The polysaccharides of mango seeds (mangifera indica,var. bullock's heart)

Mangoes (Mangifera indica) are grown in many warm regions of the world; for example, in Australia, Brazil, India, South America, and the United States (California and Florida), and along the shores of the Mediterranean sea (Egypt, Italy, and Spain). In Egypt, many varieties yielding delicious fruits are grown in large quantities (50,000 tons annually). Mango kernels are used for feeding mammals and chickens. Starch has been isolated from mango and its physical properties studied.The aim of the present work was to study the polysaccharides present in mango kernels.     

Sectoring of fungal colonies induced by low concentrations of fernasan

An inhibitor of Aspergillus flavus has been isolated from peanuts and identified as 5,7-dimethoxyisoflavone. Authentic 5,7-dimethoxyisoflavone, synthesized from benzyl-2-hydroxy-4,6 dimethoxyphenyl (3), and the isolated compound display identical ultraviolet spectra in methanol, in methanol+sodium methoxide, and in methanol+AlCl₃; similar behavior in solvent extraction, column chromatography, TLC, and fungal inhibition.     

Isolation of aflatoxin from Acacia and the incidence of Aspergillus flavus in the Sudan

A series of environmental and clinical isolates of Sporothrix schenckii being studied in our laboratories under standard conditions of temperature, humidity and media, displayed, in some of the isolates, large dematiaceous hyphae. The large hyphae could be seen to produce the fine hyphae associated with S. schenckii on which typical microconidia developed. Typical microconidia also developed occasionally on the large hyphae, and strands of the unusually large hyphae also were seen to form arthroconidia. Some strains formed large, thin-walled cells on thin and/or thick hyphae resembling the balloon cells seen in mature colonies of Trichophyton tonsurans.All strains which have demonstrated these various and unusual structures histopathologically produced typical sporotrichosis in laboratory animals. When reisolated from these animals, the cultures again exhibited the unusual structures, as well as those typical of S. schenckii.

The ultrastructure of a lateral organ in the head of Polyxenus lagurus which has been recently erroneously termed cerebral gland is described. It turned out to be a neurohaemal organ and not a gland, apparently homologous to the organ of Gabe of the luliformia.     

Validated spectrofluorimetric assay of two co-administered drug mixtures containing hydroxychloroquine with either moxifloxacin or ofloxacin as a drug regimen for hospital-acquired pneumonia in patients with COVID-19

Moxifloxacin and ofloxacin are two broad-spectrum quinolone antibiotics. They are among the most widely used antibiotics, at this time, applied to control the COVID-19 pandemic. Hydroxychloroquine is an FDA-approved drug for the treatment of COVID-19. This work describes a simple, green, selective, and sensitive spectrofluorimetric method for the assay of moxifloxacin and ofloxacin in the presence of hydroxychloroquine, two co-administered mixtures used in the treatment of hospital-acquired pneumonia in patients with COVID-19. Simultaneous assay of hydroxychloroquine and moxifloxacin was carried out in methanol using a direct spectrofluorimetric method (method I) at 375 and 550 nm, respectively, after excitation at 300 nm. The direct spectrofluorimetric assay was rectilinear over concentration ranges 50.0–400.0 and 300.0–2500.0 ng/ml for hydroxychloroquine and moxifloxacin, respectively, with limits of detection (LOD) of 6.4 and 33.64 ng/ml and limits of quantitation (LOQ) of 19.4 and 102.6 ng/ml, respectively, for the two drugs. The assay for hydroxychloroquine and ofloxacin was carried out by measuring the first derivative synchronous amplitude for hydroxychloroquine at the zero crossing point of ofloxacin and vice versa at Δλ = 140 nm (method II). Hydroxychloroquine was measured at 266 nm, while ofloxacin was measured at 340 nm over the concentration range 4–40 ng/ml for hydroxychloroquine and 200–2000 ng/ml for ofloxacin with LOD of 0.467 and 25.3 ng/ml and LOQ of 1.42 and 76.6 ng/ml, respectively, for the two drugs. The two methods were validated following International Conference on Harmonization guidelines and were applied to the analysis of the two drugs in plasma with good percentage recoveries (109.73–93.17%).     

The SF36 health survey questionnaire: an outcome measure suitable for routine use within the NHS?

OBJECTIVE--To assess the validity, reliability, and acceptability of the short form 36 (SF 36) health survey questionnaire (a shortened version of a battery of 149 health status questions) as a measure of patient outcome in a broad sample of patients suffering from four common clinical conditions. DESIGN--Postal questionnaire, followed up by two reminders at two week intervals. SETTING--Clinics and four training practices in north east Scotland. SUBJECTS--Over 1700 patients aged 16-86 with one of four conditions--low back pain, menorrhagia, suspected peptic ulcer, or varicose veins--and a comparison sample of 900 members of the general population. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--The eight scales within the SF36 health profile. RESULTS--The response rate exceeded 75% in the patient population (1310 respondents). The SF36 satisfied rigorous psychometric criteria for validity and internal consistency. Clinical validity was shown by the distinctive profiles generated for each condition, each of which differed from that in the general population in a predictable manner. Furthermore, SF36 scores were lower in referred patients than in patients not referred and were closely related to general practitioners'' perceptions of severity. CONCLUSIONS--These results provide support for the SF36 as a potential measure of patient outcome within the NHS. The SF36 seems acceptable to patients, internally consistent, and a valid measure of the health status of a wide range of patients. Before it can be used in the new health service, however, its sensitivity to changes in health status over time must also be tested.     

Resonance Raman kinetic spectroscopy of bacteriorhodopsin on the microsecond time scale.

Using a rotating disk with a slit of variable width, a continuous wave argon ion laser, and an Optical Multichannel Analyzer for detection, a new technique is reported which should, in principle, be capable of recording resonance Raman spectra with time resolution of 100 ns. The resonance Raman spectra of the intermediates of the photosynthetic cycle of bacteriorhodopsin are recorded on the microsecond time scale. Both the kinetic results and the resonance enhancement profile suggest that deprotonation results in an intermediate preceding bM412 that has an optical absorption maximum at a wavelength longer than that of bM412.     

Survival of Curvularia lunata var. aeria in soil

Spore suspensions from 7 day old cultures of Curvularia lunata (Wakker) Boedijn var. aeria (Batista, Lima and Vasconcelos) M.B. Ellis were added to soil samples originally devoid of Curvularia propagules. The test fungus disappeared after six weeks of inoculation irrespective of soil amendments, like the application of green manure, urea, superphosphate, or soil cropped to Sorghum (dura) or cotton seedlings.
