Despite the nutritional value of Colophospermum mopane to browser's diets, there is still insufficient knowledge on the effect of browsers on concentrations of these trace elements. A field experiment was conducted in Musina Nature Reserve, Limpopo Province, South Africa, to determine the effect of pruning on the concentration of trace elements in mopane leaves. Samples were analysed for iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), boron (B), molybdenum (Mo), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cobalt (Co), fluoride (F) and selenium (Se) using the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry technique. The effect of pruning was tested using the two‐tailed t‐test: two‐sample assuming equal variance and two‐tailed Mann–Whitney U‐test. Results showed that the concentration of trace elements in the control and pruned trees varies slightly through the year. Fe, Mn, Mo, Cu, Zn and Se are higher during leaf flush, but declined as the leaves matured and aged. This study concluded that simulated browsing had no significant effect on the concentration of trace elements in the mopane leaves. Seasonal variation in the amount of trace elements has implications on the distribution of browsers in the mopane woodland.  相似文献

Summary A field test was established in 1987 to evaluate the growth of micropropagated black cherry plantlets and control seedlings. The study also evaluated effects of two container types on initial survival and growth and of pruning on stem form and growth. At the time of field establishment, plantlets had more extensive root systems than the control seedlings. Survival and height growth were not influenced by container size. Through the first three growing seasons, seedlings were larger than micropropagated plants, but growth differences diminished in the fourth through sixth seasons. Pruning increased the length of clear stem by nearly five-fold but adversely affected diameter growth. Although all clones were from ortet trees more than 50 yr old, none showed plagiotropic growth. Six-year results showed that in a well-prepared and maintained plantation, black cherry trees derived from tissue culture can have at least 80% survival, and growth rates in excess of 1 m per year.  相似文献

Background and Aims Examination of plant growth below ground is relatively scant compared with that above ground, and is needed to understand whole-plant responses to the environment. This study examines whether the seasonal timing of fine root growth and the spatial distribution of this growth through the soil profile varies in response to canopy manipulation and soil temperature.Methods Plasticity in the seasonal timing and vertical distribution of root production in response to canopy and soil water manipulation was analysed in field-grown walnut (Juglans regia ‘Chandler’) using minirhizotron techniques.Key Results Root production in walnuts followed a unimodal curve, with one marked flush of root growth starting in mid-May, with a peak in mid-June. Root production declined later in the season, corresponding to increased soil temperature, as well as to the period of major carbohydrate allocation to reproduction. Canopy and soil moisture manipulation did not influence the timing of root production, but did influence the vertical distribution of roots through the soil profile. Water deficit appeared to promote root production in deeper soil layers for mining soil water. Canopy removal appeared to promote shallow root production.Conclusions The findings of this study add to growing evidence that root growth in many ecosystems follows a unimodal curve with one marked flush of root growth in coordination with the initial leaf flush of the season. Root vertical distribution appeared to have greater plasticity than timing of root production in this system, with temperature and/or carbohydrate competition constraining the timing of root growth. Effects on root distribution can have serious impacts on trees, with shallow rooting having negative impacts in years with limited soil water or positive impacts in years with wet springs, and deep rooting having positive impacts on soil water mining from deeper soil layers but negative impacts in years with wet springs.  相似文献

This is the second report of a series paper, which reports molecular mechanisms underlying the occurrence of pruning spine phase after rapid spinogenesis phase in neonates and young infant in the primate brain. We performed microarray analysis between the peak of spine numbers [postnatal 3 months (M)] and spine pruning (postnatal 6 M) in prefrontal, inferior temporal, and primary visual cortices of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). The pruning phase is not clearly defined in rodents but is in primates including the marmoset. The differentially expressed genes between 3 M and 6 M in all three cortical areas were selected by two-way analysis of variance. The list of selected genes was analyzed by canonical pathway analysis using “Ingenuity Pathway Analysis of complex omics data” (IPA; Ingenuity Systems, Qiagen, Hilden, Germany). In this report, we discuss these lists of genes for the glutamate receptor system, G-protein-coupled neuromodulator system, protector of normal tissue and mitochondria, and reelin. (1) Glutamate is a common neurotransmitter. Its receptors AMPA1, GRIK1, and their scaffold protein DLG4 decreased as spine numbers decreased. Instead, GRIN3 (NMDA receptor) increased, suggesting that strong NMDA excitatory currents may be required for a single neuron to receive sufficient net synaptic activity in order to compensate for the decrease in synapse. (2) Most of the G protein-coupled receptor genes (e.g., ADRA1D, HTR2A, HTR4, and DRD1) in the selected list were upregulated at 6 M. The downstream gene ROCK2 in these receptor systems plays a role of decreasing synapses, and ROCK2 decreased at 6 M. (3) Synaptic phagosytosis by microglia with complement and other cytokines could cause damage to normal tissue and mitochondria. SOD1, XIAP, CD46, and CD55, which play protective roles in normal tissue and mitochondria, showed higher expression at 6 M than at 3 M, suggesting that normal brain tissue is more protected at 6 M. (4) Reelin has an important role in cortical layer formation. In addition, RELN and three different pathways of reelin were expressed at 6 M, suggesting that new synapse formation decreased at that age. Moreover, if new synapses were formed, their positions were free and probably dependent on activity.  相似文献

