There is a diverse range of microbiological challenges facing the food, healthcare and clinical sectors. The increasing and pervasive resistance to broad‐spectrum antibiotics and health‐related concerns with many biocidal agents drives research for novel and complementary antimicrobial approaches. Biofilms display increased mechanical and antimicrobial stability and are the subject of extensive research. Cold plasmas (CP) have rapidly evolved as a technology for microbial decontamination, wound healing and cancer treatment, owing to the chemical and bio‐active radicals generated known collectively as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. This review outlines the basics of CP technology and discusses the interactions with a range of microbiological targets. Advances in mechanistic insights are presented and applications to food and clinical issues are discussed. The possibility of tailoring CP to control specific microbiological challenges is apparent. This review focuses on microbiological issues in relation to food‐ and healthcare‐associated human infections, the role of CP in their elimination and the current status of plasma mechanisms of action.  相似文献

The signaling role of action potential (AP) in higher plants is considered. The principles underlying realization of this role and the significance of AP-induced short-term effector response are discussed. This opinion piece offers a commentary on the four papers that address the theme of the development of self and other understanding with a view to highlighting the important contribution of developmental research to understanding of mechanisms of social cognition. We discuss potential mechanisms linking self–other distinction and empathy, implications for grouping motor, affective and cognitive domains under a single mechanism, applications of these accounts for joint action and finally consider self–other distinction in group versus dyadic settings.  相似文献

Phenylephrine in the presence of 1-methyl-3-isobutylxanthine and propanolol caused a 40–50% inhibition of pyruvate kinase (type L) activity in isolated hepatocytes, which was accompanied by a 2–3-fold increase in the phosphate content of the enzyme. These changes were blocked by the α-adrenergic antagonist dihydroergocryptine and could not be accounted for by the slight increase in cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase activity generated by the α-adrenergic agonist. It is concluded that a significant component of the inhibition of hepatic pyruvate kinase mediated by α-adrenergic agonists can be attributed to a cyclic AMP-independent alteration in the phosphorylation state of the enzyme.  相似文献

An investigation on cell cultures obtained from temporal human bone fragments showed that they provide a suitable model for studying the mechanism involved in calcitonin action on bone cells. Furthermore they demonstrated: a transitory increase in 45Ca uptake that returned to control values ten minutes after the hormone was added; a relation between 45Ca uptake and increased cAMP concentrations when these were measured at the same time intervals; a reproduction of the salmon calcitonin (sCT) effect after incubation of the cultures with either db-cAMP or db-cGMP and inhibition of 45Ca uptake and parallel decrease in cAMP levels with propanol. These results suggest that in human bone cell cultures, sCT acts as a temporary promoter of 45Ca uptake, probably by activating an adenylate-cyclase system through a beta-receptor.  相似文献

Endopolygalacturonase of Aspergillus sp. was immobilized by three different methods; viz. (a) via amino groups, (b) via carboxyl groups and (c) by means of epoxy groups to a nonporous microparticular silicon dioxide (Cabosil), functionalized by 3-(amino)-propyl groups and 3-(2',3'-epoxypropoxy)-propyl groups, respectively. The conjugates were compared in their mode of action with corresponding immobilized preparations based on microporous ceramics. The binding via amino groups and via carboxyl groups lead, by itself, to changes in the mode of action of the enzyme, consisting of a decrease in randomness of glycosidic linkage splitting. The changes were greater in microporous support conjugates due to additional size-exclusion effects. The action pattern of endopolygalacturonase bound by means of epoxy groups was modulated exclusively by the porosity of the support, whereas the binding alone did not play any role.  相似文献

The electrogenic action of the basic amino acid, l-arginine, has been compared with the action of the neutral amino acids, l-alanine and glycine, in mouse pancreatic acinar cells. All three amino acids cause membrane depolarization, but while the reversal potential for the action of the neutral amino acids is close to the calculated value of the Na equilibrium potential (+30 m V) the reversal potential for the l-arginine effects is +7 m V. The neutral amino acids exhibit mutual inhibition, but l-arginine did not inhibit the l-alanine-or glycine-evoked depolarization nor did the neutral amino acids inhibit the action of l-arginine. While l-alanine markedly depressed acetylcholine-evoked depolarization, l-arginine had no such effect. It is concluded that there are at least two quite different types of electrogenic amino acid action in pancreatic acinar cells.  相似文献

The resting oxygen consumption     , postprandial and post-exercise peak oxygen consumption     of 137 juvenile southern catfish Silurus meridionalis , weighing 18·5 ± 0·8 g (mean ± s . d .), were measured at 25° C to determine whether     is positively related to postprandial and post-exercise     in sedentary S. meridionalis . In addition, postprandial metabolic response [ i.e. the specific dynamic action (SDA)] after a satiating meal and the growth performance as a consequence of a 3 week feeding-growth trail were measured in 40 S. meridionalis , weighing 14·3 ± 0·2 g, at 25° C to determine whether postprandial     is positively related to growth rate. Postprandial     was positively correlated with     , while post-exercise     was not. Both postprandial     and post-exercise     were positively correlated with factorial and absolute scope. There was no significant correlation between the growth rate and postprandial     in S. meridionalis . It suggested that as a sit-and-wait forager with low     , low post-exercise     and high postprandial     , the expenditure of energy for maintenance in S. meridionalis may be more closely related to digestive processes than locomotor activities.  相似文献

Pratylenchus vulnus (L₃, L₄, adults) are attracted to the roots of growing bean seedlings. The attraction is inhibited by treating the nematodes with solutions of carbofuran or phenamiphos at concentrations below those necessary to inhibit motility and dispersion. Nematicide treatments of plants without treatment of nematodes are ineffectual because nematodes are attracted equally well to treated and untreated seedlings.  相似文献

Bacillus thuringiensis is a Gram‐positive aerobic bacterium that produces insecticidal crystalline inclusions during sporulation phases of the mother cell. The virulence factor, known as parasporal crystals, is composed of Cry and Cyt toxins. Most Cry toxins display a common 3‐domain topology. Cry toxins exert intoxication through toxin activation, receptor binding and pore formation in a suitable larval gut environment. The mosquitocidal toxins of Bt subsp. israelensis (Bti) were found to be highly active against mosquito larvae and are widely used for vector control. Bt subsp. jegathesan is another strain which possesses high potency against broad range of mosquito larvae. The present review summarizes characterized receptors for Cry toxins in mosquito larvae, and will also discuss the diversity and effects of 3‐D mosquitocidal Cry toxin and the ongoing research for Cry toxin mechanisms generated from investigations of lepidopteran and dipteran larvae.  相似文献
