To preserve biodiversity, identifying at‐risk populations and developing conservation plans to mitigate the effects of human‐induced rapid environmental change (HIREC) are essential. Changes in diet, especially for food‐limited species, can aid in detecting populations being impacted by HIREC, and characterizing the quality, abundance, and temporal and spatial consistency of newly consumed food items may provide insight concerning the likelihood of a species persisting in a changing environment. We used Wood Storks (Mycteria americana) nesting in the Florida Everglades as a model system to study the possible effects of HIREC on a food‐limited population. We compared the diets of Wood Storks in 2013 and 2014 with those reported during the 1970s before major anthropogenic activities affected the Everglades system and prey availability. Wood Storks in our study consumed more large‐bodied sunfish species (Lepomis spp.), fewer native marsh fishes, and more non‐native fish species than during the 1970s. Large sunfish and non‐native fish are relatively rare in the drying pools of Everglades marshes where storks traditionally forage, suggesting that Wood Storks may be using novel foraging habitats such as created wetlands (i.e., canals and stormwater ponds). Although created wetlands have long hydroperiods conducive to maintaining large‐bodied fishes and could provide alternative foraging habitat when prey availability is reduced in natural marshes, additional studies are needed to determine the extent to which these wetlands are used by Wood Storks and, importantly, the quality of prey items potentially available to foraging Wood Storks in created wetlands.  相似文献

Rhizobial symbiosis is known to increase the nitrogen availability in the rhizosphere of legumes. Therefore, it has been hypothesized that other plants’ roots should forage towards legume neighbours, but avoid non-legume neighbours. Yet, root distribution responding to legume plants as opposed to non-legumes has not yet been rigorously tested and might well be subject to integration of multiple environmental cues.In this study, wedevised an outdoor mesocosm experiment to examine root distributions of the two plant species Pilosella officinarum and Arenaria serpyllifolia in a two-factorial design. While one factor was ‘neighbour identity’, where plants were exposed to different legume or non-legume neighbours, the other factor was ‘nitrogen supply’. In the latter the nutrient-poor soil was supplemented with either nitrogen-free or with nitrogen-containing fertilizer.Unexpectedly, of all treatments that included a legume neighbour (eight different species or factor combinations), we found merely one case of root aggregation towards a legume neighbour (P. officinarum towards Medicago minima under nitrogen-fertilized conditions). In this very treatment, also P. officinarum root–shoot allocation was strongly increased, indicating that neighbour recognition is coupled with a contesting strategy.Considering the various response modes of the tested species towards the different legume and non-legume neighbours, we can conclude that roots integrate information on neighbour identity and resource availability in a complex manner. Especially the integration of neighbour identity in root decisions must be a vital aptitude for plants to cope with their complex biotic and abiotic environment in the field.  相似文献

1. Time perception is seldom studied in invertebrates, with the limited experimental evidence being insufficient to provide a comprehensive pattern of the capacity of invertebrates to measure time and use it in decision‐making processes. 2. In this study, it was hypothesized that insect parasitoids have evolved the capacity to measure time precisely and to use it to optimize foraging decisions related to host exploitation. To examine time perception in females of the gregarious egg parasitoid Trichogramma euproctidis, the present study used their ability to adjust their investment (number of eggs laid) in a host to the initial transit duration (interval between the first contact with the host and the following contact with the substrate). Females utilize this method to assess host egg size, as a large egg necessarily requires more time to evaluate than a small host. In this study, the initial transit duration for a given sized egg was artificially extended by suspending it. 3. For similar sized hosts, female T. euproctidis significantly increased both oviposition duration and progeny allocation following a longer initial transit duration. 4. These results demonstrate the intrinsic capacity of this parasitoid to measure time and to adjust their progeny investment accordingly. This is believed to be one of the few demonstrations of a retrospective measure of time in an invertebrate.  相似文献