The synapse number and the related dendritic spine number in the cerebral cortex of primates shows a rapid increase after birth. Depending on the brain region and species, the number of synapses reaches a peak before adulthood, and pruning takes place after this peak (overshoot-type synaptic formation). Human mental disorders, such as autism and schizophrenia, are hypothesized to be a result of either too weak or excessive pruning after the peak is reached. Thus, it is important to study the molecular mechanisms underlying overshoot-type synaptic formation, particularly the pruning phase.  相似文献

 Three-year-old Eucalyptus nitens (Deane and Maiden) Maiden trees and 1-year-old ramets of a single clone of E. nitens were pruned to remove 0, 50% or 70% of the green crown length. This was equivalent to removal of 0, 55% or 88% of foliage area of trees, and 0, 77% or 94% of foliage area of ramets. CO2 assimilation (A) and stomatal conductance (gs) were measured at constant illumination in five height zones and three foliage-age classes of trees over a 16-month period following pruning. Foliar nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations were determined for each measurement time during the first 12 months of the experiment. In ramets A and gs were measured in four height zones and two foliage-age classes over a six-week period, and N and P concentrations were measured only once, at the end of the experiment. Rates of A increased by up to 175% following pruning. This response occurred throughout the canopy irrespective of position in the crown or foliage age. The magnitude of the response was generally greater in ramets than in trees, and increased with increasing severity of pruning. The initiation of the response was later, and the duration of the response was longer, in trees than ramets. In the lower crown of trees there was evidence of delayed senescence following pruning. Photosynthetic enhancement was not related to changes in foliar N concentrations. The ratio of A/N increased in many zones following pruning, especially after more severe defoliation. There was no evidence that changes in P concentrations were responsible for the result. The increases in A may have been related to changes in gs, as maximum values of gs were greater, and the ratio of A/gs was generally lower, in pruned than unpruned plants. 以2年生龙脑型阴香Cinnamomum burmannii chvar. Borneol幼林为研究对象,开展截顶采收技术试验,试验设置4个截顶高度,每个截顶高度内又采用3种下部枝条处理模式。通过对2个年度3次调查数据进行分析,结果表明树高、地径、冠幅和可蒸生物量4个性状不同区组间本底差异不大,处理后4个性状不同处理间差异显著加大,且均达极显著水平;多重比较也从本底的2个DUNNCAN分组提升至3~4个分组,且可以看出随着截干高度的提升,4个性状指标逐渐提升;在留枝方面,保留枝条越少,4个性状指标数值越小。因此,采收以120 cm高度截顶后保留下部枝条(H4-T1组合)为最佳处理。  相似文献

Biomass of olive tree pruning can be considered a suitable raw material for the production of ethanol due to its high content of potentially fermentable carbohydrates. However its high extractives content could cause condensation reactions between extractives and acid insoluble lignin during pretreatment, hindering the enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated material. In this work, the effect of extractives removal before steam explosion of olive tree pruning was evaluated. The objectives are to recover as much glucose as possible in the extraction stage and to avoid the condensation reactions. The effect of temperature and time of water extracted material on sugars recovery was studied using a response surface method according to a central composite design. Extractive removal previous to steam explosion resulted in 20% more total sugars recovery in comparison to a material without water extraction stage.  相似文献

研究了毛乌素沙地南缘水滨边丘间地和干旱丘顶两种生境下沙柳平茬后不同年限(1、2、3~4和5~6年)对沙柳叶片光合气体交换、水分利用效率、结构特性及氮、磷养分含量等叶功能特征的影响.结果表明:水滨边丘间地沙柳叶片的净光合速率、气孔导度、瞬时和长期水分利用效率均高于丘顶,但N、P养分含量低于丘顶;两种生境下沙柳的叶结构性状无显著差异.干旱生境下沙柳主要通过增加养分含量、降低光合和水分利用来生存.随平茬年限增加,叶片净光合速率和气孔导度显著下降,氮含量和瞬时水分利用效率亦呈下降趋势,且二者之间呈显著正相关;平茬后1年的叶面积最高,比叶质量和叶干物质含量最低,此后比叶质量增加,叶面积和干物质含量不变;叶结构性状与光合及养分特性之间无显著相关性.叶光合活性和氮含量的下降是沙柳随平茬年限增加而衰败的重要原因.  相似文献
