Diel landing periodicity (biting cycle) of domestic Aedes aegypti (L.) in Trinidad, West Indies, was monitored using human bait during January-August 1980. The periodicity of females was predominantly diurnal (95.2% arriving during daylight or twilight) and bimodal, with consistent peaks at 06.00-07.00 and 17.00-18.00 hours. The diel periodicities at indoor and outdoor sites were virtually identical. Larger numbers of adults were collected outside than inside houses. It is recommended that the time of insecticidal ULV adulticiding should coincide with peaks in landing periodicity of the Ae.aegypti adults.  相似文献

Abstract It has been questioned whether the microorganisms isolated from hay, which the ice-man had used for padding his boots, were authentic. The arguments in favour of, and those brought forward against, the authenticity are discussed. Based upon additional circumstantial evidence we maintain our view that the microbial strains isolated from the grass samples are more likely to be of ancient origin than to have been derived from secondary contamination.  相似文献

Application of a suspension (log 8.0/ml) of Cryptococcus laurentii prior to harvest led to a reduction in Botrytis cinerea decay of strawberries stored at 4 or 20 °C, for 12 or 4 days, respectively. The frequency of spraying antagonist significantly influenced disease incidence in strawberry fruit. The best inhibition of disease was achieved when fruit sprayed C. laurentii with three applications that began 6 days prior to harvest, and the incidence of gray mold and natural decay treated with this method was 21% and 11%, compared with 88% and 62% in the control after storage at 20 °C for 4 days. A similar result occurred in the treated fruit after storage at 4 °C for 12 days. Dilation plate counts on Rose Bengal agar and scanning electron microscopy results showed that three applications with C. laurentii at 6, 3 and 0 days before harvest improved its ability to colonize the epidermis of strawberry fruit in the greenhouse and during storage compared to single application. In addition, antagonistic yeast spraying before harvest could reduce the weight loss, delay the decrease of the firmness and ascorbic acid, but had no significant effect on the contents of soluble solids, titratable acidity and fruit surface color. These results suggested that preharvest spraying with C. laurentii might be a promising alternative to fungicide application for decay control of strawberry.  相似文献

Infectivity and effects on host of a long-term stored aqueous suspension of Paranosema locustae on juveniles of Dichroplus maculipennis, a pest grasshopper in parts of the Pampas and Patagonia, were evaluated. Infections developed in 90–97.8% of treated individuals. Mortality increased with time, reaching highest values at 30–40 days post-inoculation (79.5–100%). Abstract There are arguments against the conclusion drawn by Haselwandter and Ebner that fungal spores have survived for some 5300 years on hay padding in the leather boots of frozen body discovered in the Austrian Alps. According to cryobiological experience, long-term survival of fungal spores is very unlikely at temperatures fluctuating between zero and −40°C. It is quite possible that living spores of these common species have recently reached this substratum.  相似文献

A field trial was conducted using an oil formulation of the entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium flavoviride Gams & Rozyspal (Deuteromycotina: Hyphomycetes), to control the variegated grasshopper, Zonocerus variegatus L. (Orthoptera: Pyrgomorphidae). The influence of dispersal and secondary pick-up from the spray residue on mortality was assessed by sampling insects from the treated plots at intervals and monitoring disease levels during subsequent incubation in the laboratory. The cumulative mortality curves showed the pathogen to be highly effective, even in samples taken 8 days after spraying. A model was developed to link the influence of mortality, incubation, secondary pick-up of spores and insect dispersal, on the shape of these cumulative mortality curves. The model proved useful for data received from an experiment using small plot sizes, where insect dispersal is a big problem. The spray residue had an important influence on overall insect mortality. The model also indicated a difference in speed of kill between field and laboratory samples, suggesting an incubation delay in the field.  相似文献

During the first 96 h of culture, germinating spores of the fern Sphaeropteris cooperi (F. v. Muell.) Tryon showed a gradual rise in respiratory activity to a maximum of about 6.5 μl 02 h−1 mg−1 dry wt. This was followed by a transitory decline in rate, concluded by a second respiratory rise preceding the emergence of the rhizoid after 192 h of culture. Oxygen uptake during the first 120 h of germination was insensitive to 1 m M potassium cyanide (KCN) but was inhibited by 1 m M salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM); however, beyond this time cyanide showed increasing inhibitory effectiveness whereas SHAM became less effective. Regardless of time of application, KCN had no effect on germination. Maximum inhibition of germination by SHAM was achieved if applied up to 120 h after culture initiation, after which spores became insensitive to SHAM. Heat treatment (50°C for 90 min) during the cyanide-resistant phase of respiration (0 h–120 h) induced cyanide-sensitive respiration and completely inhibited spore germination. Elevated temperatures had little effect if applied during the cyanide-sensitive phase (beyond 120 h). Temperature inhibited spores regained their ability to germinate if maintained in culture until the cyanide-resistant pathway was restored and then subjected to a second photoinductive light treatment. These results suggest the presence and possible involvement of the cyanide-resistant, alternative respiratory pathway during germination of Sphaeropteris cooperi spores.  相似文献

The effect of visible light on carotenoid content in the dermatophyte Trichophyton mentagrophytes ATCC 26323 was investigated. The fungus T. mentagrophytes accumulated several carotenoids when arthroconidiated on Sabouraud glucose agar at 37°C. When this fungus was irradiated with moderate fluence rates of white light, the resultant arthroconidia contained considerably less carotenoids in comparison with dark controls although growth and arthroconidiation of this fungus were not at all affected by visible light. The reduction of carotenoid content in arthroconidia was due primarily to blue light, although red light caused a slight decrease in pigmentation. The suppressive effect of visible light on pigmentation was fluence rate dependent. Carotenoid accumulation in arthroconidia was inversely and exponentially related to the fluence rate of light. Carotenoid formation in arthroconidiating T. mentagrophytes was neither photoinducible nor photostimulative. An analysis of isolated carotenoids revealed that visible light caused a quantitative reduction in pigmentation, and no single carotenoid was selectively decreased.Non-standard abbreviations PI pigmentation index - r coefficient of correlation  相似文献
