Regression models for correlated categorical data are presented in which the covariance is a function of measured effects. The regression and covariance parameters are estimated by extended least square methods. A numerical example of a clinical trial comparing two antiemetic treatment regimes for patients receiving chemotherapy is given to illustrate the approach.  相似文献

Plant responses to saturation vapour pressure deficit (SVPD) were studied by subjecting black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill) B.S.P.] and jack pine seedlings (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) to humid (0.3 – 0.8 kPa) or dry (2.0 – 2.5 kPa SVPD) regimes for 4 weeks using a computer-controlled environmental system to control diurnal variation in SVPD. Dry matter accumulation in needles was not altered by increasing SVPD. However, root growth declined by 60% which increased shoot to root ratio and reduced total seedling dry weight in both black spruce and jack pine. Relative growth rate of jack pine also declined to about half the rate of plants grown under humid conditions. In situ root marking studies showed that the decline in root growth of jack pine under the high SVPD was the result of reduced lateral root initiation, whereas root elongation was unaffected by humidity. A 4-week exposure to dry air increased abscisic acid (ABA) levels in needles, but not roots, of jack pine whereas ABA levels in black spruce were not altered. A short (3-day) exposure failed to increase needle ABA levels in either species. These results suggest that the responses of conifers to dry air were not the result of ABA accumulation. Abstract. A system is described whereby seedling development can be analysed in terms of growth rates of specific 1 mm regions of the hypocotyl. The technique involves time-lapse photography of marked hypocotyls in a specially designed chamber which accommodates seedlings in various orientations with respect to gravity, and under irradiation regimes differing in light quality, quantity and direction. The results of a preliminary study of the upward growth of etiolated or green cress seedlings in darkness or overhead while light are reported. Highest growth rates in etiolated seedlings were observed in zones in the upper one-third of ihe hypocotyl. In green seedlings, growth was more prominent within the subapical zones. Light further restricted growth of the median and basal zones in both types of seedling. However, in their immediate responses to the onset of irradiation, green and etiolated seedlings differed markedly. In etiolated seedlings, recovery of growth at the apex was accompanied by the development of inhibition in the median-basal regions; green seedlings showed a transient inhibition of growth in the apical zone together with a strong immediate inhibition in the median-basal regions.  相似文献

1. Generalist herbivores feed on a wide and diverse set of species, but fine‐scale foraging patterns may be affected by the interplay between the quality, quantity and spatial distribution of host plants. 2. The foraging patterns of a prevalent Neotropical herbivore, the leaf‐cutter ant Atta laevigata, in the Brazilian Cerrado savannas were examined in order to determine if patterns observed are in concert with central‐place foraging predictions. 3. The results showed that A. laevigata acts as a polyphagous but highly selective herbivore, with ant attacks often resulting in partial defoliation of less‐preferred species and full defoliation of preferred ones. It was found, for the first time, that there is a strong and positive relationship between the relative attack frequency on plants from preferred species and foraging distance to the nest. This suggests a balance between the quality of plant resources harvested and costs involved in their transportation. It was also observed that colonies focused their harvest on preferred species in months with low availability of young leaves. Consequently, high herbivory rate was more frequent in plants attacked far away from the nest and in dry months. 4. These assessments highlight the fact that Atta colonies may become more selective as foraging distance to the nest increases and in response to fluctuations in the availability of palatable resources throughout the year. The results also show some dissimilarities in the foraging behaviours of A. laevigata when compared with other locations, suggesting that widely distributed herbivores may modify foraging strategies across their geographic range.  相似文献

The effects of adrenergic-stimulation upon the oxygen-binding capacity of fish erythrocytes have been investigated. The oxygen capacity of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), erythrocytes was lowered by 44% on extracellular acidification (the so-called 'Root effect'). Addition of isoproterenol at 20° Ccaused an acid shift of the curve relating oxygen capacity to pH0 by approximately 0.2 pH units, a value which was similar to the change in intracellular pH caused by adrenergic stimulation (Cossins & Kilbey Journal of Experimental Biology , 148 , 303–312, 1990). Moreover, when plotted as a function of pHi, the curves for control and adrenalinstimulated erythrocytes were superimposable suggesting that the adrenergic shift in the Root curve was a result of the change in pHi caused by activation of the adrenergic Na+/H+ exchanger.
A similarly large adrenergic shift in the Root curve was observed for pike, Esox lucius L., erythrocytes, though not for erythrocytes of carp, Cyprinus carpio L., and tench, Tinea tinea (L.). The pH for the mid-point of the Root effect in pike erythrocytes was distinctly more acid than for trout, but in both cases corresponded closely with the optimal pH for the adrenergic Na+/H+ exchange mechanism. This suggests a link between the functional characteristics of the exchanger and the oxygen-binding properties of haemoglobin.  相似文献

Ascaris lumbricoides and Ascaris suum are two closely related parasites that infect humans and pigs. The zoonotic potential of A. suum has been a matter of debate for decades. Here we sought to investigate the potential human infection by A. suum and its immunological alterations. We orally infected five healthy human subjects with eggs embraced by A. suum. The infection was monitored for symptoms and possible respiratory changes, by an interdisciplinary health team. Parasitological, hematological analyses, serum immunoglobulin, cytokine profiles, and gene expression were evaluated during the infection. Our results show that A. suum is able to infect and complete the cycle in humans causing A. lumbricoides similar symptoms, including, cough, headache, diarrhea, respiratory discomfort and chest x-ray alterations coinciding with larvae migration in the lungs. We also observed activation of the immune system with production of IgM and IgG and a Th2/Th17 response with downregulation of genes related to Th1 and apoptosis. PCA (Principal componts analysis) show that infection with A. suum leads to a change in the immune landscape of the human host. Our data reinforce the zoonotic capacity of A. suum and bring a new perspective on the understanding of the immune response against this parasite.  相似文献
