Differential cold hardiness in adults and nymphs of the peach-potato aphid Myzus persicae 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The LT50 (lethal temperature) of first instar and adult stages of the peach-potato aphid Myzus persicae was lowered following long term acclimation at low temperatures.
First instars consistently showed greater cold hardiness than adult stages at each acclimation temperature, with the differential increasing as the temperature was lowered. When maintained at 5°C (the lowest acclimation regime) nymphs and adults had dLT50 8.3°C and 4.7°C respectively lower than those for non-acclimated individuals.
When 10°C acclimated adults were returned to 20°C, the acclimation effect was retained in full for 6 days but complete deacclimation occurred by day 10. In contrast the LT50 of their progeny increased gradually from the first day of adult deacclimation towards the level of the unacclimated control over a period of 10 days.
A change in cold hardiness was observed in first instars according to their position in the birth sequence. The LT50 of first-born nymphs (day 1 of reproduction) from 20°C parents was - 15.9°C rising to - 8.3°C by day 4 and remaining at this level until the end of the reproductive period.
The differential mortality between nymphs and adults observed in the laboratory was supported by the results of a field experiment. Adult aphids kept in clip-cages on a crop of oilseed rape showed greater mortality compared with those introduced as nymphs when the minimum temperature fell below -4°C for the first time in winter. Secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA) is known to play an important role in the mucosal defense against a variety of pathogens. Although the role of IgA antibodies during sexual transmission of HIV is not clear, HIV-specific IgA antibodies have been detected in various mucosal secretions of HIV-infected individuals. Using a monoclonal antibody against human IgA, we established an ELISA system to detect anti-HIV p24 IgA antibodies in sera and saliva. We have analyzed the levels of anti-HIV p24 IgG and IgA antibodies in sera and saliva of 107 and 119 adults, respectively, with HIV infection at different clinical stages, and in the sera of 13 infants born to HIV-infected mothers. The level of anti-HIV p24 IgA antibodies was lower in sera and higher in saliva as compared to that of anti-HIV p24 IgG antibodies. Where the percentage of HIV-specific serum antibody-positive cases decreased with disease progression, that of saliva antibody-positive cases increased in AIDS patients. Among the 13 infants born to HIV-infected mothers, 7 infants were HIV-p24-specific serum IgA positive. These sera were negative for anti-HIV p24 secretory IgA, suggesting that some infants develop their own immune responses against HIV infection. Thus, the detection of HIV-specific IgA antibodies, especially in saliva, could be a simple and reliable test for the diagnosis of HIV infection. 相似文献

Detergents added to the rearing water of the molluscLymnaea induce a sharp mortality of all the animals of each experimental group after a variable delay, depending upon the nature of the detergent and its concentration.No important perturbation of the shell growth is noted with the cationic detergent; conversely a light decrease is observed with the anionic detergents and a very severe effect is induced by a commercial washing mixture.The fecundity is always reduced by the detergents: the number of egg-masses per snail and the number of eggs per mass are diversely changed according to the products.In many cases the egg fertility is decreased and the duration of embryogenesis is increased. To compare between a single-foundress colony and a multiple-foundress colony at the pre-emergence state of a social wasp, R. fasciata, nest distributions and colony terminations were investigated in 8 sites with different environmental conditions. Marking experiments were also conducted in two sites at high wasp density.
- Foundress populations were composed of single-foundress colonies in sites C, D and E, new environments where have recently suited for inhaviting, at low wasp density. In sites like A and B which were used year after year, at high wasp density, coexistence of multiple-and single-foundress colonies was observed.
- From the marking experiment, nests initiated by a single foundress were more distant away from the nest where the original foundress emerged the fall before, compared to multiple-foundress nests which were initiated by multiple foundress.
- Greater percentage of colony termination was observed in single-foundress nests than in multiple-foundress nests, and the colony termination in single-foundress colonies increased with the nest density.
- Ant predation was the key factor causing the variation of the percentage of colony termination.

Obesity causes serious medical complications and impairs quality of life. Moreover, in older persons, obesity can exacerbate the age‐related decline in physical function and lead to frailty. However, appropriate treatment for obesity in older persons is controversial because of the reduction in relative health risks associated with increasing body mass index and the concern that weight loss could have potential harmful effects in the older population. This joint position statement from the American Society for Nutrition and NAASO, The Obesity Society reviews the clinical issues related to obesity in older persons and provides health professionals with appropriate weight‐management guidelines for obese older patients. The current data show that weight‐loss therapy improves physical function, quality of life, and the medical complications associated with obesity in older persons. Therefore, weight‐loss therapy that minimizes muscle and bone losses is recommended for older persons who are obese and who have functional impairments or medical complications that can benefit from weight loss. 相似文献

Dispersion capabilities of new queens were studied in the two haplometrotic paper wasps Polistes riparius and P. snelleni. New queens were marked on the nests in the late summer and located in the next spring. Dispersion distances greatly varied among queens: although a large part of recovered queens nested in close proximity to their natal sites, some did disperse over 100–300 m. This suggests that queens' emigration from and immigration into the censused areas occurred to a substantial extent. Six high school students in Tochigi prefecture, Japan, developed gastroenteritis after eating at a pork cutlet shop. Molecular epidemiologic analyses showed that the causative agent was genotype G1P[8] rotavirus (RV), this being detected in stool samples from both the patients and the asymptomatic food handlers. The detected RV strains were closely related genetically. The only uncooked food that all victims had eaten was raw sliced cabbage. These findings results suggest that uncooked foods contaminated with RV may be sources of infectious gastroenteritis in adolescents. 相似文献
