- Highly biodiversity communities have been shown to better resist plant invasions through complementarity effects. Species richness (SR) is a widely used biodiversity metric but lacks explanatory power when there are only a few species. Communities with low SR can have a wide variety of phylogenetic diversities (PD), which might allow for a better prediction of invasibility.
- We assessed the effect of diversity reduction of a wetland community assemblage typical of the Beijing area on biotic resistance to invasion of the exotic weed Alternanthera philoxeroides and compared the reduction in SR and PD in predicting community invasibility.
- The eight studied resident species performed similarly when grown alone and when grown in eight‐species communities together with the invasive A. philoxeroides. Variation partitioning showed that PD contributed more to variation in both A. philoxeroides traits and community indicators than SR. All A. philoxeroides traits and community indicators, except for evenness index, showed a linear relationship with PD. However, only stem length of A. philoxeroides differed between the one‐ and two‐species treatments, and the diversity index of the communities differed between the one‐ and two‐species treatments and between the one‐ and four‐species treatments.
- Our results showed that in natural or semi‐natural wetlands with relatively low SR, PD may be a better predictor of invasibility than SR. When designing management strategies for mitigating A. philoxeroides invasion, deliberately raising PD is expected to be more efficient than simply increasing species number.

Abstract. Weed communities, comprising 12 introduced species at constant starting densities and three species already present in the seed bank, were followed through three years of continuous winter wheat. The wheat and weeds were subjected to two treatments in a split-plot factorial design, organic contrasting with conventional fertilizer, and ploughing plus hand-roguing contrasting with minimum tillage plus herbicide. The minimum tilled plots developed in a uniform manner, and became dominated by very high densities of Anisantha sterilis. Agrostemma githago and Galium aparine also persisted in these plots at lower densities. The ploughed plots had a lower total density but a greater range of species. Stellaria media, Veronica persica and Avena fatua were the most common; other species occurred at lower densities. The major effect of fertilizer treatment was a greater initial increase by G. aparine on the organic, minimum tilled plots compared with the conventionally fertilized, minimum tilled plots. Species associated with minimum tillage were annuals with either no or a short term seed bank and autumn germination and rather predictable dynamics, whereas species that did well under ploughing were either spring germinating or had a persistent seed bank, implying greater annual variation in population size associated with weather conditions. There seemed no clear way to distinguish between those species which were abundant on the ploughed plots and those which were scarce under all conditions using readily accessible data. 相似文献

- The experiment was conducted in the 2016/17 crop season in a greenhouse at Passo Fundo University, Brazil. We hypothesised that the morphological characteristics and biochemical and anatomical composition of soybean roots and shoots, when competing with weeds during different growth periods, are negatively affected, so current concepts of competition between plants should also consider changes in plant roots.
- The soybean cultivar P 95R51 and horseweed (Conyza bonariensis) were used. The treatments consisted of the presence or absence of weeds during different coexistence periods of soybean with horseweed. The periods were V0–V3, V0–V6, V0–R2, V3–R6, V6–R6 and R2–R6, where V0 was the date of soybean sowing and V3, V6, R2 and R6 were phenological stages of the crop. Two fresh roots were used to examine morphological traits. Four roots were used for quantification of dry matter and secondary metabolites.
- Root length was reduced by 21%, 14% and 20% when competing with a weed in the V0–V3, V0–V6 and R2–R6 coexistence periods, respectively. Total phenol content in the V0–V6 and V0–R2 periods was reduced when plants were in competition with weeds; a similar trend was found for flavonoids in the V0–V6 period.
- Soybean–horseweed competition from crop emergence to the V6 stage, in general, affects shoot and root morphological traits and the biochemical composition of the soybean roots. The presence of horseweed at the V3, V6 and R2 stages does not negatively alter the traits evaluated. Root anatomical composition is not modified during all coexistence periods with horseweed.

We tested the applicability of the recently identified major germination cue from smoke (a butenolide 3-methyl-2Hfuro[2,3-c]pyran-2-one) on 18 weed species from non-fire prone environments. For the study species we compared the relative effectiveness
of alternating temperatures, KNO3, GA3, smoke water and the butenolide on germination percentage, germination rate and seedling mass. We found that while smoke
stimulated germination in a number of species it also had negative impacts on other species. In addition, the butenolide was
effective on the widest range of species in terms of enhancing germination percentage, rate and seedling mass. However, none
of the treatments, including butenolide were effective on all species. Our data demonstrate that butenolide may have wide
applicability as a germination and seedling growth stimulant irrespective of whether the species come from fire-prone habitats. 相似文献

Eastern black nightshade (Solanum ptycanthum; EBN) is a problematic weed partly due to its tolerance or resistance to certain herbicides. We examined the effects of an invert emulsion (IE) on the host range and weed control efficacy of the fungus Colletotrichum coccodes (NRRL strain 15547) for biocontrol of EBN. Greenhouse tests demonstrated that several other solanaceous weeds were also infected and killed, and field tests revealed >90% EBN control and dry weight reduction in plants treated with the fungus-IE formulation. These results demonstrate that this IE formulation can promote the efficacy of this bioherbicidal pathogen. 相似文献

Proteins assayed electrophoretically showed variation at only three of 49 presumed genetic loci in alligators from southwestern Louisiana. Average heterozygosity per individual was 0.021±0.012; proportion of polymorphic loci was 0.06. Data on the history, structure, and ecology of this alligator population are consistent with natural selection as the primary factor accounting for this low genetic variability. However, neither a historic population bottleneck nor some genetic mechanism limiting variability can be dismissed as a possible factor. The study was supported by NSF Grant BMS 73-0125 to H.C.D. 相似文献

The detectability of invasive organisms influences the costs and benefits of alternative control strategies, and the feasibility of eradicating an infestation. Search theory offers a mathematically rigorous framework for defining and measuring detectability taking account of searcher ability, biological factors and the search environment. In this paper, invasive species detectability is incorporated into a population simulation model. The model is applied to a base set of parameter values that represent reasonable values for a hypothetical weed. The analysis shows the effects of detectability and search effort on the duration of an eradication program. For a given level of detectability and search time, the analysis shows that the variables with the greatest influence on the duration of the eradication effort are search speed, kill efficiency, germination rate and seed longevity. Monte Carlo simulations are performed on a set of four weed scenarios, involving different combinations of plant longevity, seed longevity and plant fecundity. Results of these simulations are presented as probability distributions and allow us to calculate how the probability of eradication will be affected by search strategy. 相似文献
