The reproductive behavior of six species of tenebrionid beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) was studied in the Namib Desert of southern Africa. In three species, males follow closely behind females (following behavior), while in the other three species, males mount females and remain clasped to them for extended periods (riding behavior). Following behavior occurs before and sometimes after copulation, while riding behavior occurs primarily after copulation. Males of all six species guard females from contesting males, although the effectiveness of guarding is greater in riding species. The evolution of the two male mating strategies does not appear to be related to operational sex ratio differences but, rather, to differential tendencies of females to remate. Variation in total pair duration within following and riding species may be attributed partly to species differences in operational sex ratio. However, pair durations are not affected by experimental manipulations of sex ratio in each species.  相似文献

Effects of ambient temperature on avian incubation behavior   总被引:6,自引:1,他引:5  
Ambient temperature is commonly thought to influence avian incubation behavior. However, results of empirical studies examining correlationsbetween ambient temperature and bout duration are equivocal.We propose that these equivocal results can be partly explainedby developing a conceptual understanding of how we should expecttemperature to influence incubation. We demonstrate why linearcorrelation analyses across a wide range of temperatures canbe inappropriate based on development of an incubation model for small birds that incorporates how ambient temperature influencesboth embryonic development and adult metabolism. We found supportfor predictions of the model using incubation data from orange-crownedwarblers (Vermivora celata) in Arizona. Both off- and on-boutduration were positively correlated with ambient temperaturebetween 9° and 26°C, but unrelated to ambient temperature<9° and 26-40°C. Bout durations declined as ambienttemperature approached or exceeded 40°C. Incubating orange-crowned warblers appeared to avoid bouts off the nest <7 min andbouts on the nest <20 min. Time of day, duration of theprevious bout, and variation among nests all explained variationin both on- and off-bout duration. Although we found supportfor the general shape of the incubation model, temperature still explained only a small portion of the overall variation in on-and off-bout duration. Results of previous studies were generallyconsistent with the model for off-bout duration; most studiesin colder environments reported positive correlations withtemperature, and the one negative correlation reported was from a hot environment. However, the relationships between on-boutduration and temperature reported in previous studies wereless consistent with our model and our data. Although somediscrepancies could be explained by considering our model,some studies reported negative correlations in cold environments.The effect of ambient temperature on duration of on-bouts probablydiffers among species based on the amount of fat reserves females typically carry during incubation and the extent of male incubationfeeding. Additional studies of the effects of temperature onavian incubation will help improve the general model and ultimatelyaid our understanding of energetic and ecological constraintson avian incubation.  相似文献

Among 400 Drosophila melanogaster flies individually analysed for nine gene–enzyme systems, a total of 160 different genotypes were found: 78 were repeatedly observed in two to 22 individuals, and 82 appeared only once. An increase in the frequency of rare alleles could be observed in such groups of genotypes that were less frequent. Among 24 most frequent genotypes (in 189 individuals) only four different combinations of five third-chromosomal genes are present, and 12 different combinations of three second-chromosomal genes. Among 82 unique genotypes these combinations were much more versatile: 29 at the third, 22 at the second, and three at the first chromosomes. The proportion of heterozygotes was increasing from most frequent toward unique genotypes (1.5–2.1 ± 0.1), primarily due to heterozygosity in five third-chromosomal loci (0.4–1.1 ± 0.06). When the number of genotypes in 100, 200, 300 and 400 sampled flies was extrapolated to larger samples, it became clear that this increase has an asymptotic character. It must be assumed that for our nine-loci model a total of approximately 200–220 different genotypes may exist in a population of a few thousands individuals, which means that adaptive variation for such a complex gene–enzyme system must be very much limited.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Developmental costs of rapid growth in terms of increased fluctuating asymmetry are expected to contribute to the widespread occurrence of growth rates below the physiological maximum, but have rarely been demonstrated. Here, these costs are studied for the first time in an invertebrate, the damselfly Lestes viridis , using a rearing experiment where early- and late-hatched larvae of both sexes were reared at decreasing or permanent water levels.
2. Late-hatched animals were more asymmetrical than early-hatched animals except for males in the drying treatment. Also, females were more asymmetrical than males except in early-hatched animals in the drying treatment.
3. The data presented suggest that in females but not in males treatment groups with higher growth rates have more asymmetrical wings. However, at the individual level no relationship between growth rate and asymmetry was present.
4. Possible reasons why the suggested trade-off between growth and developmental instability was not present at the individual level, and at the group level only in females, are discussed.  相似文献

