The AXB and BXA set of recombinant inbred mouse strains

The recombinant inbred (RI) set of strains, AXB and BXA, derived from C57BL/6J and A/J, originally constructed and maintained at the University of California/San Diego, have been imported into The Jackson Laboratory and are now in the 29th to 59th generation of brother-sister matings. Genetic quality control testing with 45 proviral and 11 biochemical markers previously typed in this RI set indicated that five strains had been genetically contaminated sometime in the past, so these strains have been discarded. The correct and complete strain distribution patterns for 56 genetic markers are reported for the remaining RI strain set, which consists of 31 living strains and 8 extinct strains for which DNA is available. Two additional strains, AXB 12 and BXA 17, are living and may be added to the set pending further tests of genetic purity. The progenitors of this RI set differ in susceptibility to 27 infectious diseases as well as atherosclerosis, obesity, diabetes, cancer, cleft palate, and hydrocephalus. Thus, the AXB and BXA set of RI strains will be useful in the genetic analysis of several complex diseases.     

IL9 maps to mouse chromosome 13 and human chromosome 5

Mouse and human cDNA clones encoding the T-cell and mast cell growth factor P40, now designated IL-9, were used to identify DNA restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) in sets of somatic cell hybrids and between inbred strains of mice and interspecific backcross progeny. Segregation of mouse and human chromosomes among somatic cell hybrids indicated a location on mouse chromosome 13 and human chromosome 5. RFLPs were identified among inbred strains of mice. Analysis of chromosome 13 alleles for Tcrg, Dhfr, and Il-9 in an interspecific cross between Mus musculus and NFS/N or C58/J mice indicates that IL-9 is distal to Tcrg and Proximal to Dhfr.     

Chromium oxalate: A new spin label broadening agent for use with thylakoids

Potassium tris(oxalato)chromate(III) trihydrate (chromium oxalate) has been shown to be a more useful broadening agent than potassium ferricyanide for the spin label 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxy-4-amine (Tempamine) in thylakoid suspensions. Our data show that chromium oxalate is less permeable than ferricyanide, does not inhibit thylakoid electron transport or photophosphorylation, and is not photoreduced by thylakoids.     

A strain difference in the daily rhythm of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in the mouse

Effect of neurotensin on pancreatic function in man

The effect of neurotensin on submaximally-stimulated hepatobiliary and pancreatic secretion was studied in 6 healthy subjects. An intravenous infusion of neurotensin 1.4 ± 0.3 pmol/kg/min, designed to reproduce plasma neurotensin immunoreactivity levels within the physiological range, produced a significant increase in pancreatic bicarbonate output. Plasma concentrations of pancreatic polypeptide rose by 83 ± 16 pmol/l and were associated with a small reduction in trypsin, but no significant change in bilirubin outputs.

Determination of 5-dimethylaminonaphthalene-1-sulfonyl derivatives of urinary polyamines by ion-pair high-performance liquid chromatography

A sensitive and specific method for the determination of diamines and polyamines by ion-pair high-performance liquid chromatography is described. The 5-dimethylaminonaphthalene-1-sulfonyl derivatives of putrescine, 1,6-diaminohexane, spermidine and spermine are separated on a μBondapak C₁₅ reversed-phase column with 1-heptanesulfonic acid and acetonitrile as the mobile phase. All compounds are eluted within 30 min using a programmed solvent gradient system. The method has a lower detection limit of 1 pmole on column.Because of the simplicity of the method, its application provides a better means for closely monitoring patients undergoing treatment for various types of genito-urinary neoplastic diseases.
