Abstract. Plant functional types are a necessary device for reducing the complex and often uncharted characteristics of species diversity in function and structure when attempting to project the nature and function of species assemblages into future environments. A workshop was held to review the current methods commonly used for defining plant functional types, either globally or for particular biomes, and to compare them with the field experiences of specialists for specific biomes of the world. The methods fall into either an objective and inductive approach or a subjective and deductive approach. When the different methods were tested, it was generally found that the classification for one site or environment was not wholly applicable to a different site or environment. However, the degree of change which is necessary for adjustment between environments may not prove to be a major limitation in the use of functional types.  相似文献

When spores of the fern,Pteris multifida, were aseptically cultured in the dark, sporophytic plants were apogamously induced. The plants have been subsequently grown in pots until the development of leaves with many sporangia for observations of meiotic characteristics in their sporocytes. The sporophytic plants originated from spores were estimated to be haploid, and the estimation was supported by abnormal meiosis in sporocytes and the absence of mature spores, but some chromosomes (n=58) formed bivalents in the meiotic process.  相似文献

Effective chemotherapy for solid cancers is challenging due to a limitation in permeation that prevents anticancer drugs from reaching the center of the tumor, therefore unable to limit cancer cell growth. To circumvent this issue, we planned to apply the drugs directly at the center by first collapsing the outer structure. For this, we focused on cell–cell communication (CCC) between N-glycans and proteins at the tumor cell surface. Mature N-glycans establish CCC; however, CCC is hindered when numerous immature N-glycans are present at the cell surface. Inhibition of Golgi mannosidases (GMs) results in the transport of immature N-glycans to the cell surface. This can be employed to disrupt CCC. Here, we describe the molecular design and synthesis of an improved GM inhibitor with a non-sugar mimic scaffold that was screened from a compound library. The synthesized compounds were tested for enzyme inhibition ability and inhibition of spheroid formation using cell-based methods. Most of the compounds designed and synthesized exhibited GM inhibition at the cellular level. Of those, AR524 had higher inhibitory activity than a known GM inhibitor, kifunensine. Moreover, AR524 inhibited spheroid formation of human malignant cells at low concentration (10 µM), based on the disruption of CCC by GM inhibition.  相似文献

The effect of the alkyl side-chain length on the structural and optoelectronic properties of poly[N-9′-heptadecanyl-27-carbazole-alt-55-(4′,7′-di-2-thienyl-2′,1′,3′-benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT) conjugated oligomers have been studied by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The study was carried out by varying the length of alkyl side-chain attached to the nitrogen atom of the carbazole unit of the PCDTBT oligomers. The structural properties of the optimised oligomers were then studied by determining the bond-length alternation and dihedral angles (Φ) for various side-chain lengths. Total energy calculations for the determination of HOMO energy (EHOMO), LUMO energy (ELUMO), and fundamental energy gap (EGap) were performed using DFT at the B3LYP/6-31G(d), while the first singlet excitation energies (EOpt) were calculated by TD-DFT also at the same level of theory. It was observed that there are no significant structural changes occurring as the alkyl chain lengths are varied. For the electronic properties, very small differences (i.e. ~0.01 eV) were observed for EGap and EOpt while the exciton binding energies (EB) were virtually the same. The results suggest that using shorter alkyl side-chains do not significantly affect the structural and optoelectronic properties of the carbazole-benzothiadiazole based polymer. The observations can aid future computational design studies of analogous systems by reducing large structures thus decreasing computational costs.  相似文献

Little is known about the simultaneous effects of drought stress and plant resistance on herbivorous insects. By subjecting the green peach aphid Myzus persicae Sulzer to well‐watered and drought‐stressed plants of both susceptible and resistant peach (Prunus persica), the effects of both stressors on aphid performance and proteomics are tested. Overall, the influence of the water treatment on aphid performance is less pronounced than the effect of host plant genetic resistance. On the susceptible cultivar, aphid survival, host acceptance and ability to colonize the plant do not depend on water treatment. On the resistant cultivar, aphid survival and ability to colonize are higher on drought‐stressed than on well‐watered plants. A study examining the pattern of protein expression aiming to explain the variation in aphid performance finds higher protein expression in aphids on the drought‐stressed susceptible cultivars compared with the well‐watered ones. In the susceptible cultivar, the regulated proteins are related to energy metabolism and exoskeleton functionality, whereas, in the resistant cultivar, the proteins are involved with the cytoskeleton. Comparison of the protein expression ratios for resistant versus susceptible plants reveals that four proteins are down‐regulated in well‐watered plants and 15 proteins are down‐regulated in drought‐stressed plants. Drought stress applied to the susceptible cultivar induces the regulation of proteins in M. persicae that enable physiological adaptation to maintain an almost unaltered aphid performance. By contrast, for aphids on the resistant cultivar subjected to drought stress, the down‐regulation of proteins responds to an induced host susceptibility effect.  相似文献

