We describe the microdistribution of populations of Brown Trout (Salmo trutta L.) and of juvenile atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar L.) in the upstream part of the Scorff river (Brittany) at the end of summer. The Salmon population was composed of one age classe (0+) only while Trout age varied from 0+ to 3+ years, with a majority in age class 1+. Salmon density increased with current velocity (r = 0.99) and the nature of the substratum. A very favorable habitat for this species was characterized by reduced depth (< 23 cm), a high current velocity (61 cm s 1) and a stony substrate. The largest part of the population (74%) was localized in the centre of the running open water.A bank effect was particularly important for brown trout, irrespective of age (80.1%). The trout 0+ is absent from shallow rifles and its presence in the few deep running water areas (41 cm s–1) along the banks involved a spatial segregation with salmon 0+. The trout of one year and older were localized in deeper habitats (27 cm) with zero to medium current velocity (< 28 cm s–1). The bank effect was intensified by the presence of many overhangs along the bank.Among the secondary species, sculpin had the widest distribution, but Stone-loach and brook lamprey were the most abundant species and reached high densities in characteristic areas.

Sedimentation in fluvial and lacustrine environments
Rust  Brian R. 《Hydrobiologia》1982,91(1):59-70
Sedimentation in rivers is dominated by a complex set of physical processes, associated with the unidirectional flow of water. Variations in these processes give rise to different fluvial channel types, whose character can commonly be recognised in the ancient record. Chemical and biological processes are comparatively unimportant in fluvial sedimentation. In contrast, physical, chemical or biological processes can each dominate sedimentation in lakes. Physical (clastic) deposition dominates in high-latitude and mountain lakes (in which chemical and biological activity are low), and in lakes with high relief of the drainage basin and lake floor. Its variety reflects a range of processes influenced by river inflow, wave and current action, thermal and density effects. Economic benefits from the study of lake and river sedimentation include both resource and environmental aspects. An example is given of a mercury pollution study in a fluvial ecosystem. It shows that return to background levels can take place within a relatively short interval after cessation of pollutant input.

Typology of oligotrophic streams of the Ardenne (Belgium) by multivariate analysis of benthic diatoms records.During three years, samples of water and algae has been taken in 72 stations distributed on the river system of the northern part of the Ardennes. 357 taxa of diatoms have been identified. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis, applied to diatoms counts, allowed to classify the records in a table comparable to phytosociological tables. A continuum in the data is an indication of the progressive modification of the communities according to the physico-chemical characteristics of the water. Ten diatoms assemblages have been described and this typology has been compared to some algal associations defined in the literature. In natural environments, these 10 assemblages are strictly correlated with the nature of the geological substrate and the physico-chemical characteristics of the water. The sensibility of the oligotrophic streams is revealed by the speedy changes in the communities after following a small modification of the environmental factors (seasonal variations or light eutrophication).

Pattern of movements of adult Barbus haasi in a small Mediterranean stream
Most adult Barbus haasi , at a 1950 m-long site in Vallvidrera creek, were highly sedentary and resided within a home range <20 m (32 m2), while a small group were more mobile. On successive sampling occasions, between 52·3 and 64·9% of fish were recaptured in the same 10-m-long section in which they had previously been captured. Movements over long distances were infrequent, and only 5·6% of the fish moved >100 m. The movement pattern of the population was seasonally stable, although the mean distances were slightly greater in summer because of the medium-range movements of a few individuals. Overall, upstream and downstream movements were equally common but a significant downstream movement occurred in spring. The size of the fish did not influence the movement rate. Fish inhabiting those sections of the stream with greater depth, slower current and more cover had a lower movement rate than fish occupying shallower, exposed sections. The restricted movement of B. haasi could increase the survival of fish by increasing the probability of staying in the remaining pools during summer dry-out, and may therefore be of adaptive significance.