Substrate choice is one of the most important decisions thatsit-and-wait predators must make. Not only may it dictate theprey available but also the cover for the predator which mayconceal it from prey or its own predators. However, while ona particular substrate the behavior and use of that substratemay vary widely. When naïve, newly emerged crab spiderlingsMisumena vatia (Thomisidae) occupied flowering goldenrod Solidagocanadensis, their behavior differed markedly on inflorescenceswith relatively sparse and densely packed flower heads as wellas on experimentally thinned and unthinned inflorescences. Initially, the spiderlings most often hunted at the thinned sites and hidamong the dense flower heads at the unthinned sites, a differencethat disappeared in all broods tested after 2–3 h, possiblybecause of the growing hunger of the initially concealed individuals.Prey capture (dance flies) in the thinned sites initially significantlyexceeded that in unthinned sites but subsequently did not differ. However, spiderlings encountered their principal predator, thejumping spider Pelegrina insignis, significantly more oftenon unthinned than thinned inflorescences. Even though usagepatterns initially differed strikingly, spiderlings did notdiffer in their rates of quitting the two types of sites. Theseresults suggest a trade-off between foraging and predator avoidancethat changes in response to increasing hunger over time.  相似文献

Slug foraging paths recorded using time lapse video techniques under infra-red light were fitted to a correlated random walk model. Analyses were carried out on slugs in arenas where no food was present, as well as those containing commercial molluscicides at two rates of application. Slugs were found to search randomly in empty arenas and those containing commercial metaldehyde baits, but deviated from random search patterns when in the presence of commercial methiocarb bait. Differential attraction from a distance is suggested as a cause of these differences.  相似文献

The stereotyped pacing shown by the two Amur tigers in the Zurich Zoo was hypothesized as being caused by permanently frustrated appetitive foraging behavior. Several electrically controlled feeding boxes were installed and access to each box was possible only twice a day for 15 min at semi‐random times. The boxes had to be opened actively by the tigers. Two trials were carried out: one with solitary confinement, and one with paired confinement. During box feeding, the female's stereotyped pacing was significantly reduced from 16% (solitary confinement, conventional feeding) and 7% (paired confinement, conventional feeding) to 1% (solitary confinement) and less than 0.01% (paired confinement) of the daily observed time. The female's sleeping increased significantly in both solitary and paired confinement. The male only showed a significant reduction in stereotyped pacing behavior when kept with the female (conventional feeding: 10%; box feeding: <0.01% of the daily observed time). On days with a box‐feeding regime in paired confinement, the male spent 25% (83 min) of the observed time with active behavior at the feeding boxes. The results support the hypothesis that permanently frustrated appetitive foraging behavior causes stereotyped pacing in adult tigers. Zoo Biol 21:573–584, 2002. © 2002 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Plant-herbivore chemical signals and behavioral plasticity may enhance parasitoid host-foraging efficacy in the field; however, no studies have quantified the potential benefits from these factors under field-type conditions. The effect of plant-herbivore signals and learning on the foraging efficacy of Microplitis croceipes was quantified by directly observing and recording total and sequential duration of various foraging behaviors relative to 5 randomly placed herbivore-damaged and host-infested cotton plants and 20 undamaged and non-host-infested plants. Microplitis croceipes spent significantly more time searching (flying and antennation) on host infested versus uninfested plants. Antennation time was significantly and negatively correlated with successive host stings. Contrary to expectations of increased duration, flight time remained constant throughout the foraging bout, which may indicate that there was some learning associated with flight. These results suggest that plant-herbivore chemical signals and learning enhances the foraging efficacy of M. croceipes.  相似文献

Seasonal reproduction is common among mammals at all latitudes, even in the deep tropics. This paper (i) discusses the neuroendocrine pathways via which foraging conditions and predictive cues such as photoperiod enforce seasonality, (ii) considers the kinds of seasonal challenges mammals actually face in natural habitats, and (iii) uses the information thus generated to suggest how seasonal reproduction might be influenced by global climate change. Food availability and ambient temperature determine energy balance, and variation in energy balance is the ultimate cause of seasonal breeding in all mammals and the proximate cause in many. Photoperiodic cueing is common among long-lived mammals from the highest latitudes down to the mid-tropics. It is much less common in shorter lived mammals at all latitudes. An unknown predictive cue triggers reproduction in some desert and dry grassland species when it rains. The available information suggests that as our climate changes the small rodents of the world may adapt rather easily but the longer lived mammals whose reproduction is regulated by photoperiod may not do so well. A major gap in our knowledge concerns the tropics; that is where most species live and where we have the least understanding of how reproduction is regulated by environmental factors.  相似文献
