Many modern cities have strongly invested in the sustainability of their urban water management system. Nordic cities like Stockholm or Copenhagen are amongst pioneers in investments towards integrated urban water management. However, cities can never be fully self-sufficient due to their dependency on external (water) resources. In this paper, we quantify this water dependency with respect to food consumption in nine cities located in the five Nordic countries (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Iceland), by means of the water footprint concept. Detailed urban water footprint assessments are scarce in the literature. By analysing national nutrition surveys, we find that urban food intake behaviour differs from national food intake behaviour. In large Nordic cities people eat generally less potatoes, milk products (without cheese), meat and animal fats and they drink less coffee than outside city borders. On the other hand, they generally eat more vegetables and vegetable oils and they drink more tea and alcoholic beverages. This leads consistently – for the six large Nordic cities Stockholm, Malmö, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo and Reykjavik – to slightly smaller food related urban water footprints (−2 to −6%) than national average values. We also analyse the water footprint for different diets based upon Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR) for these cities. We assessed three healthy diet scenarios: 1) including meat (HEALTHY-MEAT), 2) pesco-vegetarian (HEALTHY-PESCO-VEG) and 3) vegetarian (HEALTHY-VEG). This shows that Nordic urban dwellers 1) eat too many animal products (red meat, milk and milk products) and sugar and drink too much alcohol and 2) they eat not enough vegetables, fruit and products from the group pulses, nuts and oilcrops. Their overall energy and protein intake is too high. A shift to a healthy diet with recommended energy and protein intake reduces the urban WF related to food consumption substantially. A shift to HEALTHY-MEAT results in a reduction of −9 to −24%, for HEALTHY-PESCO-VEG the reduction is −29 to −37%, for HEALTHY-VEG the reduction is −36 to −44%. In other words, Nordic urban dwellers can save a lot of water by shifting to a healthy diet.  相似文献

The inhibition of water diffusion across the rat erythrocyte membrane was studied by NMR using two basically different types of inhibitory agents: PCMB andin vivo irradiation. The contribution of lipid and protein to water permeability revealed the inhibitory effect of each pathway. Internal contamination with tritium (25–115 mGy) reduces water permeability due to protein modifications; for doses higher than 100 mGy the lipid mediated mechanism seems also to be impaired. The same procedure enables one to assess the extent to which the higher water permeability of rat, compared to human, erythrocyte is due to one of the two pathways.  相似文献

Electrical impedance measurements made on white spruce, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, stems were related to shoot free sugar contents and to osmotic, turgor and water potential. During seasonal dormancy induction, there were commensurate increases in free sugar contents, osmotic potential at full turgor and impedance which resulted in linear relationships among these variables. When measured over the course of laboratory drying, impedance increased curvilinearly with decreasing relative water content. There was a linear increase in impedance with decreasing water potential, with a break point coincident with the turgor loss point, possibly attributed to disruption to current flow through broken plasmodesmatal connections between adjacent cells. This technique offers a non-destructive method to measure tissue free sugar content, and therefore, short- and long-term shifts in parameters historically derived from pressure-volume analysis.  相似文献

We describe a solid vegetable oil–water gel structure which is stabilized through the use of low concentrations of monoglycerides, containing no added trans fats or saturated fats. The resulting structure consists of oil droplets encapsulated in self-assembled crystalline monoglyceride multilayers, surrounded by a continuous water phase. Acute ingestion human feeding trials indicated that the serum triglyceride loading was significantly lower after ingestion of the structured gel rather than a simple oil–water mixture, resulting in an attenuated increase in serum insulin. This indicates the effectiveness of encapsulation in modulating blood lipid and insulin response in humans, and suggests a strategy that can be employed for the controlled release of food macronutrients. Resource availability constrains the life history strategies available to organisms and may thereby limit population growth rates and productivity. We used this conceptual framework to explore the mechanisms driving recently reported negative relationships between fish productivity and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in lakes. We studied populations of bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) in a set of lakes with DOC concentrations ranging from 3 to 24 mg/L; previous work has demonstrated that primary and secondary productivity of food webs is negatively related to DOC concentration across this gradient. For each population, we quantified individual growth rate, age at maturity, age‐specific fecundity, maximum age, length‐weight and length‐egg size relationships, and other life history characteristics. We observed a strong negative relationship between maximum size and DOC concentration; for instance, fish reached masses of 150 to 260 g in low‐DOC lakes but <120 g in high‐DOC lakes. Relationships between fecundity and length, and between egg size and length, were constant across the DOC gradient. Because fish in high‐DOC lakes reached smaller sizes but had similar fecundity and egg size at a given size, their total lifetime fecundity was as much as two orders of magnitude lower than fish in low‐DOC lakes. High DOC concentrations appeared to constrain the range of bluegill life history strategies available; populations in high‐DOC lakes always had low initial growth rates and high ages at maturity, whereas populations in low‐DOC showed higher variability in these traits. This was also the case for the intrinsic rates of natural increase of these populations, which were always low at the high end of the DOC gradient. The potentially lower capacity for fish populations in high‐DOC lakes to recover from exploitation has clear implications for the sustainable management of recreational fisheries in the face of considerable spatial heterogeneity and ongoing temporal change in lake DOC concentrations.  相似文献

