogregarina and Hepatozoon species, but that it is a clearly distinct member of the suborder Eimeriorina, which includes the cyst‐forming family Sarcocystidae. Therefore, a reclassification of this unusual intraerythrocytic apicomplexan will require additional life cycle, microscopic, and molecular analyses.  相似文献

Aphids show inhibition of wing development when parasitized by hymenopteran parasitoids, especially when parasitism takes place early in the host's development. The present study tests the hypothesis that the aphid itself redirects the resources needed for the development of wings to support the immune response, rather than the parasitoid directly promoting wing inhibition. When the aphid's immune system is challenged with bacterial antigens and a fungal pathogen, neither immune challenge alters wing development, indicating that perhaps there is no redirection by the aphid of resources required for wing development to cover possible costs of mounting an immune response.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of salt glands in developing leaves of Limoniumplatyphyllum is described prior to exposure to 3% NaCl solution(with non-secreting glands) and after 4.5 and 18 h exposureto the salt solution. It is shown that in most glands, the transitionto active chloride transport was accompanied by the displacementof vacuoles toward the cell periphery and by the establishmentof plasmalemma contact sites with the tonoplast which appearedsimilar to gap junctions in animal epithelial cells. No evidencefor the exocytosis of vacuoles was found. It is suggested thatgland vacuoles may have a primary role in chloride secretionand that the tonoplast may be functionally asymmetrical, sothat the free part facing the hyaloplasm bears ion pumps, whereashighly permeable ion channels are active along the zone of contactwith the plasmalemma. It follows that the active step in chloridetransport in Limonium glands is the influx of ions into thevacuoles. Within the inner cup cells of the gland, vacuolescome into contact with the plasmalemma only at sites where thecell wall is adjacent to secretory and accessory cells. Suchan asymmetry appears to ensure the directed flux of ions intothis cell wall. Wall protuberances in the gland cells are rudimentaryand presumably not involved directly in NaCl secretion. Thenucleolus is activated during secretion and the frequency offree ribosomes is significantly increased, which is suggestiveof their involvement in the synthesis of membrane transportproteins.