Plant phototoxins are broad-spectrum biocides which adversely affect an array of potential plant enemies, including among others disease-causing pathogens, nematodes, insect herbivores, and competing plant species. Thus far, plants which contain these broad-spectrum allelochemicals have been found to occur in open habitats (i.e., in full sunlight) where a defensive mechanism mediated by light would seem to operate most effectively. The levels of available light in shaded environments, although considerably lower than full sun (1–10% of full sun), are equivalent to the intensities of light used to kill phototoxin-treated insects in laboratory studies. This suggests that phototoxic reactions might mediate important organismal interactions in shaded environments as well. In this study, more than 230 Costa Rican rainforest plants were bioassayed for phototoxic metabolites in an effort to ascertain their prevalence among plants growing in moderate to extreme shade. Microbial bioassays, employing Bacillus cereus (a gram positive bacterium), Escherichia coli (a gram negative bacterium), and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (a yeast) were used to rapidly and sensitively indicate phototoxic action and potential for insecticidal action. Tissue extracts from 12 plant families tested positive for phototoxins. This is the first report of phototoxins occurring in eight of those families (Acanthaceae, Campanulaceae, Gesnariaceae, Loganiaceae, Malpigaceae, Phytolaccaceae, Piperaceae, and Sapotaceae). The presence of phototoxins in rainforest plants suggests that phototoxic plant allelochemicals may function as important defenses in low-light, as well as high-light, environments.  相似文献

Based on their developmental patterns, the bony tentorium (BT) and bony falx (BF) of mammals can be classified into two types, the carnivoran type and the dolphin type. The former develops as part of the skull bones during the fetal period and is already completed at birth, while the latter is gradually formed by ossification in the tentorium cerebelli (TC) and falx cerebri (FC) during the course of aging.   • Intraspecific trait variation (ITV; i.e. variability in mean and/or distribution of plant attribute values within species) can occur in response to multiple drivers. Environmental change and land‐use legacies could directly alter trait values within species but could also affect them indirectly through changes in vegetation cover. Increasing variability in environmental conditions could lead to more ITV, but responses might differ among species. Disentangling these drivers on ITV is necessary to accurately predict plant community responses to global change.
  • We planted herb communities into forest soils with and without a recent history of agriculture. Soils were collected across temperate European regions, while the 15 selected herb species had different colonizing abilities and affinities to forest habitat. These mesocosms (384) were exposed to two‐level full‐factorial treatments of warming, nitrogen addition and illumination. We measured plant height and specific leaf area (SLA).
  • For the majority of species, mean plant height increased as vegetation cover increased in response to light addition, warming and agricultural legacy. The coefficient of variation (CV) for height was larger in fast‐colonizing species. Mean SLA for vernal species increased with warming, while light addition generally decreased mean SLA for shade‐tolerant species. Interactions between treatments were not important predictors.
  • Environmental change treatments influenced ITV, either via increasing vegetation cover or by affecting trait values directly. Species’ ITV was individualistic, i.e. species responded to different single resource and condition manipulations that benefited their growth in the short term. These individual responses could be important for altered community organization after a prolonged period.

The 231-residue capsid (CA) protein of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) spontaneously self-assembles into tubes with a hexagonal lattice that is believed to mimic the surface lattice of conical capsid cores within intact virions. We report the results of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on HIV-1 CA tubes that provide new information regarding changes in molecular structure that accompany CA self-assembly, local dynamics within CA tubes, and possible mechanisms for the generation of lattice curvature. This information is contained in site-specific assignments of signals in two- and three-dimensional solid-state NMR spectra, conformation-dependent 15N and 13C NMR chemical shifts, detection of highly dynamic residues under solution NMR conditions, measurements of local variations in transverse spin relaxation rates of amide 1H nuclei, and quantitative measurements of site-specific 15N–15N dipole–dipole couplings. Our data show that most of the CA sequence is conformationally ordered and relatively rigid in tubular assemblies and that structures of the N-terminal domain (NTD) and the C-terminal domain (CTD) observed in solution are largely retained. However, specific segments, including the N-terminal β-hairpin, the cyclophilin A binding loop, the inter-domain linker, segments involved in intermolecular NTD–CTD interactions, and the C-terminal tail, have substantial static or dynamical disorder in tubular assemblies. Other segments, including the 310-helical segment in CTD, undergo clear conformational changes. Structural variations associated with curvature of the CA lattice appear to be localized in the inter-domain linker and intermolecular NTD–CTD interface, while structural variations within NTD hexamers, around local 3-fold symmetry axes, and in CTD–CTD dimerization interfaces are less significant.  相似文献