Aim We examined patterns of spatial and temporal diversification of the Amazonian endemic chestnut‐tailed antbird, Mymeciza hemimelaena (Thamnophilidae), to evaluate the diversification of a widespread avian taxon across rivers that potentially represent major natural barriers. Location Lowland Amazonia. Methods Sequences of the mitochondrial ND2 and cytochrome b genes were investigated from 65 individuals distributed throughout the entire range of M. hemimelaena, and including the two currently valid subspecies M. h. hemimelaena and M. h. pallens. Based on a combination of phylogeographic tools, molecular dating, and population genetic methods, we reconstructed a spatio‐temporal scenario of diversification of M. hemimelaena in the Amazon. Results The data revealed three genetically divergent and monophyletic groups in M. hemimelaena, which can also be distinguished by a combination of morphological and vocal characters. Two of these clades correspond to the previously described taxa M. h. hemimelaena and M. h. pallens, which are separated by the upper Madeira River, a main Amazonian tributary. The third clade is distributed between the middle reaches of the Madeira River and the much smaller tributaries Jiparaná and Aripuanã, and, although currently treated as M. h. pallens, clearly constitutes an independent evolutionary lineage probably deserving separate species status. Molecular clock and population genetic analyses indicate that diversification in this group occurred throughout the Pleistocene, with demographic fluctuations assumed for M. h. hemimelaena and M. h. pallens. Main conclusions The findings implicate rivers as barriers driving diversification in the M. hemimelaena complex. Levels of mitochondrial DNA divergence and associated morphological and vocal traits support its division into at least three separate species with comparatively small ranges. The existence of a previously unrecognized lineage in the M. hemimelaena complex, and the high degree of population structuring found in M. h. hemimelaena underscore the pervasiveness of cryptic endemism throughout Amazonia and the importance of DNA‐based taxonomic and phylogeographic studies in providing the accurate estimates of diversity that are essential for conservation planning.

While phytoplankton studies on large potamal rivers have increased in number in recent years, upper river sections have received considerably less attention. However, in order to better understand processes that govern the development of dominance of euplanktonic elements in the lower river sections, detailed studies of the upstream areas are necessary. We studied the composition, diversity and recruitment of the planktonic algal communities in the River Sajó and in its main tributary River Hernád, two characteristic rhithral river systems in Central Europe. Results revealed that diatoms are dominant elements of the phytoplankton in the upper river segments both in terms of taxa richness, and relative abundance. We found that composition of the phytoplankton showed the closest resemblance to that of benthic communities of soft substrates, highlighting the key role of riverbed characteristics in river phytoplankton recruitment. The occurrence of euplanktonic elements was not restricted to human impacted river segments, these taxa also occurred in pristine headwaters. Accordingly, planktonic algae potentially colonise small headwater streams naturally, although their dominance is expected to occur only at downstream reaches following impounded river segments. Diatom metrics used in ecological state assessment were calculated for the rithroplankton. These metrics fell in the range of values calculated for diatom flora on the hard substrates. However, the potential use of rithroplankton for quality assessment might be limited, because the high variability of index values at site level would result in misclassification of the ecological status.

The use of a multi-trophic assay strategy is now being encouraged in toxicological investigations which provides for rapid and sensitive tests. Such a strategy, a microcomputer-based algal fluorescence technique, was applied for the bioassessment of Lake St. Clair and St. Clair River ecosystems. The technique was found to be rapid, sensitive, and relatively inexpensive. In addition, it permitted microscopic examination of the impact of contaminants on individual cells/organisms, a feature which is not possible by other tests using radioisotopes and enzymes. The algal fluorescence technique appears to have a considerable potential for fast screening of large numbers of environmental samples.

1. Contemporary species distributions are determined by a mixture of ecological and historical filters acting on several spatial and temporal scales. Mediterranean climate areas are one of the world's biodiversity hotspots with a high level of endemicity, which is linked to complex ecological and historical factors. 2. This paper explores the ecological and historical factors constraining the distribution of caddisfly species on a large regional scale. A total of 69 taxa were collected from 140 sampling sites in 10 Iberian Mediterranean river basins. Approximately 74% of taxa can be considered rare, with the southern basins (the Baetic–Riffian region) having greater endemicity. The greatest richness, involving a mixture of northern and southern species, was found in the transitional area between the Baetic–Riffian region and the Hesperic Massif. 3. The historical processes occurring during the Tertiary (i.e. the junction of the Eurasian and African plates) explained 3.1% of species distribution, whereas ecological factors accounted for 20.7%. Only 0.3% was explained by the interaction of history and ecology. A set of multi‐scale ecological variables (i.e. basin, reach and bedform characteristics) defined five river types with specific caddisfly assemblages. The commonest caddisfly species accounted for the regional distribution pattern, while rare taxa contributed to the explanation of subtle patterns not shown by common species. 4. Despite the importance of historical factors for biogeography and the large scale used in our study, ecological variables better explained caddisfly distribution. This may be explained by the length of time since the historical process we are considering, the high dispersion and colonisation capacity of many caddisfly species, and the strong environmental gradient in the area. Because of the historical and environmental complexity of Mediterranean areas, rare taxa should be included in ecological studies so that the singularity of these ecosystems is not missed.