综述了中国从国外引进燕麦种质资源及其利用情况。经过长期努力,中国从28个国家引进29个物种的燕麦种质资源共计2099份,大大增加了中国燕麦种质资源的数量,丰富了中国保存燕麦种质资源的物种和遗传多样性。与此同时,利用国外燕麦种质资源改良和培育出了一批优良品种,极大地提高了中国燕麦生产水平。利用引进的燕麦野生资源,开展了燕麦种质创新、起源进化和遗传学研究,取得了显著进展。建议继续加强国外燕麦种质资源的引进,对野生燕麦进行深入鉴定评价和利用,同时加强燕麦种质资源国际合作研究。  相似文献

Spherical and cylindrical water droplets on silicon surface are studied to tune the silicon–oxygen interaction. We use molecular dynamics simulations to estimate the contact angle of two different shaped droplets. We found that the cylindrical droplets are independent of the line tension as their three phases curvature is equal zero. Additionally, we compare an analytical model, taking into account or not the Tolman length and we show that for spherical small size droplets, this length is important to be included, in contrast to cylindrical droplets in which the influence of the Tolman length is negligible. We demonstrate that the usual convenient way to exclude linear tension in the general case can give wrong results. Here, we consider cylindrical droplets, since their contact angle does not depend on the droplet size in the range of few to 10ths of nanometres. The droplets are stabilised due to the periodic boundary conditions. This allows us to propose a new parameterisation for nanoscale droplets, which is independent the size of the droplets or its shape, minimising at the same time the calculation procedure. With the proposed methodology, we can extract the epsilon parameter of the interaction potential between a liquid and a solid from the nanoscaled molecular simulation with only as input the macrosized experimental wetting angle for a given temperature.  相似文献

In this work, different water models (i.e. SPC/E, TIP3P, TIP4P/2005, TIP5P, SPC/Fw, TIP4P/2005f and SWM4_DP) are implemented to simulate water on neutral, negatively charged and positively charged graphene. In all cases ambient conditions are considered. Structural and dynamical properties for water are calculated to quantify the differences among various water models. The results show that SPC/E, TIP4P/2005, SPC/Fw, TIP4P/2005f and SWM4_DP water models yield a similar structure for interfacial water on graphene, whether it is neutral, negatively charged or positively charged. TIP5P is the model whose predictions for the structure of the interface deviate the most from those of the other models. Although qualitatively the results are for the most part similar, a large quantitative variation is observed among the dynamical properties predicted when various water models are implemented. Although experimental data are not available to discriminate the most/least accurate of the model predictions, our results could be useful for comparing results for interfacial water obtained implementing different models. Such critical comparison will benefit practical applications such as the development of energy-storage and water-desalination devices (e.g. electric double-layer capacitors), among others.  相似文献

The water relations of shoots of young jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) seedlings were examined 6 and 15 weeks after the initiation of four different dynamic nitrogen (N) treatments using a pressure-volume analysis. The N treatments produced a wide range of needle N concentrations from 12 to 32 mg g?1 dry mass and a 10-fold difference in total dry mass at 15 weeks. Osmotic potential at full turgor did not change over the range of needle N concentrations observed. Osmotic potential at turgor-loss point, however, declined as N concentrations decreased, indicating an increased ability of N-deficient jack pine plants to maintain turgor. The increase could be attributed largely to an increase in cell wall elasticity, suggesting that elasticity changes may be a common, significant adaptation of plants to environmental stresses. Dry mass per unit saturated water almost doubled as needle N level dropped from 32 to 12 mg g?1 and was inversely correlated to the bulk modulus of elasticity. This suggests that cell wall elasticity is determined more by the nature of its cross-linking matrix than by the total amount of cell wall material present. Developmental change was evident in the response of some water relation variables to N limitation.  相似文献