Hypoxia strongly affects embryonic development during the pre-hatch period. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of oxygen supplementation (O) and a 38.5°C high temperature (HT) at high altitude (HA, 1720 m) on morphological traits during a pre-hatch period and on relative fluctuating asymmetry (relative FA) and allometric growth during an early post-hatch period in broilers. A total of 720 eggs were obtained from a 45-week-old Ross 308 broiler breeder flock raised at sea level (2 m). The eggs were divided into six incubation condition (IC) groups and were incubated at HA. O groups were exposed to 23.5% O2 for 1 h daily from either days 0 to 11 (O0–11), days 12 to 21 (O12–21) or days 18 to 21 (O18–21) of incubation. HT groups were exposed to 38.5°C daily from either days 12 to 21 (HT12–21) or days 18 to 21 (HT18–21) of incubation. A control was maintained at 37.8°C and 21% O2. The hatched chicks were raised for 6 days at HA. Embryo/chick and beak lengths and head diameter were measured during pre- and post-hatch periods. The face, middle toe and shank lengths were measured for each chick. The relative asymmetry (RA), mean RA (MRA) and allometric growth of the lengths were computed and the existence of FA was demonstrated. The IC significantly affected the embryo length, with embryos of the O0–11 group shorter than embryos of the other O groups. Chicks were longer in the O and HT groups than those in the control, except for the O0–11. We found significant interactions between the IC and each development period for beak length. During the post-hatch period, the head diameter of the O0-11 was significantly smaller than that of the other groups, but not in O12–21. The interactions among IC, age and sex were significant for the RA of the face and middle toe lengths and for MRA. All the examined bilateral traits were evaluated as allometric growth. The FA for bilateral traits was determined in both sexes. The right (R) – left (L) and IR-Ll were the lowest in females for face length and in males for shank length from the O18–21 and in males for middle toe length from the O0–11 and HT18–21 groups. Therefore, the effects of factors such as HT and O2 could mitigate the adverse effects of HA-induced hypoxia on optimal developmental stability of bilateral traits of broiler.  相似文献

Developmental stability, as measured by fluctuating asymmetry,has been purported to be an indicator of individual quality,and low asymmetry can be selected for by sexual selection processes.However, low asymmetry can also arise due to biomechanical constraintsoperating on trait design, as it is predicted that asymmetrywill decrease mechanical efficiency. Specifically, it has beenpredicted that wing length asymmetry will be negatively relatedto avian flight performance. To date, empirical investigationshave only studied the influence of increasing asymmetry beyondnaturally occurring average values. I examined the influenceof within-individual changes in primary feather developmentalstability on flight performance in European starlings by studyingasymmetry and flight before and after wing molt. Individualsthat exhibited a decrease in wing asymmetry through molt experiencedincreased aerodynamic performance in terms of both angle oftakeoff and level flapping-flight speed. Birds that increasedwing asymmetry suffered a decrease in flight performance. Takeoffspeed and the ability to negotiate an aerial obstacle coursewere unaffected by asymmetry. My data provide empirical supportfor the predicted influence of wing asymmetry on flight, eventhough the changes in asymmetry were very small (mean = 0.47%of trait size) and further indicate the importance of biomechanicalconsiderations in any study of developmental stability  相似文献

Abstrac  The composition of essential oil of Artemisia lerchiana Web. plants growing in Volgograd oblast was studied. Sampling was performed from plots contrasting in climatic and soil characteristics. Essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation. The content of essential oil in shoot biomass increased gradually during shoot formation, flower bud formation, and flowering beginning and then decreased. The highest content of essential oil varied from 1.1 to 1.5% of plant dry weight at the stage of flower bud formation. More than thirty compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The following major components were found: camphor, borneol, bornylacetate, camphene, and 1,8-cineole. Some of compounds (sesquiterpenes and sesquiterpenoids) were identified for the first time. The time-course of accumulation of essential oil components strongly depended on habitat edaphic factors and climatic conditions during the year of sampling.
